is an EmployER Identification Number. You ONLY need one if you intend to have employees of your own and pay them. As an IC you should always get an 1099 and not an W2. You DO NOT need a business license to be an indpendent contractor doing transcription from home. You only need a business license if you are conducting a service type business with customers coming directly to your home for that service. That does not include telecommuting. You were ripped off for a license you do not need, and you do not need an EIN in order to work for someone else. If you are working for an MTSO, all you need is you SS#, which is NOT your EIN, as YOU do not have employees. They do.
