What about deductions?

I also recently started working as an IC, for the first time. Besides setting aside part of my wages, is it true that at tax time I can lessen the tax bill quite a bit by taking a home office deduction, such as utilities, etc.?  Do I pay separately into Social Security? Inquiring minds want to know.......Thanks!

Deductions are still allowed
Even if you are on employee status, you can still take deductions for your at-home office. I didn't think so either until my accountant told me that absolutely, you still can. It isn't as much as if you are totally self employed, but there are still quite a few allowed. The best of both worlds is statutory employee. That means you do not pay both sides of the SS Tax but you still send in quarterlies. This way, you can take all deductions for your home office, etc. Hope this clarifies it a bit better.
Are you sure taking all available deductions?
x
You forgot to do some deductions - sm
like medical benefits, taxes, no pay for vacation or sick time, no rasies, etc.  I got out of this field about a year ago but still visit this board.  It amazes me how the same baloney is complained about for at least the 10 years I was an MT.  Not everyone can type 200 lph no matter how long they've been typing.  You have no idea how BAD it is for your health to sit for long periods of time.  Glad you're happy with the position and I'm happy I'm out of it.  Now I get bennies, vacation pay, don't have to work holidays and/or weekends and make about $16/hr.
Those things MTs pay for are tax deductions. And
dr. to you? DO you think it just magically appears in your PC?  And who do you thing handles the disgruntled facilities, dictation-to-MT break-downs, and all the other irritating details that come with this business.  It is not just work in, work out, cash the check.
Saw JLG hiring SE and IC. SE can take home office deductions, right? (sm)
Any other pros/cons about this or the company in general?
I'm an employee and can take home office deductions. You
have to have a $$ amount equal to a certain percentage of your income to be able to claim expenses if you are not an IC.  I don't claim home office because it only made about a $50 difference in my report and I'd rather not claim it than worry about an audit since my office isn't 100% office use, my internet service isn't 100% work related, etc.   HR Block does my taxes too.
Please excuse typo--I meant deductions
its getting late and I stacked wood all day. LOL!
But as work at home IC, deductions can often lower
x
Oh no. Also check to see if your tax deductions (fed, state, social security) were
nm
yes you can claim all that as SE.
x
Yes, they do. They claim only 15%. nm

Could be, just like you claim to be an MT. nm
xxxxxxx
This claim in your post is exactly why
It is dangerous to both the employee (MT) and the company (MTSO).

Both were burned here by someone who apparently is completely anonymous to either or at least hiding like the loser they are.

Yes and it was not a claim..have proof. Thanks
x
How do I make a claim at the BBB? nm
x
They claim to have been in biz since 1992. nm
,,
They claim they do this out of necessity...
as well as for efficiency because they can't handle all of the required work. I'm curious, though, as to what they pay the Indian MTs. If the pay is extremely low (usually 1 to 2 cpl in India), that says it's mostly for the profit margin. I still have yet to see a company that pays an Indian, Pakistani, or Philippian MT more than that or equivocal to an American MT. It's all about the profit margin.
how much of your utilities have you been able to claim?
My tax advisor told me I could only claim the amount of utilities that equaled my office space. For example, my office space I claim is 20% of my house, so I could only claim 20% of my utilities. Anyone else have this experience?  Anything I can do differently as an IC? I do deduct the total expense of internet and phone since I am required to have these for work...
Yes it is true and if you were there 2 years ago as you claim
as well as the "not so flattering" picture of her that was in the company email newsletter at around the same time.  Nice try though.
BBB - I think it costs $9.50 to make a claim now
Check the BBB internet site.
If told to do it but not claim it, that is PERMISSION, nm

So if you have a medical claim, the insurance - sm
doesn't pay anything until you've forked out the first $2,000? That's appalling!
They claim it is only 15%, but it is more like 60% offshore work.
The offshore swine get preferential treatment over the US transcriptionists. The screen shows there is work to do and suddenly everything is gone but the bad dictators, and I do not mean 10 jobs, I am talking at least 45 jobs at one time off my accounts just disappeared. I thought about changing my name to hari skrishna for a while so I could get some work, but found another job instead.
You said they claim easy dictators..

Are they easy with a significant amount of repetitiveness?  If there isn't...and all they do is talk then as an IC, 7 cents is not gonna pay the rent.  If the doc repeats things over and over...then you have a chance.

I had an ESL once who others wouldn't do.  However, once I figured him out I found that he repeated 90% of the reports so it was great.

It also depends on platform.  If it's in MS Word with an FTP site...great.  If they use something like Emdat but don't have the demos and base information correct then your line count goes even lower.  Shop wisely....

TO THE ABOVE POST - IF YOU CLAIM TO BE SPEAKING TRUTH - SM
THEN GO AHEAD AND MENTION NAMES OF MANAGEMENT THAT LET THESE THINGS GO ON! WHAT DOCTORS AT WHAT HOSPITAL GOT FED UP WITH WHAT ACCOUNT AND ONLY GAVE OVERFLOW!?!?!? YOU ARE SO FULL OF CRAP! I AM A SINGLE PERSON AND I AM NOT A FAVORITE OR A CHERRYPICKER OF THE COMPANY. SO IF YOU HAVE SOME NAMES TO BACK UP YOUR "TRUTH" I SUGGEST YOU SPIT IT OUT. BECAUSE OTHER THAN THAT, YOU ARE FULL OF CRAP!
Can you file a work comp claim
If you are an employee, you can file a worker's compensation claim, and the company has to follow the rules of the state the insurance company would consider jurisdiction.  As a former workers' compensation claim handler, MQ is legally bound to have your claim handled wihtout any issues.  If you have issues you have the right to go to the state workers' compensation board for assistance.
You made the claim by making your headline say
that is a claim and could potential be called slander. Hope you have an attorny on retainer.

you said ... I am not making any claims. ..... You made a specific claim that JLG was dishonest. I'm more inclined to believe you can't live up to the owner's standards.
I just find it amusing when MTs claim to assist others
If it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it.

They claim "it is so much faster than Spheris".
xx
How very interesting that people who claim NOT to be management seem to know all this is going on?
Out of the 196 e-mails they sent last month with account updates, endless pleas for help until they get new people in place, etc., there was not any real company info. I have been there 3 years and am currently looking to leave. They are hands down the rudest group of people I have ever worked with, in or out of this business. I have had MANY e-mails go unanswered, you are not allowed to IM but they send endless messages about all the work to be done while I am TRYING to work, and forget about ever reaching them on the phone should you need to. I work on numerous accounts that switch back and forth all day long. They want you to shut up and type and will contact you when THEY need something. Let me also add they have tons of ESL docs and very bad dictators in general. The only thing good is that the pay is on time.
The same way cars that claim to be "made in America"
Some people just take a shred of truth, and spread it really really thin.  But their lies should be exposed every time someone gets a chance.
Aren't they the ones that claim to be a good Christian
company too?  Sounds too much like TranScam to me.
It's not BS as you claim. They told me they do not hire PT. I have tried 3 times in 3 months.
I cannot work FT as I have a job at a hospital but they will not budge on saying no PT. I have read all your posts as I have been researching companies and it seems like you think you know more about KS than you do. You post something bad about every KS post but you don't give details, so I think you are BS.
I actually thought of that. I even thought of trying to go back to MQ part-time!! (sm)
I just wonder about hours at a second company.  I work days (and some nights) with this company.  I have a set schedule but with the no work situtation I've been on the computer at all hours of the day and night.  Right now I have no work, so I would love to jump on at a company #2 and start working.  Do you have to have set hours at your company #2?  Thanks for the suggestion.
If you are statutory they take out SS tax only. (sm)
In this instance they took everyout out but.
Statutory or IC?
Statutory is different than IC - I haven't seen much in the way of statutory, but I just had a job offer today, GOOD offer, too - from Oracle, and it's IC. I'm leery about going IC all the way, but then again - why not? There are no guarantees anywhere, and my husband says we do much better tax-break wise with IC than employee status.
Statutory or IC
Hey, I just had an offer from them today too.. Maybe we can chat? I didn't get my paperwork yet in email. Did you?
Statutory of IC
Oh I talked to her today and she is sending my paperwork, so if you had not accepted, then you probably wont' get any paperwork.
Which is better, statutory or IC
and why?
everybody is statutory.sm
Good company, sometimes too much work, sometimes not enough, just like everywhere else. Lanier accounts are pretty much like any other account, work is work.
Statutory?
If a company does not take out state income taxes does that mean the Transcriptionist is statutory?
mdi-md statutory
I am looking for the right web address for mdi-md of Maryland that hires statutory.  I only found a web site that comes up as trans-mdi (i think that was the right format) but anyway I just want to make sure of the correct address.  I have a feeling this website is the the correct one.  TIA.
Is it truly IC or statutory?

There is a difference.  Employers pay the SS tax on statutory employees; IC's are responsible for all the taxes.

I applied with 3 MTSOs not too long ago (about 4 months).  Two of them were statutory status and the other was employee status.  The 2 SE's offered me 9.5 and 9 cpl to start.  The ES offered me 8 cpl with benefits.

There are many things to consider besides just a starting cpl when choosing an MTSO.  For me, flexibility and reliability of work flow was more important than a little more per line.  I ended up with the MTSO that paid 9 cpl because I don't need the benefits.

I have seen some IC's on these boards say they make 11 cpl and up.  I think a lot of those IC's are truly IC's, contracted by local hospitals, etc.  I'm sure there are SE's that make that as well, I just don't know too many that start out at more than 10 cpl these days.

Statutory ?

What is statutary exactly?  They just take out FICA/Medicare, not federal or state and you still do a schedule C? I have to find another job as where I work now we just lost a big account with no notice.  Last day is tomorrow.

Statutory
The IRS website has good information about statutory versus IC.
Statutory
Nor Cal MT, we are statutory employees, not IC, and I think you spend too much time on this board putting out info that is not accurate.
Am I statutory or employee

I just recently started working for MQ.  Everyone is getting me confused.  First, I am emailed about a rental fee.  I called and told them I was an employee.  I got my first paycheck and they only took out state and federal taxes.  So, I am still as confused as they are.  I left 3 messages for payroll and 3 emails.  No answer as of yet.  Are they supposed to take out all taxes if I am a full time employee?  They only took out state and federal. Does this make a statutory?

Thanks for any infor.

I am a statutory employee and they take out sm
state, federal and Social Security. I didn't want to be botherered with the taxes and it was an option they could or I and I chose MQ to take the taxes.
statutory employees

I have been with MQ since 1983 when they were still Transcriptions Limited (the good old days).  I don't know what they are doing and I wish I knew.  I am part-time 5000 lines a pay period but it only takes me two hours to do 500 lines so that works fine with me.  I am on disability and only work enough to supplement by SS.  Plus I cannot sit more than two hours at a time so it works out fine.  If they come up with this 4 hour minimum then I am in a heap of trouble.

I had someone from corporate call today to ask if I had gotten that letter about the new program.  At the time I told him no, but I think I did I just can't find it.  I have just gotten out of the hospital after a 12 day stay and can't even get my mind together to figure it out.

I don't like the sound of things but we will know in October according to this guy who called.

statutory employees

I was told today that we would know in October.
