... but here's one thing they used to do back in the dark ages, when friends and co-workers my age were getting married and having babies. The bride or mother-to-be would already have on hand her packets of thank-you notes, the kind you can buy at the store, and each guest would fill out one of the envelopes and address it to herself. That way, the thank-you note-writer did not have to actually address the envelopes.

And, of course, someone (perhaps the maid of honor?) is given the notebook during the gift opening to list who gave each gift, so when the thank-you notes are written, it's not "thank you for the lovely gift" but "thank you for the red-hot nightie" or whatever.

Another thing that only happened at one shower I went to, when my sister got married (eek) 36 years ago, at her shower, as the maid of honor, I was handed a paper plate and a pair of scissors. Huh? It turned out I was supposed to cut a hole in the middle of the plate, with a slit going to the edge--and then arrange all the ribbons and bows from the unwrapped gifts into the hole, through the slit, however I could get them on there, and the resulting creation was to be used as the bridal bouquet at the wedding rehearsal. Okaaaay.... It was actually a rehearsal-free wedding, but the woman throwing the shower didn't know that.

Then there are the games. The clothespin game, the toilet paper game, the cotton ball game, the potato game... if you want games, post a message saying so, and I'll tell you how they're played. (With the bride that young, some of the shower guests might even be agile enough to pull off the potato game....)
