Mine lost 40% because I had most of it invested in stock funds. This has been my long term strategy for years and the fact is the stock market goes up and the stock market goes down. If you're not right near retirement age, it is generally recommended that you keep a larger portion in stocks and pare down as you get closer to retirement. I've made a lot of money in the stock market, and now I've lost some. No big deal, really. Sure I'd like to never lose, but that's not reality. You have to have a reasonable plan and then stick to it, and over time you'll be fine. At least I know what I'm doing and understand how my 401 K works. Everybody should if they're going to put money in a 401K. There's no excuse for ignorance.
