if the check is from an out of state bank,

they usually put a hold on it.

If you have the funds to cover the check, put it in savings and transfer savings to checking. That way the hold is on the savings account.

Are you saying your bank put a hold on your check - sm

Or that your employer is telling you that your check didn't clear because their bank has placed a hold on the checks?

I'm asking because I worked for an MTSO who would always pay late or bounce checks and claim it was his bank's fault as they were placing extended holds on his deposits thereby funds not being available - supposedly.

If it is your bank, then yes, they will place holds on the check until the funds clear the bank - anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on their policy.

If it is the MTSO, run, don't walk, away from this company.  I had this happen to me back in 2005/2006 and believe it or not, it is still happening and it is amazes me that companies like this can continue to do business this way.

I called the bank the check was drawn on and they said no upgrades at all to direct deposit and they
said that I was probably handed a line.  This latest stretch of the truth coupled with many others has me sending out resumes for a new change in 2006.  To me the writing is on the wall.  Though I really doubt they care if any of us leave.  I was on the same account for several years, suddenly switched without a reason which greatly impacted my pay, but yet find out from office staff my original account has plenty of work, so what gives?
Thanks everyone, I will check with my state

Check the laws in your state. SM

In my state, the number one reason to qualify for unemployment is lack of work, even if you are still employed (a lot of circumstances to consider here).  The company can threaten you all they want about production but if they are not providing the work, that is their fault.  If they let you go, you DO qualify IN ANY STATE if it is for lack of work.  The unemployment here has a 1 week waiting period, but apply for it ASAP.  It is only going to be about 50% of your regular income though.  This is determined by the highest amount of quarterly pay you received in the last 5 quarters. If there is any unemployment office near you, they can answer your questions.  You can even apply online there with a counselor available to help you if you have any problems.

Agreed, check your state's web site
like having at least 3 employees in the residing state, or earnings over XX dollars unless it is in such-and-such industry. Most states just require one employee with a very low income. I had to get an employer to read the web site and ask their tax accountant before they started cutting taxes.
Oh no. Also check to see if your tax deductions (fed, state, social security) were

Hope this helps. Their payroll department is very efficient. In fact, I feel dumb beside them. Very professional (not that they make me feel dumb).
Unless something has changed, health insurance rates vary state by state, so we may not have the
info you need.  I'm an IC so I don't have benefits.
You are correct. The state that rules is the state the employee lives in.
My state laws has is spelled out in their Code. If another state does not withhold, they are fined heavily and if they don't withhold for years, their fines are pretty bad. I worked for a Florida co that did not withhold income tax for my state even after I brought it to their attention in the state code. They kept saying that they would eventually and never did. After two plus years and when I left, I made it known to my state all the conversations, the state refunded me all late fees they charged me and then said they were going after the company in Florida because they had many employees in our state. They deserved it. They knew better.
The state you live in or the state where the MTSO is located? nm
nm
If company is in state that has no state taxes
they are not required to take out state taxes.  It's enough to keep up with your own state tax law code, could you imagine having to stay abreast of 49 other state tax codes?  The cost would be huge and ultimately passed on to us by lower line rates.  Regardless of who owes the tax, someone has to pay it.  Just a matter of convenience I guess.
Not state by state, federal labor law - sm
and you don't have to be asked. If you work it, asked or not, they have to pay time and a half OT rate for hours worked over 40 in a week.

Taken right from U.S. Dept of Labor -
An employer who requires or PERMITS an employee to work overtime is generally required to pay the employee premium pay for such overtime work. Employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)MUST receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek of at least one and one-half times their regular rates of pay. The FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or regular days of rest.

Extra pay for working weekends or nights is a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee (or the employee's representative). The FLSA does not require extra pay for weekend or night work or double time pay.

Different state to state. You would be surprised to find

IC can be defined differently state to state.  Even the IRS cannot come up with a definitive set of rules.  You would be surprised how many ICs actually get unemployment in some states.  If the unemployment claim form asks specifically if you are an independent contractor, do not lie, but if it does not, do not volunteer it.  Let the company prove you are a true IC according to the rules of your state.  All you lose is a few minutes filling out the claim form.  I would only do it as a last resort.  If you can find work fast, by all means go for it, but the way things are now with all the VR and off-shoring, it is a backup if you cannot find work.  No one should go hungry because they are afraid to file for Unemployment as an IC.

They should take out state taxes for the state

My own state recognizes partial unemployment, too, when your work gets cut down to half of your regular workload/income.

OSI has no PTO bank
OSI has no PTO banks and has stopped paying extra for holidays. You will be paid extra only if you type minimum line quota which is impossible because there is never any work on holidays.

So what companies have PTO banks or other benefits for holidays? That was the question. Thank you.
They must deduct FEDERAL taxes.. NOT STATE taxes.. if they took out state taxes.. it would be FLORID
which would only have to be refunded to you for you to pay YOUR state what you owe them which is nothing but a pain... be glad they weren't handling your state tax.. and I think in this case.. if someone at the IRS told you they have to deduct YOUR states taxes.. it is that person who is uneducated... they only have to deduce federal income tax

Oh sure, I'm the CEO and I own a bank, and part of the
London Bridge, and all that good stuff. SHEESH! You all ask for some good things about the company, but through your crystal ball you see the future. I still say, go ahead and leave...you'll find out soon enough that all is not well with other companies. I know - I've BTDT. EVERY company has editing positions now - it's the next phase of transcription, but never ever will ALL transcription be done by this method. I will continue to transcribe with a POSITIVE attitude, while you and your "Current Transcender" buddy leave and live with a NEGATIVE attitude. Good luck to you!
Your bank should cover you for the
fraudulent use of your card. In the meantime, please file a police report on your daughter's friend. The ATM should have photos of her. Good luck to you--that's awful.
It's in their bank account, not yours
I, too, struggled with the 401K plan at Medware because they are about 6 months behind in making the employee contribution.  I finally withdrew from the plan because I could save more money on my own.

Job Seekers/Job Bank
I never really noticed how many were coming on a daily basis before. They obviously haven't flocked to the other board. I think they have 7 postings for the whole month. Maybe companies just aren't hiring as much right now. I didn't notice the Job Bank before you said that. I never even think to look there. Maybe companies aren't thinking to post there, either.
you called their bank or yours?
x
I wonder if it is a bank thing?
See if they release the deposit before 2pm on Friday I get it on Saturday, but if they released it after 2pm I would not have gotten it until Monday. Maybe it is a bank thing?
mtjobs.com and the job bank here..sm
Both have employee jobs listed.  I know Med-Scribe, Focus (don't automatically count them out, not all have had bad experiences), WebmedX, eTransPlus and a couple others are hiring employees.
Could the MT also take it to a branch of the bank...
On which it was drawn, and would it then be stamped NSF? I was thinking it might save her some money for that bounce-back NSF fee, provided it's drawn on a national bank like BofA or WF where there might be a branch close to her home.

I've never had to do this (thank goddess!), so I'm kind of taking a shot in the dark here.
Does background check include credit check?

My bank did it when it merged with another and I did not find out
until I got their notice of changes two weeks after they began. It was my personal account and both my mortgage and car checks bounced because of it.
MRC seems to be new around here & has an ad in the Job Bank with an Indian contact. Don't know

I had the same thing, not bounced but not in the bank. Will never do
it again. Once may be explainable. Twice or more there is no excuse.
I am able to pay my bills as have money in the bank but
I really would like to be able to get the check when it is due. Direct deposit and just checked, still not there. I love my job and really make a decent salary as opposed to some who are not but gosh, looks like we could get when we are supposed to. It is not like we are not paid, just not on the date we are told.
Mine is in my bank. I just checked! nm

it is not unusual for a bank to hold a
check over a certain amount for up to a week.
bank account freeze
To anyone out there who is considering working for Preferred Transcriptions in Pennsylvania, I would say, keep far, far away.

My bank recently notified me of a 15-day hold on a check of theirs due to the account being frozen which means that it has a hold on it due to creditors. On top of that, they never pay on time. Most companies will pay in two weeks but here it is always at least three weeks after submission of invoice.

Have had no satisfaction from the company who are basically putting it on me. They said the check has cleared but refuse to provide documentation and are now ignoring my e-mails.

Will probably have to go to small claims court and just maybe, I will get my money. javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
She's having a good laugh all the way to the bank
Aren't you the one that signed on????????    The jokes on you MT....  You alone darling!  Have fun when the work runs out, and then you'll realize why these other MTs posted about TTD's scam in the past, and now trying it one more time to see if she can find any other suckers to work a set shift as an IC.
My 401K is in the bank and nothing has been lost
that way.
Wow, where do you bank? Mine is not there yet .. getting a bit nervous. :( nm

JUST SAY NO TO FIVE CENTS PER LINE!!!!

ESL??? Good Dictator????

IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was making 5 CENTS PER LINE BACK IN 1989!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure can't support my family on the same wages I made back in 1989, now, in 2009!!!

This is TWENTY YEARS LATER!!!!!!!

In 1989, my rent was $350/month.

In 2009, my mortgage (signed for in 2003) is $850/month.

I live in a house that is now considered to be in a
*low-rent* area!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I'm mad!!!!!!!!

JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya know, my grandmother always said talking to yourself means you either have $$ in the bank, or
you're losing your marbles!!  Will the real MQMT please stand up? or sit down?
Mine also can't seem to get the amount right and it is always the bank's fault. sm
right!
I know personally that when DD hits the bank, I can take it out right then and thus withdrawals can
It does not take 3-5 days. That just is not so.

As far as it being the MT's fault, it is the MT's fault only for relying on their DD to be there! Sorry, but when DD is supposed to be in there, it is supposed to be in there. I have two bank accounts, one is for bills only and that is the one where the DD hits. If my DD were late, I would incur charges. Luckily I work for a company that pays on time and you can always rely on them to have that money in the bank on time.

Unfortunately, some of you work for the MTSO who apparently cannot do that and apparently there are more than one of them.

They should offer to pay your late charges due to their lack of responsibility. However, when the MT has had this happen once, I would hope they would learn their lesson than to rely on doing it again because apparently the MTSOs that do this have no conscience.
Unless you cash the checks on the bank they are written on, you
have to cash them against funds in your own account. That's how the banks cover their behinds on NSF checks.
I meant bank---LOL...not enough coffee this morning...
