Perhaps the company won't provide 800 numbers to them and so they have to IM people? I have heard the recruiter does make things up just to get people to take the job, maybe paid comission of some sort or has to hire a certain amount of people in order to keep the job. They sound very unprofessional. I'd surely stay away also.
