I think what you got offered was typical unfortunately.  I too have switched around.  I was paid 8 cpl at my previous company and was an employee.  I had 4 accounts and still ran out of work.  I now get paid 9 cpl as a IC, but at least I only have 1 account and 1 backup and can usually stay busy with those.
