In Reply to: well I am glad you are a newbie sm - MT 30+

I never said I knew it all because I never will know it all. There is always something new to learn. I said I really didn't need any mentoring. The only questions I ever had dealt with not understanding what a doc was saying, not the content of the dictation. If the doc was easily understood, I was always able to do the research and find the answer to any questions I had and I still do. I've never asked a question on the Word Help board because, so far, I've never needed to.

I've learned some from other MTs but I've learned a lot more from my own digging and research and I'm not going to deny it.

I'm not nitpicking. I'm merely saying that there are some newbies who need very little help and there are also MTs who've been at this for years and still make lots of mistakes, such as equation. Not being a spelling cop or judgmental as we all make mistakes but we're not really supposed to make mistakes on reports and I have just noticed that word misspelled so many times by seasoned pros and you just happened to use it.

It is the same in any profession. There may be truckdrivers who've driven for 30 years and still are involved in accidents on a regular basis, simply because they're terrible drivers to begin with. On the other hand, you can have someone who's very careful and who has only been driving for a few years and they can have excellent driving skills. You shouldn't judge someone's skills by years on the job. It's not always an accurate judgement.

That's why I have a problem with MTs who claim they're worth more money, simply because of the amount of years on the job. They should be able to find a job easier than a newbie, and that's to be expected because companies expect them to have more knowledge, but they certainly don't deserve a higher wage. We all do the same type of work. Some of us may have more general/medical knowledge, some of us less but if all dictation was easily audible, the majority of us would be on the same playing field, regardless of our years in the business. I'm simply saying that just because you've heard a term many more times than someone else, it certainly doesn't mean that some newbies can't figure out that same term on their own without any help whatsoever. It's not a given that they're going to have to ask someone or leave a blank.

My opinions don't come from me being a newbie at MT. They come from what I've experienced and seen and I will feel the same in 10 years. Hopefully, I won't be doing this. I want to rest in my old age.

For those MTs who think the inept MTs need to be weeded out, I am in agreement and if the makers of medical spellcheck software ever go belly up, we'll see it happen. ;-)
