Can you define "some exceptions?"...

In your response you said it was for radiology in general although there are some exceptions. I've heard from 2 HIM transcriptionists who have been with the company for several years that they were notified that their line rates would be changed to the new hire rates & they were given less than a week's notice on this.

First, you should make this to "some" MTSOs, not all act like
I was once MTSO, but I'm back with a national now. I got tired of the headaches. As far as hiring, my side was the opposite with MTs who claimed to have experience they didn't, wanted lots of work but when there WAS lots of work, balked or even walked, never to be heard from again, or turned in shoddy reports to get it done. Either way, I was left as the cleaner on top of the work I did too. So there are some MTs with poor work ethic as well BUT I also had MTs working with me that were reliable and great, so I don't clump all together. The trouble is, some MTSOs DO (as evidenced by posts below), so you may be a victim of that.

You sound like a good candidate for a job, so don't get discouraged. I don't think it's anything you are doing or not doing at all. Timing is key. It took me a few bad experiences, but I finally found a good MTSO to work for that pays well and treats MTs well. Not too many MTs leave this MTSO though so you're not going to see a ton of ads for the better places all the time. You have to be patient or have lucky timing, but they are out there and you'll find one eventually so don't give up.

As for the work issue, summer months are slow for a LOT. Many doctors have kids and take vacation in summer while their kids are off school (same with Christmas, Easter break, etc.) In fall, work picks up again Could be MTSOs hire more to prepare for that or some MTs might be hired on an as-needed basis. Some just plain overhire. With this work, some weeks you might be searching for work and the next have so much you can't see straight, so I welcome the slow times and save for them since I kinda know when they'll come now. I also work for 2 places, one fulltime and one parttime, so if I run out of work at one, other usually has work. I'm IC though. Even as employee you could maybe take on a parttime or PRN side job to pick up extra when your fulltime one is slow. Works for some and some hate it. I like having the safety net.

Hang in there. I'm sure you'll find something but I know it's easy to get discouraged. It took me several tries with different places before I found the one that worked best for me, so you might go through that too.
Of course there are exceptions. SM
Granted - not every topic flames out. Not every positive post is attacked. Very true. Sometimes reasonable and rational discussion does take place. I'm just saying that OVERALL, the board seems slightly weighted towards the negative. As with ANY public forum, I don't take what I read to be gospel truth.
I think there are exceptions...
My account is a huge university with all departments going to DQS but mine (fortunately) - I assume they said "no thanks" because they have always used their own system and I'm still typing for 'em, even tho all other departments have switched. At least I HOPE they won't be dropped (this is also the biggest money making department in the hospital so I don't think MQ wants to say "Go away"...I sure hope so, anyway. I do NOT want to go to DQS if at all possible, thats for sure!
It's not set up to allow that. You'd have to go into Exceptions and
s
I can believe that as well. Hence my comment about exceptions. Always are I know. nm

Define IC, please
How do companies manage to constantly advertise they are looking for ICs for specific hours and days?  When I was an IC, I told them when I would be working, what days of the week, etc.
Please define
what an MT is/does.
Do you know how they define a line?
I have not worked as an IC, but it doesn't sound too far off if the details are right. Do they pay for spaces? Headers? What software? What report types? Have you heard the dictators yet?

I don't have all the answers, but those who will will probably need more info.
You define yourself as being in business.
My 2 cents - strictly my thoughts:  1) License?   Probably not needed - in my state of Indiana (or maybe just county) when I checked on this years ago they informed me a license was required for retail type business, selling a product, not a service.    May need a DBA (doing business as) registered with your county recorder(?) if you take on a business name.  Requirements vary from state and counties.   That's all it takes.   2) When are you In Business???   As soon as you desire to be -- and believe you are!   3) How many accounts?   One!  That's enough sometimes to get started.   I believe being in business or even freelance is a mindset.  If you think you're in business, you are.  But no one else might see you that way.  Besides, most medical offices I've ever transcribed for (10+ years) I don't think really saw me as being in business.  Early on in my so-called business career as an MT, while waiting to pick up a tape in his waiting room one morning, I overheard the doctor talking to the receptionist, asking her:  is that the typing girl.  That gave me a perspective real fast!   After that, I realized that while I might see myself as in business, most accounts saw the transcription business I offered was simply a necessary evil they had to pay for, and that I charged too much anyway--no matter what I quoted.  It's a strange way to make a living.   They need you but don't really want you.  At least I think that's how the docs see us.   So, if you want to give it a try, simply Declare that you have a small business and go for it.  You define it for yourself.  Best of luck to you.
Define desperate
I think it depends on how desperate you are for the experience.    I worked for a company out of North Carolina at an extraordinarily low line rate, but they were the only company who would hire me with no practical experience whatsoever. I knew I had to suck it up and deal with less than minimum wage for a while and just put my time in. Fortunately I had backup money so my mortgage did not go unpaid during this time frame.   If you are just trying to get anyone to hire you, then you might want to take it at least for a while.  Horrible is better than nothing, sometimes.
With a few rare exceptions, the companies I have worked for
don't share worker names - so how do you know these other people work for Allstate?
They make exceptions - talk to your manager
If you need assistance, e-mail me and I can help you as well.
define strung along - guess I just don't get it
I personally was never treated badly by anyone there, the only surprise being how quickly office closed.
Define affordable? What may be affordable to one person may not be to another. nm
