Statutory Employee Status
Please, can someone tell me if there are transcription companies that offer remote MTs employee status w/medical benefits.  Is there such a thing as a Statutory Employee and what does this entitle us to?
do any companies still have statutory status?
and do they provide the computer or do you use your own?
Best company there is for statutory status!

I've been there about 3 months and I love it.  Bayscribe was very easy to learn.  The people are fantastic.

MDI-Maryland sounds right for what you are looking for; however, it is SE status. nm

There are no bennies. They offer IC and statutory status.
Pay is comparable to most of the services. If you want employee status, they do not offer it. They are a good company though.
NEITHER STATUTORY NOR EMPLOYEE STATUS FAIR..SM

I said it before, when MTs were first forced to go the employee route..it's all about control...same for statutory.  They have no right to dictate shifts/hours unless you're paid for your time by the hour.  In either, you only get what you produce, per production. You might think you're ahead with employee status because of benefits.  But what happens when you can't make your line count, even through no fault of your own?  The only square deal is IC status... you get what you pay for..no more, no less.  They don't pay for your time.. so they can't dictate a schedule.  What other industry would require a certain amount of your time and not pay for your time?  It would be different if they were to guarantee a certain wage per hour/day, etc... but they can't even guarantee there will even be any work.

Can anyone tell me if MDI (out of Maryland-IC status)supplies computer?
On their ad they don't state anything about the computer specifics.  Do you rent it?  Thanks for any info. I am assuming as an IC you would use your own computer but it is odd that there is no info about what you need???
Do they offer both statutory employee and independent contractor status? Thank you! NM

P.S. ''If we try employee status and decide it’s not for us, can we return to statutory employ

Agree..with IC status, equip. is your responsibility; employee status - you should SM
not have to pay out-of-pocket for use of their equipment. I would never work employee status for a company who required me to purchase or lease their equipment. The only thing I would find acceptable is to have a small security deposit taken out of paycheck when starting with a company. This will protect the company from those few who might abuse the equipment.
Anyone know of Escription companies that offer IC status. I do not want employee status but would
like to stick with the Escription platform at all possible.
Employee status w/benefits vs IC status??? Dilemna enclosed

I am caught between a rock and a hard place and figure this is the place to get the best advice from those in the know.  I have been an IC for the past 5 years and love the flexibility but was interested in a job with benefits.  I started a new job about a month ago with good pay (2 lph more than I was making) and benefits......very happy with company but as an employee, obviously have a schedule.  I am working both jobs currently and starting to burn out.  On the new job, I am struggling to get the 1200 lines per day required but on my old.... I can easily get 150-400 lph depending on the dictator but again, it is IC and less lph than the new job.  Obviously, the platform is different and not paid for template headers/footers wheras the old one, I am paid for those.  Now to my question.  Is it just me?  Is it because I really enjoyed the freedom of ic status and therfore seem to be struggling?   Anyone else experienced this before?  Tempted to go back told job and lose benefits/more pay because in the end, maybe it works out be the same pay because of amount of time I spend getting the job done?   Not sure if this makes sense but hoping you can all offer some advice!!  TIA

If you are statutory they take out SS tax only. (sm)
In this instance they took everyout out but.
Statutory or IC?
Statutory is different than IC - I haven't seen much in the way of statutory, but I just had a job offer today, GOOD offer, too - from Oracle, and it's IC. I'm leery about going IC all the way, but then again - why not? There are no guarantees anywhere, and my husband says we do much better tax-break wise with IC than employee status.
Statutory or IC
Hey, I just had an offer from them today too.. Maybe we can chat? I didn't get my paperwork yet in email. Did you?
Statutory of IC
Oh I talked to her today and she is sending my paperwork, so if you had not accepted, then you probably wont' get any paperwork.
Which is better, statutory or IC
and why?
everybody is statutory.sm
Good company, sometimes too much work, sometimes not enough, just like everywhere else. Lanier accounts are pretty much like any other account, work is work.
Statutory?
If a company does not take out state income taxes does that mean the Transcriptionist is statutory?
mdi-md statutory
I am looking for the right web address for mdi-md of Maryland that hires statutory.  I only found a web site that comes up as trans-mdi (i think that was the right format) but anyway I just want to make sure of the correct address.  I have a feeling this website is the the correct one.  TIA.
Is it truly IC or statutory?

There is a difference.  Employers pay the SS tax on statutory employees; IC's are responsible for all the taxes.

I applied with 3 MTSOs not too long ago (about 4 months).  Two of them were statutory status and the other was employee status.  The 2 SE's offered me 9.5 and 9 cpl to start.  The ES offered me 8 cpl with benefits.

There are many things to consider besides just a starting cpl when choosing an MTSO.  For me, flexibility and reliability of work flow was more important than a little more per line.  I ended up with the MTSO that paid 9 cpl because I don't need the benefits.

I have seen some IC's on these boards say they make 11 cpl and up.  I think a lot of those IC's are truly IC's, contracted by local hospitals, etc.  I'm sure there are SE's that make that as well, I just don't know too many that start out at more than 10 cpl these days.

Statutory ?

What is statutary exactly?  They just take out FICA/Medicare, not federal or state and you still do a schedule C? I have to find another job as where I work now we just lost a big account with no notice.  Last day is tomorrow.

Statutory
The IRS website has good information about statutory versus IC.
Statutory
Nor Cal MT, we are statutory employees, not IC, and I think you spend too much time on this board putting out info that is not accurate.
Am I statutory or employee

I just recently started working for MQ.  Everyone is getting me confused.  First, I am emailed about a rental fee.  I called and told them I was an employee.  I got my first paycheck and they only took out state and federal taxes.  So, I am still as confused as they are.  I left 3 messages for payroll and 3 emails.  No answer as of yet.  Are they supposed to take out all taxes if I am a full time employee?  They only took out state and federal. Does this make a statutory?

Thanks for any infor.

I am a statutory employee and they take out sm
state, federal and Social Security. I didn't want to be botherered with the taxes and it was an option they could or I and I chose MQ to take the taxes.
statutory employees

I have been with MQ since 1983 when they were still Transcriptions Limited (the good old days).  I don't know what they are doing and I wish I knew.  I am part-time 5000 lines a pay period but it only takes me two hours to do 500 lines so that works fine with me.  I am on disability and only work enough to supplement by SS.  Plus I cannot sit more than two hours at a time so it works out fine.  If they come up with this 4 hour minimum then I am in a heap of trouble.

I had someone from corporate call today to ask if I had gotten that letter about the new program.  At the time I told him no, but I think I did I just can't find it.  I have just gotten out of the hospital after a 12 day stay and can't even get my mind together to figure it out.

I don't like the sound of things but we will know in October according to this guy who called.

statutory employees

I was told today that we would know in October.

No, everybody there are statutory employees (SE) - nm

former statutory employees can....sm

As I know it, if you were an SE and taxes were taken out, you can file for unemployment.....

Statutory employee
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the companies who hire statutory employees? I would like the flexibility of an IC, but I would like the company to pay half the taxes for me. If you know how I could find out which companies work this way, please let me know! Thanks!!!

Statutory employee
By definition an independent contractor (IC) should not be told that he/she will work 8 hours or 2 hours straight on a schedule. You give them the schedule you prefer to work and they accept that or reject it. The operative word here is independent. Far too many companies try to not do the tax thing and still want control of the IC. The IRS does not like that!
you are an SE, statutory employee.

Never having been statutory, I have no idea. Best

They hire statutory. nm

Question on IC and statutory..
When it comes to taxes, is an IC and statutory the same as far as them not withholding any taxes meaning is there a tax that a statutory position might withhold but not IC?  Thank you very much.
Statutory employees.

MDI-Maryland.
Do they supply you with equipment or do you have to use your own.  TIA.
MDI-Maryland
MDI-MD is an excellent company...everything from the platform to the pay to the responsiveness of the staff.  The accounts are not for beginning MTs, but for anyone with over 5 years experience in most hospital work types the company is a real jewel.  Pay is every other Friday.  Status is SE, so that self-employment taxes are paid by company.  Great flexibility.
MDI-Maryland
I work for MDI and I love my accounts. I have had very few ESL. You are an independent contractor, that is all they hire. I started out at 9.5 cpl. The work on my account is easy. Teaching hospitals are not that different from others no matter what one may think. the account specifics are easy because they are the same on every account they have and the transcription is strictly verbatim. While, I am not that fond of verbatim, because of the docs have bad English skills, it's okay because then you know exactly what the QA is looking for. I did not test for the job. They do not perform audits as most nationals do. You set your own schedule, commit to your own amount of lines per day. It's the best company I have worked for and the people are great. The accounts are from Baltimore... I was leary of ESLs, but I have just about 4 or 5 of them and they are not that bad.
MDI-Maryland
MDI is a good company. however they do not pay extra for working nights, weekends, or holidays and you are expected to work 2 weekend days a month and 2 holidays.
Maryland
Do any hospitals in Rockville area hire local transcriptionists?  TIA
MDI-MARYLAND
I have never received anything positive from an MDI QA person. I asked for some positive feedback and also asked that it would be nice if they had to say something positive. Their response We don't have time for that All it takes is 2 words Nice job or Good job. How hard is that? They spent a lot time telling the negative, very little time telling the positive.
MDI Maryland
Heavy on ESLs but good cpl. Good supervisers and QA is generally good, unless you get on their list, then they're bears. Very, very, very flexible and accommodating. Nice folks.
MDI-Maryland
I've read the forums but cannot seem to find positives or negatives on MDI-Maryland.  Seems they are too good to be true.  Any comments would be very appreciated.
MDI-Maryland
I saw at the bottom of the page a post by Rhonda concerning MDI and how happy she is there. There are two MDIs, one in Florida and one in Maryland. I work for MDI-Maryland and I LOVE it!! The people are great, the DQA person I had was so wonderful--not harsh, not insultive, not punitive, just very, very helpful! I have been a MT for over 30 years and have worked for a lot of different places, but MDI is home from now on for me. I have never worked for a MT company who puts their employees first like this company does. They also pay very well and all MTs are SE status, which gives me all the flexibility I need. If you want a good MT home, go to MDI-Maryland.
MDI-Maryland does. nm
