With the advent of EMRs that allow you to fill in the blanks for exams, clinic is on its way out...to some extent. It is not as easy to find jobs in clinic work as it was.

Acute care is another matter. You have a couple of regional companies who have shut down their VR departments and let all their MEs (medical editors) go. The company I work for ramped up the use of VR over the spring from about 30% on many accounts to 90% on many accounts...then back down to around 50% of the work on the same accounts. The reason is that MEs DO NOT do a very good job, they edit in every way imaginable other than how they are supposed to do it. You are to listen WORD FOR WORD and edit the text in front of you. The programs are not at the point with accuracy where they need to be. Unless we go to faster computer processors and we have pretty well maxed out the current computer chip technology, and unless or until we can write programs that learn better as they go along, the quality of VR is not going to get much better than it is currently. I don't care what the VR software companies say.

The need for VR is something we have created ourselves, as MTs. There is more and more need for our services every year. The problem is that there are relatively few of us who have the necessary skill sets, who will actually show up to work when we said we would be there and get our minimum lines or better. Most of the platforms out there are NOT conducive to higher levels of production, no matter what recruiters say about them. There are just not enough of us to go around. What else can be done? This business takes years to learn properly and to get to where you make a living with it.

I do QA and I MT. The work I QA from so-called trained graduates of programs is horrendous. Even MTs who seem to have experience are often not much better. They don't care about the quality of their work, only the lines they produce. They either don't know or don't care about their accuracy.

A QA person can help teach an MT...if they even know what they are doing...if they have the time and moreover, if the MT is willing to learn. I am the one who recommends that someone be released from QA and I have input into firing MTs who don't make the grade. It is my call as to whether an MT is willing to learn or if they should be let go. We have a small staff and in the last 6 months, I have recommended that one MT be retained and worked with (it turned out very well) and suggested 4 other MTs for being let go and they all were, because not one of them would take constructive criticism. I have about the driest feedback style I have ever seen because I don't want anyone to feel personally attacked, but they still would not listen.

My biggest gripe about MT training right now, since I have your ear, is that no one is trained to use an expander! If you want to see less VR you have to see bigger production numbers with traditional MTs. An Expander is the only way to do that. It is critical to making a decent income sooner, critical to accuracy, critical to job satisfaction and therefore critical to this industry. The best way would be to teach by system (body system and specialty) and include expansions for that system while you are at it.
Thanks! I'll give that a shot....nm

Please, give ME a break! Just do your job and you'll be fine!
Why, if you were doing what was required of you, would Transcend single you out to treat unfairly and why would you be afraid to post publically if you were not stirring up trouble?  This what the rest of us wanna know!
GIVE ME THE NAME OF A BETTER PLACE AND I'LL APPLY!
PLEASE, PLEASE, I'M BEGGING!
which one? give a short description and I'll let you know if Im one of many

I'll give you an honest answer
I've had many, many years experience in all specialties and doing all work types, as well as radiology, pathology and autopsies.  When I went to work for TT in 2003 the best the recruiter could give me was 8.5 cpl despite the fact that she knew me and knew my work.  When I retired I had the occasion to be talking to someone I  had worked for some 15 years ago.  He also knew my work and my production.  He offered me 10.5 cpl which he said was the top out pay for their MTs.  He said the usual starting pay was  8.5 for experienced MTs.  I didn't take the job because I wanted to stay retired.   When I left MQ I was making 11.5 cpl plus bonuses.  It had become unbearable when the MT supervisor quit and  her replacement was a control freak.   I don't know the person who said they had been offered 9 or 10 cpl but I think if he/she was offered that amount, there were other factors in play so don't feel bad.  I should think that while CNAs do hard work for low pay, you would be better off.  MT was good to me but it is not a career I would choose these days.

Okay..I'll give ya that one. I came from the MDI side as it merged with Transcend so...
I was offered more than 4 cpl per line on editing and I'm not sure why if everyone else prior had been given 3 cpl. There is no way I would do editing for 3 cpl and trust me..coming from MDI into Transcend was not happy days for us. The biggest problem that I did have was when I found out our work was getting sent to India. Nothing is worse than being told we share work with our overseas partners and have too many days of no work. I have no doubt where it was going. So, never having come from the Transcend side, where you came from, I'm only going to relay my experience and apologize if that is what actually happened there. Yikes..I rely heavily on the MTs and supervisors who came from MDI because I know they watch our backs.
Give it time, they'll get to you. The grand plan is

my shoulder, it's a block(head).  The games they play, the excuses/reasons are old, worn out, and it's aggravating to sit there staring at that NJA cyclops when others are getting the work.  Dog-eat-dog is not conducive to a good work environment.  We didn't create the situation but we bear the brunt.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot! Hope they are hiring PT. nm
..
They don't give a hoot - they'll take the poor quality for less money.
It is clear nobody is held responsible for poor quality medical transcription - do you often hear of lawsuits for errors on dictated reports? How about JCAHO failing a facility for errors on reports? Rare. And as an auditor I have seen what gets through. Either nobody checks or nobody cares. Part of the problem with MT rates. Very unfortunate.
I'm glad you're going to give it a try. I think you'll like it. I can't imaging giving

only 3 days, especially since we did have the 4th slowdown.  They will work with you to get you a secondary account if your primary is not enough.  Good luck to you.

Take a moment to think...
I am grateful to those people who are willing to send out letters and try to bring some attention to our concerns.  But to all those writers here whose vitriol is just dripping off the page, please take a moment to think about the people to whom these letters are being sent, particularly reporters.  Everyone has access to this site, everyone can see all these horrible comments.  How does this help our cause, or each other?
What a wonderful moment.
Those don't come around that often. We all know that "no work" isn't always a good thing, but she got a fabulous morning out of it. Let her enjoy it, and let's hope we get one like that soon!
Using our heads for a moment.
I know and quite admire one of the principals with this company although I do not work there. He is a gentleman, treats all with respect, has an amazing work ethic and has been very successful in this business over the accumulating years that I have known him. I have always trusted his advice and while I do not work for him now, perhaps some day I might. If/because a company may have had problems in the past is no reason to constantly bash them. It may be that they have turned it around and pulled it together. New people, new ideas, lots of new work, all things that can bring you to a place where your opportunities can be good ones. I value other people's opinions but there comes a point too where you have to take a leap of faith and find out for yourself. One MT's mistake is another's treasure. I think that the purpose of the board should be to help people make decisions based on useful information. This MT highway has two lanes, you know, and you often get back the effort you put out in any situation.
I can't walk at the moment but

I'm definitely gearing up.  What burns me the most is that D says she's for the MTs, but where has she been these last few months when MTs have been starving for work?  Was she giving it to Transcend then?  How long have we been going without work because she was giving it to them?  And all along, she's been playing the supportive and caring act.  I think she quit caring back in April or May when we got that first shocking State of the Union about VR, cutting pay, etc.  It must have been in the works then.

What a complete disappointment.  I came to this company because of their loyalty to the MTs and now this.  Back to the pavement.

OSi may have problems at the moment but pay is ALWAYS on time...nm

You even know when your fellow MT's call in at the last moment !

Wow, are you ever psychic!  You are either mgmt or a **wannabe**.

If not mgmt, these are your coworkers that YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, unless you know them as your personal friends, and thank God I do not know you, but on the other hand DO YOU KNOW ME!

I really think it's only full-time at the moment
I have always been full-time, so I may be wrong, but I did hear that they are starting to phase out hiring part-timers, but again, I could be wrong there. That's just what I heard a while back.
Come on Kanye, you stole her evil moment. nm

Yes, but their internet accounts at the moment are high volume ESLs nm

If you'll read through past posts you'll find lots of
recent info.  Why do you need menitoring if you already work as an MT.  Unless you do clinic work most companies will require you to work at least one weekend day, at least initially.
That would depend on what you need.
If you need consistent work, Transcend isn't for you.   Most companies have dry spells now and then, but Transcend runs out A LOT.   If you're a high producer, Transcend isn't for you because within the next 2 years the majority of their work will be editing VR.  A moderate to high producer makes less money editing VR than transcribing.  If you prefer to stay on the same account, Transcend isn't for you.  You might be hired on an oncology account, but chances are you won't be working on that account in 4 months because the majority of the people there have at least 4 or 5 accounts before the end of their first year.
IMO, that would depend a lot on what your needs are.
nm
Must depend on the
then...I work for them and do not have even 1 ESL...Love the company!
It would depend
I am a new MT. If I do not have samples or adequate feedback on a specific doc, I normally blank if I am not 100% certain of the word. That being said, I make every effort to write notes and hi-light anything that is mumbled through. It takes me anywhere from 3-5 jobs with that doc to become use to their voice and style of dictation. I feel for you though, it has got to be tough correcting the same thing over and over again.

It will depend on what is available.
There aren't set shifts necessarily. When I was hired, there were only evening shifts available, but I got to choose my start time. I was required to work 1 weekend day. I know others who had a wide variety of shifts offered to them including 12-hour windows. Just depends on what they need filled at the time.
Because it would depend on the

I think it would depend
on your employment status.  Are you an intern?  Were you hired as an experienced MT?  Generally speaking when a seasoned MT is hired there is an understanding, as with any job,  that there is a probationary period.  My experience with multiple, multiple employers has been that for a few days, often a few hours, one sends everything through Q.A.  Assuming one knows their stuff and has a grasp of the account specs they move off full Q.A.
Would depend on the job.
No amount of money is worth it if I am doing a job I dislike. Also, I am making over $40,000 a year doing MT, so I would need to earn at least that if I was to switch jobs. Would not switch if it meant dropping back down to $30K as I coudln't afford to live off that in my current situation. So the pay would have to be in the higher range of that scale to make it worth a switch.
They depend on complacency. sm
It's working so far.
That will depend on your company, of course. nm
nm
I honestly don't know...It may depend on (sm)
what work you are applying for, because I see on this board here they have several different positions.  I've been practically begging for M-F work for years now, as the stuff I do (hospital, acute care) has always required me to work at least one weekend day.  I always work holidays though, but that is my choice because I can't pass up the chance to earn the extra cash, so I've never asked about those.  Again, I think it all depends on what type of work you do there.
I think it would depend on the account...
I've heard they have lots of accounts on the Lanier system, which requires the unlimited long distance, but I have never asked. Not sure on the satellite part.
That must depend on the account
I have made more with them than any other company and I have tried a lot of other companies.
I think that would depend if you're
employee status or IC/SE status.  The IC/SE status would probably be able to work as much as you want, but the employee status has to watch overtime.
It does depend on where you live.
In fact, I didn't realize about the city license until on of the city investigators came out to investigate my neighbor and her business.
It may depend on your account
I was told when I was hired a few months back that I needed to work either Sun-Thu or Tue-Sat, thereby working 1 weekend day every week.  But that could be dependent upon the account you are assigned.
That would certainly depend if she is an IC or employee. nm
x
It does depend on the account
Just make sure you get more than one account. Some have more work than others. If you want to email me which account your getting put on then I can tell you what that account has been looking like.
I would think it would depend on the account.
Not all accounts require weekend coverage.
All of these factors depend on the
x
I think it would depend on the reason.
If there was no work that would be one thing. If there was work and you weren't doing it or consistently not getting your lines, then I think they would take a look at the reason why.

I had a friend who was IC who never got the required lines, refused to take on anymore accounts (she only had one) and they finally let her go.
Must depend on account at OSI
I've worked there for 6 months and love it.  No problems.  I don't feel micromanaged.  I have plenty of work and it seems to me like they basically just leave you alone and let you work.
May depend on account, but no 12
hour window, and again depending on account and shift worked there may be some flexibility, but if I was 15 minutes late for my shift they were calling me.  It only happened once.  All the times I was early or worked OT without OT pay didn't count for anything.
Must depend on the account
I've never had a problem making the line count for the pay period, whether VR or straight transcription, working an 8-hour day.

Guess it must depend on the account.

It's going to depend on your account

My account is pretty busy all the time, except for the holiday periods, when everyone is slow.  Doctors take time off, too.  I've only had it be busy at Christmas and then this past July 4th.  The rest of the time, the work is really steady.  They have a variety of accounts, though.  The accounts they are hiring for, I believe, are for full time, so I am going to assume (!) that they have full time work to offer someone.

If you'll read the archives you'll find out everything
you want to know, none of it good.
MTs who depend on a paycheck will just love you.
There's a reason for everyone doing their fair share, and only more when asked. Clearly you don't care who you take money from.

Try finding private accounts where you aren't robbing a single mother of formula for her baby, will you?
I think e-mail might depend on what account you do. SM

I got eight last Friday and 6 on Saturday.  That's a lot as far as I am concerned and they all same the same thing.
