    I apologize for stirring up a hornet's nest however, I see soo many people complaining on here about the fact that they only want to work certain hours, they don't want to work weekends, and so on that it angers me. Yes, I work weekends, but that is because of the fact that my s/o works on the weekends, so generally I take a day off during the week, that way, I can run my errands. I am an employee for a company, however, I really don't have set hours, nor do I work a straight 8 hour day -- I generally work more, because like all of us, I have bills to pay as well and know approximately what I have to make to be able to have a roof over my head and food on the table. I am my sole support and live in an area with a relatively high cost of living as well. I was making great money up until a couple of years ago, but things happened and I have had to take a job at a lower rate of pay, but at least it is a job. The key here is being flexible in your hours. If there is no work available, then maybe there will be in a few hours and you have to explain to friends and family that this is how it works. Luckily for me, I found a great fit with a company, its only one account, one hospital and I have never run out of work.
    In my original post about this, I wanted to say sm

    edict rather than law, but figured I'd get jumped on using that word.  One of the late-night talk-show hosts referred to it as a law when one of the guests was baiting him to say, Merry Christmas. 


    The point is, you knew exactly what I meant in the first place.  Oh well.  Glad I gave No Name a LOL!  Laughing is healthy.

    Folks I'm sorry someone considers my post a flame.  That was not my intention, but then again I have never been treated worse by an employer in my whole professional life.  That's why I'm looking forward to working for a company without local roots and the small town, small-minded mindset it brings.

    I see certain people on this board, who post under the same names and I can take a 1 hour break, a 2 hour break or a 3 hour break and they seem to be whining and complaining about life  -- yet they can get new puppies, new kitties, new other animals but BOTTOM line  -- oh gee no work  guess what people  -- I have to swtich back and forth between 2 accounts on my MAIN account and 2 accounts on my secondary  -- I literally work till I dropand thank heavens, I am in a relationship where my significant other understands  -- yes, we ALL have to deal with being on hold with India, but that is where you take a day, to pay the bills, vent with customer service reps, etc and move forward  -- and like I told my other half  -- bill dosent get  paid its YOUR responsibility  - a relationship, whether it be marriage or othewise takes 2 people.


    And as I mentioned before, TAKE THE time to learn online resources as well  -- for example, if you hear Kem-7 THINK Chemistry-7  -- learn punctuation, grammar and most of all spelling and --sorry been working from 7 am to 11 pm -- with VERY few breaks  -- might help in the long run

    I got so absorbed in reading the GREAT posts below.  I am now so proud to say that I have just done what you suggested, and am now joyfully employed with one of the three companies you listed - go US MTs! I left the company-who-shall-not-be named due to these issues, and feel I have at least tried to do something.  Its a good feeling, too, for a change.

    to have these horrid dictators for the test. Back to the question......YES IT IS. That is probably a sample of what this company does. You took the test, you didn't like it because the dictation was bad, so move on! Yes this profession has come down to lines and cpl etc etc and its a darn shame. If you don't want the crap don't work for a company that has crap dictators. I don't know where you are going to find that though. All companies have accounts with bad dictators. you are bound to get some of them. Doing them all day long, no I wouldn't want to either. That is why they tested this way because that is probably the account. Believe it or not, there are folks who have an ability to decipher these dictators (I don't want it either). It has changed old MTs like me who have been in this business for 35 years.

    Bad dictators have always been part of the profession, its a part of medicine! You don't have to do it, you tested, you didn't like it...GREAT move on

    She then came back and posted a very rude post in which we responded rudely back. Maybe if she had kindly come back and asked why no one responded to her post she would have gotten nicer answers. The fact is, I did read the initial post and did not respond to it as it would have taken way too long to go into detail everything that being an IC entails. If she had been more specific with what she wanted to know, I more than likely would have responded to the original post.

    There was no question as to whether someone had to work it or not. The question was to why there should be incentive pay to go along with working those hours.

    Your rant, while posted in this thread, actually does nothing to address it, but rather seems to have provided you a place to vent....why so blue, Boo? Did you have to work the weekend?
    Follow up to my original post
    I worked for a company where it was a combination of VR and straight typing -- I never knew what the next report was going to bring and at the same time, started working for a company that does straight transcription. I am not adverse to VR, if that is all that is done; however, these companies have started the thing of paying one rate for straight typing and another for VR -- that's where it is very frustrating as I am sure it is to many of you. I know the goals that I have to set for myself in order to keep a roof over my head, pay my utilities and keep food on the table and if it means putting 12-15 hours a day in, then I do it, knowing what my priorities are. For those of you that are fortunate enough to have a spouse who also brings in an income, that is all well and good, but many of us are single and have to do what we can to survive. My rent alone is close to $800 a month, then I have cable and electric on top of it to pay, and right now, I have very little food in the fridge but I am managing to get by.

    I just completed an interview process with JLG. The owner presents herself as an MT who understands our situations. But they are very dishonest. Do not trust them. They are liars. I just wish I could find some honesty in this business. I have been in it for 20 years. It used to be a professional career with integrity, but not anymore. The disadvantage of working over the internet is that companies do not see you as a person, but as a computer, or a typist. They don't have to look into our eyes when they lie. They just really don't care. Thanks for listening.

    $48 for the medical, $10 for the dental, and I don't know how much for the vision because I didn't opt in for it this year. That's per paycheck, do double that to get the monthly fee. I did opt for the higher-deductible medical; the lower-deductible premium share was about twice as much.
    Goodness...read the original post again..you are way off the mark.

    Sounds like you have the problem.....and are very willing to attack, gut and spit out.

    Those of us with some compassion understood exactly what you were trying to find out, Alice. You don't need to justify or explain that post for the benefit of that black cloud hovering around the boards posting negative responses to everything she reads. Your post was fine, and your concern was understandable.

    Ignore this person, who obviously just enjoys p*ssing on everyone's parade because she feels someone p*ssed on hers.

    If you find the original post so offensive, why did you respond at all?

    Why don't you get a clue?  A good number of people enjoyed this.  If you dislike it, you can just move on to some rosy-happy-fun filled post and leave the rest of us to chuckle without being harassed.

    Testing with New England Medical Transcription - follow up to original post
    I sent an email to the recruiter when I was unable to access the files and received one back from her this morning (Monday) informing me that apparently someone who was also testing had inadvertently deleted the files off the FTP site.
    I had posted that question right up under the original poster and prior to her post being answeredsm

    Looks are deceiving and I AM paying attention.


    I think it is clear that the intent was not to
    warn other MTs, but to warn the non-paying MTSO of the upcoming wrath about to be unleashed.  Why not just send her an e-mail?  I dunno.

    Wow, I never imagined this response. I truly was posting only with an intent to help. So many MDI MTs complained on and on about not having work. I refuse to play a victim but certainly do NOT see myself as vulture because I take responsibility for myself. There are 30 or more accounts at MDI. Long gone are days of having 1 to 3 accounts. There are no personal accounts, again, those are long gone. I do think that fact stinks, and I agree with a poster below that it has encouraged us to turn on each other. I never dreamed I would be labeled a poacher, a bottom feeder, or a vulture - but I shouldn't be surprised, as this forum has nasty floating karma that always crops up somehow. Most companies have valued MTs being cross trained, NOT to pit us against each other but to get good coverage for accounts. I have always believed cross training was a good plan and love learning new accounts.

    I don't have the luxury of sitting back and being happy with 12 jobs to do at my leisure, as I am a breadwinner and my full time paycheck is required like most of us. I can see all of your points, but it's kind of like many debates occurring here - how many of us have the luxury to stand up on principle - against offshoring, against VR, or now, what, against being cross trained? So that we can honor some kind of now antiquated view that every MT gets to have one personal account that no one else should be able to work on? I can't imagine sitting back and saying, no way am I going to cross train, if I run out of work, so be it. Who can do this?! Someone who does not need their full time paycheck maybe. If it's going to be implied the cross training is now somehow unprincipled, then remember if you point the finger you got 3 fingers pointing back at you. I don't think any of us have a right to point at EACH OTHER for trying to make a living when we most of us are still here, complaining about no work/offshoring/VR, we haven't quit, we haven't stood up for our principles and banded together, no, we are picking at an MT like me. Go figure.

    If the company was a small one and had a few accounts, well, that would be how it was. If there was no other work to back up, then I would HAVE to find a part time job somewhere else. Don't worry, I won't come take your 12 jobs out from under you. For goodness sake.

    Wow. I'm actually flabbergasted. I guess no matter how you look at it, everyone has the feeling that someone is screwing someone over. If I sit with here no work, I get to complain (over and over and OVER on this board) that it is MDI sending my work to India or to Transcend or overstaffing, or, now, is it actually because your fellow MTs DARE to cross train, increase their chances of actually having work???... and watch my bills pile up? That seems pretty short sighted to me and is not the route I choose as many on this board seem to have chosen. But, if I take control of the situation and eagerly learn new accounts that seems to be appreciated by the company and helps pay my bills, well, I'm a poacher, taking my sisters work, a vulture just waiting to snag YOUR personal jobs. Wow. As I said, when my account is slow, I have enough accounts that I only go to the ones that are busy. There ARE MDI accounts that are busy and will absolutely absorb other smartly cross trained MTs to get in some work - you just have not found them yet. Nobody can win here on this board.     I'm not the original OP, but thanks for this tip ...
    I've done searches on companies in the past also and couldn't find recent feedback on them. In fact, the last time that I did a search on Precyse (a few weeks ago), like the OP the most recent posts were from 2006. With the tip that you gave this gave me much better and more recent hits.

    It's a good company.  With all the negative posts on this board about platforms not working, people not being paid on time (or at ALL), I can attest to the fact that TC is a good company, with none of those problems.  In the 4 years I've worked there, my pay hasn't been late even once (has even been early a couple times through the direct deposit system).  Their training and QA are very good.  The owner is dedicated to always improving the company and is very loyal to her employees.

    Actually, that was the question to begin with. The OP stated that the recruiter said she would call for an interview and then did not. Then stated she would call during the weeked and failed to do so again. So, that was the original beef.

    back to MTing from QA? I absolutely hate QA - I HATE IT. I feel like I am just a garbage collector of sorts. I miss transcribing so much. That was my gift. But everytime I mention going back to MTing, my acquaintances tell me I'll hate it and am moving backward. In a way, its easier physically, but I ACHE all the time as well. I never ever noticed that transcribing. I flitted in and out and made great $$. Now I just sit here for hour upon hour and its killing me, physically and spiritually! I would so appreciate any encouraging words from someone who truly understands!

    Even if the original poster
    does not feel that she owes the company the benefit of a two week notice, do you think it is fair to the rest of the MTs that work there that we will have to pick up her slack when she all of a sudden doesn't show up? Usually when someone is rude enough to quit without notice, it's not their bosses they are hurting, but their fellow coworkers.
    VR can be really screwy sometimes but not like the original here
    If VR were like that, you could retype the entire thing before trying to correct all that mess. I like what I make and I do not think leaving home and going into the work field now most are not going to make what they could with VR with most. Even Walmart has been having layoffs.

    I must say I am very surprised by your post, and have to say Thank you !
    If you have always had work at a good rate you are indeed very lucky, and I am glad for you. It just is not the case with everyone, and especially those just starting out and in a very poor economic situation. A few kind words and a little encouragement from others is sometimes all a person needs to pick up and keep trying.
    As I said in a previous post, I KNOW I have much to learn, but I also know I have come a very long way and work hard to improve each day.
    Questions from a newbie may very well seem silly to someone who has many years of experience, but that doesn't mean you cannot answer in a kind and encouraging manner, you know?
    This should be a place where we all can come for info., support, encouragement :)
