preferably with a company who appreciates an experienced and quality MT. As long as they have enough U.S. MT's to work for these wages, our pay scale will continue to decline.

I get paid by the minute & gross line - 1.70 and .10 gross line (all cardio) and make about $3,000 every 2 weeks. I am a fossil and not that fast anymore, and I know younger MTs with more speed could make more.
Out of curiosity......

Since the acquisition of Cymed, how many MTs at SPi have lost their jobs or had their workload lightened?   


I have heard already from at least eight MTs who have had all of their work taken from them.   Just curious.   


I also have heard from three editors who have lost their jobs completely.

How many accounts are you on? I'm on 6 now and I'm hoping that's enough to keep me busy as full time. I have been part time for the last year and did have to take a ton of time off since November.

a lot of money.  Its subjective I would like to take a little survey and see what everyone classifies as alot of money.  Just purely out of curiosity and to lighten things up a little around here.
I did not settle

I was hired in by a MTSO I will not name on this board because the owner and one of the team leads often post emails on this board as misguided MTs.  I was told after being hired that the account immediately will become VR.  Then after signining on the dotted line, I was informed that I will be doing consults, but failed to inform me that they were hard, fast, operative note consults with small hard to understand words in between that you have to listen to repeatedly with VR.  Well, since I was there I decided to give the account my full attention and skills and took VR seriously. However on a daily basis, emails started pouring in stating that the hospital was having problems with our work and many errors.  I gradually became aware of the mess I got myself into.  Emails daily poured in with correction changes,  add ons, etc, but we were never given account specifics, instructions, etc.  The story goes on and on.  Then, we were told that our pay will be decreased if we were one of the ones the hospital found an error on.  I also was told that we needed to be whipped in shape and we needed to know how lucky we were to be doing VR.  Now, granted, I did not find VR that bad, but the account, operative consults were no cake walk and the MTs on this account were dropping like flies.   I did the unthinkable, I quit without a plan.  I do not recommend this to anyone, but I just got fed up and refused to settle and knew that they were lucky to have me and not the other way around.  To date, I have had 6 job offers and continue to get phone calls, including one to work in house, but with no benefits.   I am not opposed to VR, but am opposed to being treated and told anything.  I did not settle and I am glad I did not.

That is why the line rates have dropped so low.
How would they know I wouldn't settle??
I suppose you could be right, but peace of mind means a lot to me as well as affordable single health insurance coverage. I currently only make 8.5 cpl but have good benefits. My present company is experiencing some growth pains and I am torn between riding them out as I have in the past or browsing around for something better.

In response to your mention of raises...you're right. Until last year, I was never offered a raise. If I felt I needed to make more money, I had to work more--perhaps there's our answer:)

Oh, didn't settle at all
Because I have a steady job making a really good salary, and easy at that. I don't have to work 24/7 either in order to do that, in fact only work part time. I am just amazed at the bunch of bozos on here who are wearing their arms, shoulders, backs, elbows, etc. out trying to make it at a job where they are putting in 10-14 hour days not making it and yet they talk about refusing to do VR. So glad I started a few years ago and have a great system and not falling into that category of being scared to death of new technology. Oh, and forgot to mention the fact of VR picking up the majority of ESLs, such a good thing as far as I am concerned. Hey, type on, no sweat off my brow!

I did not take into account the hypersensitivity of those with low self image.  On your second point, I agree people need to see a variety of opinions about the companies - no individual's opinion is worth more than another's.

actually, it was my ER doc who said VR was garbage...
to tell you the truth and he said he hated the system, hated using it, hated the results and all the errors even though it had been edited by professional MTs.

That was not very complimentary to yourself but I think we get the gist. You are not the first person to complain about this company so we heard you loud and clear. You post did make me laugh and that's good too..

That's because they know what a garbage account it is!
It's always amazing to me what MTs will put up with.  Don't let them bully you!  I would refuse to work on this account too. 
VR is garbage, for the most part.
is that it's that whole 'guys and gagets' thing. Most big companies, hospitals are run by guys, and guys just love their toys!

Look at the cars they buy. The computers. The cameras and camcorders. The more bells and whistles, the better. Never mind if they'll never use them, or if they don't work so well. They just WANT 'em.

I think a lot of the big-wigs still buy into the notion that 'Whoever dies with the most toys - wins.'
The MQ VR is garbage. I've been doing it for 2 yrs
and it's never gotten any better. Why 2 years? Because it pays about what my other part-time job pays, and I know the accounts, so just keep along. However, I make 60% of what I made as a straight MT because the speed isn't any faster than straight MT. Their software STINKS.
Does verbatim equal garbage?
Do they say they want verbatim so they can blame the "dumb typer" when the patient record is incorrect?  The doctor says over and over that the patient is a male, yet "he" has had a hysterectomy, C-sections, etc.  Now, this is in a report where I also heard nothing about transgender. That is a minor example, but you get the point, right?  We are told to type what we hear.  When we hear garbage, we have to type garbage.  Apparently the hospital thinks the docs are flawless.  I want to give good patient care and provide accurate reports, but I can only do so much.

would pay QA less than what they are worth. Unfortunately there are quite a few of those! But there are still some good ones out there (although few) that really do care about quality are willing to pay more than secretary wages.

Some of the accounts will sink your line count fast. I think their clinic work is maybe worse than the acute care for that, but some of the acute care is really bad with horrible dictators.
Edit the contract or THIS IS GARBAGE
I signed one of those stupid things once and when it came time to quit, I had a nice new job that I wanted to start right away, not in 30 days, so I asked the OLD company and they agreed to let me off the hook, although they were not nice about it.  Ask if you can just x that part out on the contract.  Why is it that the contracts are ALL one sided, nothing good in it for the MT?  yOU CAN be canned in a moment's notice, but you are supposed to give 30 days.  What crap.
VR produces garbage, and it's too easy
to miss something, not to mention if you need to triple your number of lines to make the same amount of pay as straight transcription, that means MTs are going to have to rush them through. It's not a good situation any way you look at it.

you get no respect... here is the deal... many women want to work from home to be there for the kids... the MTSOs know this and push what anyone will put up with to the limits. It ain't worth it.

This thing about working 40 hours for benefits is garbage.
So if I do my usual 20,000 lines a pay period but only work 30 hours, I lose my benefits, but a newbie who takes 40 hours to do 12,000 lines gets benefits? This is insane. I've enjoyed working for MedQuist, but between this lousy new platform and stinking corporate rules, I've had it. My notice goes in next week, and I'm going back to school this quarter to become a P.A.

Meaning being in the same tax bracket we were in from 3 years ago back many years. If you have been in the field for a long time, you know what I am talking about. Someone needs to break this trend!
No respect for MTs
From what I hear they have little respect for their MTs, pay is way below industry standards, and they expect a lot but aren't offering a decent line rate for experienced MTs to join the company, very substandard line rates I believe around 7 cents a line entry rate no matter if you type clinic notes or radiology reports.  Do a search, seems that quantity is more important than quality and they don't pay enough for either.  Big turnover of editors too which in itself says something.

You are generalizing and surmising facts not in evidence (too much CourtTV!). Anyway, I have been an MT for 20 years, all types of MT, office, hospital, clinic, management, remote, locals, IC accounts, every specialty, radiology, psychiatry, even autopsies!! I was an English major before I transferred to human biology for Certification in Medical Assisting....4.0, perfect grammar, hard worker, very disciplined, average 200 lph or more, depending on accounts, platform, etc.....when I got back into MT after hiatus this fall, I tested with Amphion, along with several other companies....to my knowledge, I found all of the testing, subjective, objective, and transcription, really familiar and easy....after several offers from other companies and being hired at MQ at top Tier, I was told by Amphion I did not possess the special skills of an Amphion MT yet. Huh??????

but how many jobs even give you an option? You're an employee. Period.

If you look at the industry overall, look at IRS changes, look at global climate, you will see that this is a good thing. Or not.

I figure it's better to make lemonade when handed lemons than to see if I can be a sourpuss. :)
With all due respect, I have attended
with 2 nationals, one being the Squid, and I was quite frankly surprised at how tech un-savvy some of my fellow trainees were. They sounded like all they knew how to do was turn on the computer and get to their platform. Anything outside of that threw them into a tizzy and they were totally lost.

I can see where this particular MTSO is coming from, but she certainly could have worded the ad much better. It's rather insulting as it stands and I'm sure the kicker is that the pay is crap.

It has been reiterated time and time again that there are to be no spelling police, not to mention no bullying or harassing on this board, but people like that just have no respect for those policies or for their fellow MTs (or probably anybody else on the planet), so they really don't deserve to have an entire thread devoted to their self-centered little rantings. I wish there was some way the policies could be better enforced so the trolls and bullies would stop dominating this board, but alas, they are persistent in their attention-seeking behavior. So really, maybe if we would just ignore them, they would eventually get tired of not succeeding at getting everybody stirred up and go away. And if I spelled anything wrong here or made any errors in grammar, guess what. I DON'T CARE! And please, get a life!
Lack of Respect from MDI
This is really so sad! Why are they lying and being so secretive? I have no respect for them any longer. The past respect is just that: Passed respect. It works both ways. HOW DO THEY EXPECT PEOPLE TO LIVE? Better to be honest about their situation, whatever that is, than this. And regarding the emails never answered, no answer IS an answer and the message is that you and your email are not important enough for them to pay attention to. Shameless behavior on their part and no sing-song email from the owner can discount the fact that they are blatantly giving the shaft to loyal employees.
