Where to go with this, great ideas...

So what kind of ID could we use that is known by all of us and would not be known by the company? Bottom line, whatever we would say there could possibly be reported back by an MT who is on the fence or feeling loyal to share what is being said. But, the idea would be to create a forum that, for the most part, is out of a public venue where everyone can see and everyone can monitor. More ideas? Anyone up for creating a yahoo list? I have no idea if this can be done anonymously.

    Some ideas...sm

I hope you decide to look for your own accounts.  If you wait until you know everything there is to know about running a home business, you will never accomplish anything.  Do you think every entrepreneur—Bill Gates, Henry Ford, Martha Stewart--knew everything when they started out?

I have had my own accounts over the years and with some, I have signed a contract.  With a few doctors in solo practice, we didn’t sign contracts and I had no problems.  I sent out flyers or letters of introduction in the area where I lived. I also called every physician office to follow up.  My first account came from the local hospital MT department.  None of the other MTs had time to do the account, so an acquaintance asked if I was interested.   So contact MT departments to see if any doctors are looking for someone.

If you send out flyers or letters, have someone you trust who is very good at spelling and grammar proofread them before you send them out.  Remember that your language skills are what the client is buying, so be sure everything is letter perfect.

Try to find accounts close to home if you have to pick up and deliver.  If you have clients who are far away and you have to drive there a few times a week, charge them a little extra.  Make friends with the office staff so they’ll be willing to help you out when you need them to look up patient names, referring doctor addresses, etc.

As far as what to charge, it depends on where you live.  Remember that you have to pay taxes on what you make, and the physician will send you a 1099 form at the end of the year.  So charge anywhere from 15 cents to 20 cents per line, depending on where you live.

I use the Microsoft word count to calculate line count, but you can buy software to do that if you like.

Be sure to have a few backup people to help you out when you want to take time off or if you’re sick or your kids are sick.

Make macros so you maximize your time, and always use your word Expander software, or Microsoft autocorrect, to the max while transcribing.  I include an invoice with every batch of work delivered and get paid every week.  I had one doctor in the past who was very demanding but very slow to pay.  I had to go see him and tell him I rely on that income and I need it NOW, and would not take any more work, or return any, until I received payment. I finally quit working for him because he would never pay me on time.

    Good luck!

    I have several ideas...
but do not want to do anything until that check is in the bank. I appreciate your suggestion. I will post a message with my name and what happens once the check is deposited. Thanks!
Or if you have any other ideas

OR..if you have a company you can recommend, I would also be interested in hearing about it.  I need to start the process somewhere immediatel (have two children at home and one in college, so down time isn't really much of an option for me).

I do have 11 years experience, and if someone can recommend a really decent company, I would be happy to go on as a referral.

    Any ideas???

    Any Ideas??

I know it is almost impossible to start a union to protect us against pathetic wages, but if anyone can come up with any ideas on what we can do as MTs, speak up.  I'll fund, start, do anything if the result is fair treatment and fair pay.  The organizations out there are geared for the employers to pat themselves on the back, not for us!  Paying memberships for those as an MT is just pointless.  We need these employers to come to us instead of us sending out a zillion resumes only to be told they pay 1 cpl.  I've been an MT a long time, I believe in it and I like it, but I want to love it again.   According to salary.com, the median salary for an MT is $36,000, well many MTs aren't coming close to that.  We need to do something - Thanks!

Who comes up with the ideas that
stuff like that is a good idea or a way to indicate appreciation -- I think they just look for the cheapest way out. The worst by far was the year MQ gave $30,000 to AAMT in our honor!!!!! Seriously, if they had that to give, they should have given it to those who earned it for them.
Your suggestions would be welcome, Sue. Any ideas?
    XX
Any ideas who the culprit might be?
If you focus real hard, you might at least be able to narrow it down to a dozen or so possible perps.
Thanks, Sue. Your ideas make sense.

Thanks for the creative ideas. I will do that. My acct. mgr....sm

already e-mailed me today with a concern over production, as if they're surprised it is so low.  Perfect opportunity to respond with my own concerns.

    Sounds like my husband's ideas
He is always the optimist, I am the opposite. I consider him naïve because he seems to believe most told him. I can understand what you are talking about. I have thought just in the past few years (now since I am in my older years) that if worse came to worst, at least I would have my retirement fund (the work doing now is after being outsourced from this place I will now draw funds from) and then social security kicks in for me next year. I want to continue working plus drawing full benefits from social security and the retirement- that is my goal and I hope to make it.
How do you think this new pay plan will affect that rate. Any ideas.
    :
People's ideas of rudenss vastly different. Who is to
    x
Webmedx fits that bill, great company, great benefits, great pay and always on time. NM

Great company, great boss, great account!!!nm

System great, pay good, everything great, but most managers from old Edix, problems, poor people ski
when you are out of work, you are out of luck. If you are good at brown-nosing, are tough enough to be without any self-esteem, and have maybe money coming into the household on the side in case you tick someone off, then you may succeed, for a little while.

Don't ever ask questions or have problems with anything. Don't ever have a problem. Don't think you will have any control over anything you do, either.

A few 'good' managers remained when I left, but the new ones were all from the old Edix, and were completely into numbers, cared nothing for individual MTs...if there is work, you BETTER be working. If there no work, you will hear nothing, no one will help you.
You are pathetic! I have a great life, loving family, work for a great company.
You might want to fix that.

You really don't have to shout (angry person), but yes you are wrong!!

That is my last word to you!

I will add that getting a great pay check every other Friday from Medware really puts a huge smile on my face.
Oracle is great. Bayscribe is wonderful great line counts.
The trainer at OTI will always answer any questions about the platform and if you have any problems they have already worked them out, so just ask. Good luck!
YOG - Lots of work, great office staff, great money. NM

Loved Alltype! Great management and great accounts.
wah  -  i miss it there!
It's a great company -- lots of work and great pay. sm
Web site is www.mditrans.net.  If you need anymore info, feel free to ask.
AXOLOTL - A GREAT COMPANY WITH GREAT INSURANCE
Axolotl has AWESOME, AFFORDABLE insurance.  Family plan medical and dental costs a little over $300.00 MONTHLY.  They also pay for family plan vision in its entirety.  STD, LTD, 401K with match and flex spending account, great PTO and HOLIDAY pay.  OH and paid downtime in the case you run out of work, which doesn't happen often!!!
Great pay, great benefits for 11+ years..sm
I've just started with this great company (eMTS).  I have 11+ years of experience and I was started at .10 per line as a regular employee, not IC, with a huge sign-on bonus, full benefits, very nice people, and a good account.  So far, this is the best experience I've had in my years as a transcriptionist.  Unfortunately, I don't believe they're hiring more right now, but you could always check in with them, they're online at eMTS.com.  The management seems to really care and they work with you.
    Great company, great boss....

I use to work there.  The dictators on my account were really good.  They use Emdat/Inscribe.  Pay on 1st and 15th by direct deposit.

That''s great and I've heard they pay great as well.
I just have heard a lot of adjectives for a few accounts - zinger, killer, impossible, etc., and I sure know I couldn't hack it there. But I'm sure they know what they are getting into when they sign up.
Great little company..I worked there for a short time, IC, and pay always on time, great owner too!
I had good dictators, they use FTP, and I had a 12-hour window to return the work.
Started small; great company. Rapid growth; not so great company
First year I was there was like heaven. Then the big growth spurt when they hired managers from another company (that I had run away from before because of their bad management) and let them kind of take over. Although I have no proof it was as though I got 'bumped' by these new people when they came in and I lost a good account, good manager, etc. My paycheck went down every month lower and lower, and it became harder and harder to make my minimal lines. Having any kind of advocate was nonexistent.

It depends on you and what kind of MT you are. Seems to me there are pretty much 2 types...

Sports like basketball where you have the pros who play with finesse, and then you have street players who think it is all about physical strength, period. More and more the physical strength is winning but the art of the game gets lost more and more...

As in this country where there are almost 2 sides now, those with intellect and thoughtfulness, and those who think the only way to be strong and be a leader is to beat up everyone who does not agree with you...and force your will on others.

Suffice it to say in my opinion WMX changed its philosophy of the way it treated employees and lost its heart when it grew, and it was literally almost overnight...

If you are a mass producer who has no care of what it takes to make money, if you are a 'street fighter' then it would probably be for you because you WILL have to fight for everything. Fight for the right account, fight for lines, fight to be treated fairly, etc. If you appreciate MTing for the art of MTing or have any kind of joy for the profession, my guess is you will not make it there very long...

This is happening all throughout the what used to be called profession. Seems to happening all through everything these days. Humanity and heart are being pushed down to the bottom...
Great pay rate on a 55 ccl, great lady to work for and work is not tough. sm

It is all IC work, although you still are expected to give a schedule if you are doing stat coverage.  Only major drawback is the big wait for your first check -- almost a month from the time of your first invoice.

    Good luck!

Wow - you all have given me great, great things .. sm
to think about and consider. I know myself well enough that I realize I don't always things through well enough before acting.

I do appreciate everyone's comments - both pro and con. This is exactly why I decided to ask for opinions. Thanks so much for not laughing at me and just saying that a hospital job is always the way to go. I'm pretty sure that I'll apply, and I already feel better prepared. You all are great!
Yep, they get great lines and great QA
yeah I see your point - because all the crap dictations go to everyone else :( Kind of makes steam come out of your ears doesn't it LOL
    Not So Great

Yes it is the Transcend platform (one of them) but it's not so great.  It's terrible.  Makes working with the AIM system a cake walk!

    That's great!

Enjoy it while it lasts, and please come back next month this time and let us know how you're doing because you're in for a very rude awakening.

They are not that great anyway.
    nm
Getting 10 cpl is not so great when
you have to struggle to meet your lines and especially when there is no work. I am not the only one who has had a terrible experience as they have a high turnover rate with their employees and management staff. Obviously something is wrong....
    Great. Thank you!
    :)
    SHE is NOT that GREAT

Sits on the fence a lot....not completely honset.

    They ARE great
    nm
    This is great!

This is so good that I passed it on to friends.  My attitude gets bad sometimes, and I wish it didn't, but sometimes they push you to the quick and then you sufferfor getting things off your chest.  That's not so good, is it, in this formulation.

    ?

How are they bad? I think they are great.
    nm
Little to none for me too. Used to be great. nm
    nm
Not that great, if you ask me
    nm
    If they are so great....
why are always advertising?  If there is that kind of turnover, maybe they're not so great and the cheerleaders protest too much.
    Great to me so far
I hope it stays that way, but so far, so good.
    I think that's great...
I'm assuming you have a steady workflow.  My issue is, why hire me full time if you do not have enough work to keep me busy?  I'm looking elsewhere and will be leaving soon.  Do you work on more than one account?  I've asked for more work and was told It's unusually slow on all accounts.  Count your bleesings.
Yes...they have been great, but ...sm

Just a little concerned.  I have not been as dependable with my work schedule as before due to family illness.  It has been bothering me for several weeks.  I am going to talk with my supervisor.  I did not want to mention it to her, just ignore it, because I was afraid she would think that I was making excuses - but I really am not.  So, hopefully she will understand and hopefully I can show them that I can be depended on once again.  I really LIKE the company and would be very upset if I were to be let go.  I feel like this is the best place for me and things happened that I had no control over.  Does that make sense?  What would you do in a situation like that?  I hope I did the right thing.

    I think they are great
I have been with SPI for quite some time now and it has been a completely positive experience. Everyone that I work with is great. My supervisor is the best. Great communication. The benefits are wonderful. My schedule is very flexible. I always have plenty of work. In my opinion, they are a great company to work for. Good luck to you if you choose to join SPI.
MDI-FL is a great co... (sm)

Should be - They are great at it. nm

I got the job!! With a great
lady to work with to boot.  Thanks so much for posting that on here or I would've never found it.  I owe you one!
    wow-that's great
How do you stay motivated? I do about 375 to 400 but am trying to do more. I use ShortHand. Do you use an Expander and which one???
