You have to remember that Word counts
everything. The headers, footers, etc. It's always going to be off if your company doesn't pay for headers or footers.
Accurate Word Counts
I would like to know how to check my line counts independently, to make sure that I am getting paid accurately for all lines, spaces, characters, etc. Currently I use Medrite and have always taken my line count from the system as it gives it to me. It runs with Microsoft Word 2003.

Since I am a high producer, after reading comments from others, I think even minor differences could make a substantial difference in my paycheck. An upgrade might be coming at the end of the year, and I wonder if this could affect counts in their favor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Comparing Cymed counts to Word
I work for Cymed and find that my counts are pretty comparable to what they were when I used Microsoft Word. I've done the same reports in both programs, and they were essentially the same, give or take a space or two. As someone mentioned, they did give you a heads up on not paying for spaces, which I agree doesn't seem fair, considering our thumbs work pretty hard and the report would certainly not be acceptable without them, but apparently you agreed to it.

As far as headers/footers, since I don't have to manipulate that information in any way, I honestly am okay with not getting paid for them. Heck, considering the time I save by not having to name my files, put page breaks, page 2 headings, count my lines, transmit files, etc., I actually am able to get more dictation done in the same amount of time than before in Word.

Curious, though. Since they have several different locations, may I ask which office you work out of?
I remember working for a hospital on the new IBM word processors - boy

didn't we think we were hot stuff using those!? Then I discovered this little feature on one of the menus called Stored Text and come to find out, you could actually type some text there and then call it back up?!?  So I did that with one of our docs who would rip through the physical exam so fast you could barely understand what he was saying BUT he always said the same thing (everyONE had a blood pressure of 120/80) so I typed up his spiel and then called it up and read along with him every time I had one of his reports. Then I figured it was so clever I showed it to the supervisor and was told we can't do that! Because it might lead to errors if you don't type it from scratch every time.

and how about those impact printers! Remember they were so loud you had to actually have a special plastic box to put over them and dampen the noise so they didn't sound like machine guns.

and here's the lil whippersnappers spouting off about ALL the files they have had in their entire CAREER have been .wav files   LOL too too funny

I don't remember using the word "glued" maybe you should unglue your eyes and read again

I know of one company that counts lines 3 different ways
Stats are enabled on one platform, not enabled on a second platform and also not enabled on a third platform. They are all Dictaphone Extext programs and the lines are counted three different ways depending on which account you are assigned to. Hope its not the same company you work for only to get a rude awakening.
Low line counts - difficult to make 1200 lines in 8 hours. sm
25 years of experience as an Acute Care MT and I had a difficult time getting 200 lph with Bayscribe. Any other accounts with other companies, I could easily transcribe 350-400 lph. Not at MDI - very difficult. I loved the account, but again it was difficult to get a decent line count.

It doesn't matter if you pay me 11 cpl if I can't get a decent line count. Couldn't take the 3 x day e-mails either.
Bayscribe stinks!
same lines as word document
The only thing you dont get paid for is the ADT screen, which takes me about 2 seconds to hit the search, date and cc. I really dont care about not getting paid for ADT because it doesn't take any time at all to do this. The document itself always comes out the same line count as word. I think the benefit for this program outweighs not getting paid for ADT at least for me. I also have 2 IC accounts on the side. Their programs are time consuming in figuring out codes, and then saving and sending it in a different format... plus dr. lists manual insert. Another thing on one account you have to email the person every time to get more work so it doesnt flow like DQS. So I think DQS is the most user friendly program I've used. When you copy and paste DQS to word its always been exactly the same lines for me and also the red headings you are paid for.
Keystrokers - do you work in Word - Can you use ShortHand - How many lines for fulltime? Thanks
nm
I've easily done 600, but it depends on the way a company counts lines and it depends on the
dictators. Obviously, if you have a good share of ESL, there is no way you could ever do 600 or 700. On really difficult ones, I usually run around 400 lines an hour and I have been working on this platform for 3 years.
No but was thinking about it. If you only had one blank

I'm considering going into office. I can't take this (blank)

cannot leave ID # blank

It will not allow me to leave the User ID # blank - won't work, so I guess I may have to check with the clinic and see if they have an ID number from when they registered their Olympus Software?

Thanks for the quick reply.  Bon

smartmed blank policy
Smartmed makes you list 3 sources for any blank you send to Qa. Then you put the report on hold and they send you back the answers for the blanks and you must pull up the report and fill them in. VERY LABORIOUS and consumes your pennies per line VERY rapidly.
What were you supposed to, leave a blank?
but if the QA person said it was Kathy instead of Cathy, how did the QA person know she got it right?
Hallelujah. (Blanky Blank). Where's the Tylenol?
Agree. Agree. Agree.

Both coporate sides make big bucks by paying so little. More to stuff in their pockets.

But because they are so desperate for anything, I can hear all the Indian MTs singing while doing our work:

Every time it rains, it rains -- Rupees from heaven!

The CEOs of corporations don't have pupils in their eyes--they have dollar signs.

The platform is Word. Their program works with Word but does not change how Word works. nm
The benefits just changed the first part of this month. I don't have them but I remember them being reasonabl for a single person. Family and spouse was not reasonable in any way (in my opinion).
small to medium company that works in Word or Word-based program - email me. nm
nm
ExText is integrated with Word. Auto correct is a part of Word.
ExText is a Word based platform. When the page opens for you to type the document it will be just like you are typing in MS Word.
anyone work for Oracle - do they use Word or a Word-based program - e-mail me nm

Just wanna work in Word - need company that works in WORD! nm

Their program works with Word and does not change how Word functions. sm
You use your own expander. Overall I feel it is user friendly and I like it.
Does the Emdat platform use Word or is it Word-based? nm

I used to have a QA guy that couldn't transcribe, couldn't fill in a blank,

but was anal retentive when it came to punctuation.  You would have a report with 10 blanks in it because of poor sound quality, and he wouldn't fill in one blank, but he had put commas all throughout your report, or taken apostrophes out, etc. and he wasn't correct in his punctuation a lot of the time.   Several of the MTs complained about him and asked to not have him do their QA, so he was demoted from QA to an MT.  Well, as I said earlier, he couldn't fill in a blank.  I saw a couple of his reports and there was blank after blank in reports that I had no trouble with at all.  He also didn't proof his reports because he would have inapproriate/incorrect expansions in them.  Not sure if he left on his own, or didn't really have a choice.  Anyway, talk to your supervisor.  Maybe this person is just on a power trip, knows you are new and wants to train you to do it her way, even if your way isn't incorrect.  I think punctuation is a valid issue, but if it doesn't change the integrity of the report and there are no other errors it shouldn't be flagged by QA.    You could also take into account her corrections and maybe try to use a few more commas, etc. and that might help.

Word for Word Medical Transcription
Pros and cons please.
In his ad, he's asking for Word Perfect, not Word, if that matters. nm

The platform is not Word, but it is Word-based. I
had little Word experience and the recruiter told me to try to find a book to learn the basics of Word as their program is Word-based.
Now I wish they would just call me back......no word no word and
What is up with these MT companies that advertise. They don't even answer. I have a great resume, tons of experience. I'm confused.
1800 lines is easily achieved. I average 300-340 lines per hour. nm
x
10 lines per minute = 1500 lines for 150 minutes - average. nm

I average 1200-1400 lines per day with a national, and am only getting around 600-800 lines per day.
It's been this way since the day before Thanksgiving. I've been doing this for almost 30 years now, and more often than from Thanksgiving until the new year is the slowest time of the year. I have some months where I am swamped with up to 2000 lines per day. I stash that little extra money, and take advantage of a handful of extremely slow days this time of the year to actually cook dinner, decorate for Christmas, or do Christmas shopping. I actually anticipate this slow time every year and have grown to enjoy the breathing time. Any time I have attempted to pick up extra work with another company to supplement these slow times, the minute I get adjusted to the new accounts, etc. I have no time to finish all of my work because my full time job with national gets slammed again. Hang in there if you can, and hopefully your work will pick up significantly around New Years.
They work with you to make sure you get the lines required or the amount of lines you want...
I have never had a problem getting more work
Minimum lines for FT used to be 60,000 keystrokes a day, about 925 lines. Pay was good. Just not a

Yes it is possible to double your lines. I cant type 460 lines an hour but I can get those with VR

word for word company
does anyone know about word for word transcription company?  how are they to work for, platform?  thanks in advance!
I was told I could use word pad since I don't have word

I have 1 computer to speak of that I did not buy personally.  the company has their own platform and their own computer to be rented.  I would not be typing in word.  I have never had a problem testing this way before.  I am not saying certified is better.  I was explaining my circumstance.  I have my own personal computer ordered for my use and I wanted to test fast without waiting. geez.

Regular lines, not weighted lines
was what I got paid for....
12K lines payperiod is 6K lines a week.
nm
0.8 x 1000 lines = $80.00 - 0.8 x 1500 lines = $120.

"overtime" is not a generic word. "incentive" is a generic word. Over time means time

off counts
Truthfully if it was a small enough discrepancy then I would and yes I could find a different job but it could just be that I need a different line counter. Do you use a line counter and if so which one do you use. Using MT Stars, Abacus, and Word Traverse I get a count of 1717 and I-Chart gives me 1655.15; MT Stars, etc. 1409, I-Chart 1350.55; MT Stars, etc. 1144, I-Chart 1088.32. If all the counters that I have used gave me all different counts I would be done with it but these 3 give me identical counts. As stated before in actuality its not really that bad because on the bigger picture its not that much money but this seems to be escalating and in order to monitor that I would need a comparable line counter which is the reason I asked what line counters others might be using. The problem could very well be that I just need to try a different line counter.
If you mean the 3 that are all together, that counts as ONE.

Wow, really. I can't even remember the
I will be calling KS today then. Thank you for your honesty and getting back to me.
I remember that, too. Everyone was trying to get on with them.

I had two MT friends who worked there, then things started going south.  They kept trying to get me to apply there.

i remember...
a posting from someone saying they are good to work with and are hiring. sorry dont remember much else. good luck

I don't remember,
Sorry.
That is exactly how I remember it.
They did pay me a good line rate, but with no headers/footers, and I had a hard time making 1000 lines a day. I think I was on the worst account they had, BMH, about 90% ESL (worst I ever had too). My QA would call and scream at me for doing cardio, not for a mistake, but because I was not assigned to it. The clerks used to beg me to type it. She was supposedly the worst one there.
I can't remember her last name.
Been about 10 years since I worked for her.

I remember something about that but
don't remember which companies.  Can someone please tell me if Amphion, Cymed or Medware is one of these companies?  I'm about to apply to all 3 of them.
just remember...
The US MT will always be in demand. Unfortunately, in some cases only in an editing capacity. Do you think that work being transcribed in India is able to be edited and returned in an acceptable manner to the US doctor dictating it?  Absolutely not. The foreign physicians in our country depend on us to produce properly formatted reports, so how can a MT from India possibly come close to accomplishing this if it were not for the editing US MT. You really can't blame the US physician who contracts with a national co. and does not know his work is going to India. Why can't HIPAA reinforce a regulation stating that no US transcription should ever leave this country in any capacity?  Certain countries have restrictions on importing and exporting products. Why does are country not step up to the plat?  MTs have to form some kind of alliance to stop this...petitioning the government, etc.  Striking is not the answer because until some enforcement is in place, our jobs will continue to go overseas and back here for editing.
