Suppose it does control external noise...

On the other hand, how do any of the callers know that questions are being addressed via IMs? Even if you submit a question through IM, if she doesn't choose to acknowlege it, no one knows you sent that question through but you and her.

Also, this strategy attributed to noise reduction is also ideal for getting a group mentality going; you know, how if a few people are reticent to comment, they will normally do so only after someone else has brought up the issue.

So you're right, it's 'noise control,' except I think THEIR idea of noise control is much different than YOUR idea of noise control ;-)
