Slipping Backward - Line Rates and Cost of Living

This is for those of us who have been in the business awhile.

I stumbled across an online calculator that lets you input a dollar amount and a year in the past, and see what it would be today with cost of living increases.  (Link below).

You can use this with line rates and do it two ways - either as cents, which gives you a whole number result, or as dollars, which gives you the decimal portion as well.  In other words, if you made 8 CPL, you can either enter it as $0.08, or you can enter it as $8 and then move the decimal point over to the left two places in the result.  The multiplier is the same either way, so the dollar method with the extra decimal points is more precise.  Just remember to move the decimal point over.

I was making 10 cpl in 1990, so I gave it a spin and ran some different line rates through it using 1990 as the base year:

8 CPL = 12.96 in 2009

9 CPL = 14.6 in 2009

10 CPL = 16.2 in 2009

11 CPL = 17.8 in 2009

12 CPL = 19.4 in 2009

Is there any doubt that if the line rate had even kept up with the cost of living, people would not be feeling the way they do about this industry?

Then I did something else and tried different input amounts to see what amount in 1990 would have equalled 9 CPL today - a typical line rate.   I had to back off to 5.56.  Someone earning 9 CPL today is making the equivalent of less than 6 CPL in 1990.

It's kinda fascinating playing with this thing (the way watching a train wreck is fascinating, I mean).  Here's a link you can paste into your browser, or you can follow the link at the bottom of the post.

They're always slipping these things in casually at the end of the day. Stupid suits.

class
It must take a tremendous amount of class (not to mention bravery) to anonymously insult hard-working people on a board created specifically for MTs. Also, just how educated is a person who ends her opening sentence with a preposition? (gee!)
Little to no class here-thank the co SM
via email or even better a thank you card and get on with life.  How a company treats you once a year is really nothing to come to an MT board and post about.
Wow, Such Class

MDI-MD for SE work is top-class
Simple platform, great people, direct deposit, pays for adt, punctuation and spaces. Very strict QA. A small but growing company. Does not outsource.
Class action
You might have enough people to bring a class action, or just go together to hire an attorney...

Good luck!
D&L class action?
I think a bigger problem is many people complain, put up with it, or leave and complain but do not follow through - Otherwise how did it get so bad? I think everyone needs to fight back to this company and every company that does this THE FIRST time - if you bounce a check or do not pay what happens - you get it on your credit - send notes to the credit agency - you are a business - IC - and tell them - send them your unpaid invoices and they will place it on their credit report.
That's when we do a class-action and
Doesn't that sound like a plan?
At least YOU showed some class and maybe
reflect on how to treat valued employees.  Good for you! Boo for your bosses.
The cookbook was the most low class SM
so-called gift I have ever received in my life from any employer.  Don't forget they're saving money by never updating the home screen of the community page, we haven't had an employee of the month since November or December.  I will listen and gag at all the patronizing things they say and wait for the bad news to be delivered, whatever it turns out to be.
There is a not enough of a middle class to keep
xx
I believe the tax rate is the same for everyone in a certain class since you want to get technical a
You pay for your taxes at 100% if you are an IC but I dont think she was asking about taxes.

If you are single and have kids, then you usually pay no taxes or very little anyway unless you make over 30,000 a year.
disappearance of the middle class...
actually, we have always been 'poor' so to speak, so all this stuff is not affecting us so much...

I feel sorry for those who are now living like we are, only used to be considered well off; needing to cut back on spending, etc., noticing the pinch as the middle class gets squeezed more and more.

the funny part will be when we have some type of revolution in THIS country, which will happen. history only repeats. you keep people down and they will revolt. america is only going to take so much of this loss of liberties and rights, and jobs, total abuse of power and money against the little guy, etc.
more class than this site deserves...
fur shure!!HAHAHAHAHA!
ohhhhh my, sooo sorry (that was no class act)sm
And some on this board say the MTs complain (for no reason, their fault etc.

Ya know what, I am not here daily but I seem to see some of the same theme over and over and then to take heed. I know people stretch, etc, but I believe it, yes, I do.(one that got me recently was PAYPAL and having to pay $10 for a check that is $240 to get paid, (20 a month)
While the American middle class is shrinking every day.

I think everyone should file a class-action suit

We need to CALL THE FACILITIES and let them know what is going on! OR Class Action Lawsuit
...we need to all go out on strike! If we ALL stopped working tomorrow, called the facilities and let them know why, where would WebmedX be?
It's wearing thin, and I'll sign onto class action!
Right now I'm working full-time for one of the Axis of Evil...where, as we know, the recent denied-until-it-happened pay cuts and global equilibration of account levels screwed me, so I'm trying to get out of that hell hole, where the only thing left after VR gets done are the crappiest of the crap. I saw light at the end of the tunnel, and it turns out it was a train coming through to smack me head-on.

So I guess I'll hang onto the 2 jobs I have now, while I continue to look for 1 or maybe 2 that will be more amenable. I don't mind working hard and I don't really even mind the account job #2 has me on (although it has been NWA all week...must have hired some more bodies), but I hate the perceived sneakiness of it while they've got my back against the wall. GRRRR
Not really. The middle class is necessary - to support the welfare people and to pick up the slack f

need to clarify...I meant if you are taking a specific "training" class on the platform, navig
then no you are not getting paid...but if you are typing reports then yes...
So does yours. Perhaps you need a basic money class to learn to keep money. sm
I am off today and appalled at reading the posts on here.

Are you always this bitter? Do you have a family and friends who are safe and healthy? Count your blessings instead of being so angry and you might see that this is not a bad field to be in. It has kept food on my table for 27 years and will continue to do so. Is it harder now? You bet, but it is not impossible to make a good living of $50,000. You just have to work hard, give it your all and appreciate the good companies that are out there.

If I were an MTSO, I would find out who all these people posting such bitter posts are and find replacements for them a.s.a.p. Negativity spreads like poison, and with the world in the state it is, we should bond together not make it worse.
