No one can get away with anything

if you are proactive. I have ANY contract, be it for residence or office space or for MT services reviewed by legal counsel before I sign it. Can't afford it, you say? I say you cannot afford not do so. Many law schools and bar associations have free nights or pay next to nothing nights where law students will help you (at least in California). Remember, no one can abuse you without your consent. At the very least, carefully review the contact and ask them specifically about anything that is unclear to you and have them put their answers and guarantees in writing before you sign on to work for them. You asked if there were legal ramifications. Why, yes, there are, but most MTs are too passive to stand up for themselves. If any company is breaching the contract, call them on it. You have more power than you think. Good luck!
