Have you looked into obtaining private health insurance like through http://www.ehealthinsurance.com. You can get online quotes within a few minutes; the companies that underwrite it are United, Aetna, etc. For me, I could get it anywhere as cheap as $60 a month up to $150. Which is still a lot cheaper than through my employer. What I liked about the idea was you don't have to wait around for open enrollment and you can cancel it any time. I had good luck with it!
