We live in North Texas
and have been here our whole lives. Have visited both CC and Galveston a lot of times. We're thinking of moving closer to one of them, maybe on outskirts somewhere, but are just wondering pricing for homes or even just land to build on. Any idea if is it way high because of beaches?
I live in West Texas

I do not live in Texas but after reading your post, let me say
you do NOT have to have sex in order to get cervical cancer. I personally do not feel this is a message for kids to have sex. I have a daughter who is older, out on her own and she would have to make her own decision regarding this. If when she was growing up IF she had come to me and said she wanted birth control, knowing this was probably what was going to happen, i would have taken her to get this. I would much rather have a child on birth control that have a bunch of kids brought home to me to have to support and care for. I had my children and raised them, didn’t need any more. You can talk to children regarding this but eventually most will make up their own minds as to what they want to do, not their parents.
I'm originally from Binghamton, but I live in Texas now.

Where r u at in Texas? I live here too and argue with 50% of their rules!

I live in Texas and have had scrapple for breakfast before.....sm
I haven't seen it around lately. We have something down here that is similar but for some reason it really grosses me out....hog head cheese.
Do you live in Texas? Our electric bill
for our tiny 2 bedroom house, trying to keep from running the air conditioner too much, using spiral bulbs, turning everything off as much as possible & being careful, is still about $250-$300 in the summer months. I don't know why some states have cheap electricity and some are so high! It's crazy.
I got you beat :) I live in Texas. My house is only 1700 sq living foot. sm
My light bill or April was 455.00. My light bill for May is 408.00. By August, it will hit probably mid 600s. I have the spiral bulbs, turn everything off during the day when it is just me home (this includes the Central Air and it was 91 today - ugh!). Don't know what I am going to do as this will be 75% of my check every 2 weeks. Another reason I resigned from my job this week!
R u in Texas?

Same here! Texas and
hot! Can't wait for the window-opening weather!
Where in Texas? I'm in far
north Texas. Just wish my kids could see real snow! Hayseed, it does sound beautiful there! I worked for a company in Maine and got a lot of information and it just sounded sooooo beautiful! But here I am in Texas, no snow, just ice here and there!
OP in Texas, isn't she? Anyway, that's what
xx
and in Texas
almost 70 degrees and I have been out walking in the sunshine!
I'm a Texas
girl too - in Fort Worth, where are you??
New Texas Rule
I for one am so glad I do not live in Texas.  To force someone to take a shot like that!  It should be the parents who decide.   I have suffered from cervical cancer and no I do not want my two daughters having this injection.  We do not yet know enough about the side-effects and long-term effects of this new drug.
Southeast Texas?

.

I'm far North Texas
so that wouldn't work for me, but thanks for the info! Sounds like you got a great deal.
In that case, Texas ought to be against also
because their capital punishment rates right up there with Florida and I would bet Texas is definitely into whuppings!
$3.41-3.45 here in West Texas. I have been
checking out yard sales for a bicycle.  Not just about gas, I need to loose about 50 pounds plus all these short trips to the store is hard on the vehicle anyway.
I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm

I have a dilemma.  I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about.  At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food.  This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed.  I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him.  Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him.  Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would  never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously).  I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety.  I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care.  At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment.  Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold?  I know there are lots of animal lovers out there.  What does everyone think??

$2.06 in fort worth texas

Texas beaches suck.

School is out this Friday and my 2 kids will be home and I have to start getting up earlier and working in the early, early morning and late evenings!
There was a hospital here in Texas that called 911

It was a physician owned hospital.  The story was on CNN.  A man had back surgery there, had some sort of bad reaction to the anesthesia and the wife herself had to do CPR.  The surgeon walked in and told her to call 911.

The hospital has been shut down.

Children in Texas finally reunited
I was pleased to hear the children from the Texas ranch reuinited with their parents.  I could not figure out how the state could come in and remove the children without solid evidence of abuse.  They said they received an anonymous call from some girl who claimed she was an under aged bride?  However through the whole episode never once did this so called girl come forward.  I believe this was all a smoke screen so they could go in and disrupt this religious group.  They were not doing anything wrong.  They were living in the ways they believe is correct, just like any other baptist, catholic, or any other religion lives.  If it has to do with taxes, health care or whatever that should be settled in court, not yank their children away from them.  I have no doubts that if it was a baptist or one of their religious groups that they belong to none of this would have happened.  I am just pleased the children are finally reunited with their parents and it sounds like they are reaching some agreements to make sure the children will be safe "if" there is anything harmful going on.  Makes me even more glad I don't have children knowing that they can just be "ripped" away from me without a legal reason, but that's just me.
A very small town in West Texas

I live in an 890 sq foot rock house.  I am guessing at the sq foot actually.  It is close to 900 but not quite there.  It ihas 2 bedrooms, 1 bath.  Metal roof.  I live close to the schools.  I live 2 blocks from the local hospital.  I just applied for a job there in fact.  I worked 8 years for a big 300-bed multispeciality hospital that was 35 miles away.  I left because of the climbing gas prices and I thought I needed a break from the office politics.  I started working for an on-line transcription company and for some reason just cannot seem to produce the lines or make half the money I was making at the hospital.  I have been here 6 months already.   I applied to another company to try my luck there and they offered me a job but I read in the paper yetserday  this little hospital here is hiring.  They do light transcription, filing, I forget what else it said.   The best part is I will have benes.  As I was applying a nurse recognized me and was telling me about them and they have improved since I worked there 10 years ago.  I hope the pay has as well and I hope they still like me.  LOL.

I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line

after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn.  I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT!  My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!

I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working.  They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning.  That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid.  I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed.  I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died.  The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside.  I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up.  We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.

Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down.  It is war!

  (How un-PC is this emoticon?!)

Corpus Christi Texas - 150 miles of beach...
sand is very hard though....LOL - and since I was there, I heard they built up that city.  I was there in the 70s but I remember what a GREAT time we had (a bunch of us) and how laid back it was.....bring lots of sunscreen/block as it's subtropical sun there as is S. Florida.....and for west coast of Florida, Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa, Clearwater
Upper Texas coast, Houston area. sm
Now living in Austin near my daughter and grandson. God bless Texas! :)
New cervical cancer injection mandatory in Texas next year

Just heard starting next year in Texas young girls are being ordered to get the new cervical cancer injection, just passed by the governor of the state so I am sure there will be a lot of talk about this.

What would you all do? My SIL is making my DH attend my nephew's HS grad in Texas this June...sm

We live in Illinois.

He would be taking my youngest son with him also.  The total cost of the trip for the two of them would easily be $2000 since my DH does not get paid for taking time off work.  If he takes this trip that would mean no vacation for me or my other two kids next year since that's pretty much all we can afford is one vacation a year.  She is insisting her only brother (DH) be there at the actual ceremony which is on a Tuesday evening.  Then afterwards they plan on going out to dinner to celebrate - no party that would be it.

I would rather we go the following week, drive the entire family and stay the week and celebrate the whole week with them.  My son graduates high school in two years and I don't expect her to be at the ceremony for that.  We probably wouldn't have enough tickets for her anyway.

DH doesn't have the guts to tell her "No" since she's laying the guilt trip pretty thick.

Do you think we are obligated to go to the ceremony?  She has more than enough family members that live over there that could attend (grandparents, aunts, uncles, her other children).

Thanks for any input.

Forget what Texas beach bro. visits, but at low tide he says you walk out in knee-hi ...sm

water for a long long ways and water is clean and beautiful. Can't remember the name, but it's about a 3-hour drive from San Antonio. I'll see if I can locate it. They go there all the time. nm

Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
French toast using texas test bar-b-que bread. Yummy. Potato casserole is sm
the best, too!
southern style potatoes frozen (ore-ida)
1 can cream of chicken soap
8 ounces sour cream
1 stick butter
1 package mild cheddar cheest
mix all ingredients and bake for 45 minutes

Then if you want to add a meat such as ham or bacon you can do that.
Where do you live?? I live in Atlanta
and have been to the symphony here and definitely no hats- you can never go wrong with black dress/slacks. I like to dress a little more for this but the rules are definitely not prim and proper here.
I come from the old school, but live and let live - sm
Well, I tried "cohabitating" with a boyfriend when I was 22. We dated for a year, and 3 weeks after we moved in together, he went back to his ex-wife. Never again. I've been married 18 years now to the same guy. Guess I lucked out.

I don't think it's right to do in a biblical sense (even felt that way when I moved in with a guy but my young hormones took over my common sense) but it's sad more people aren't married, they choose to just live together without a great commitment. Then again, as my atty (he lives at the end of our street so I see him often when walking the dogs) always says, his father told him it should be $5,000 for a marriage license and free to get divorced.

As far as the children are concerned, well, I think you should be married before you have children but again, live and let live. I just don't like seeing children have to grow up without the other parent if it can be helped.

The NFL network recently interviewed a former NFL player, Warren Sapp. He was asked why we have so many jerks in the NFL like Terrell Owens, Adam Pacman Jones, etc. He said they all shared a common factor - no father or father figure in their lives growing up. He said to look at players who are humble and don't cause trouble - they are the product of a 2 parent household. It's sad to me because it's commonplace now, not the exception to rule, which I think it should be. I graduated high school in 1985 and even back then, a girl in school who got pregnant got sent away "to live with her aunt for a little while". It was a shame to be pregnant and unmarried but it's a sign of the times.

I sometimes wish I could have grown up in the 50s instead of 70s. :-)
I don't know what WASl test is but if it is anything like the TAKS test in Texas - then more powe
I hate standardized testing. I hate the way it is pushed and it is the only thing teachers 'preach' on the whole school year. Math and Reading is the big ones here until 5th grade and then science gets added in. Where is history? Where is grammar (no this is not included in the reading test)? Forget these stupid state standardized testing and get back to what is important.... an education!
You have? Where do you live??? lol

that would be everywhere, not just where I live. nm

don't know where U live but where I live the 80+ y/o.

I know plenty of 80+ y/o people where I live (and I'm 25 years behind them...kinda sorta)....who are MORE active than many I know much younger.  I see them going to the airports to jaunt around Paris/Spain, or just several times a year flying cross country to spend holidays with families, etc, etc.  So if you see 80+ as *old* or *very old* - think again.  It's an individual basis kind of thing, in my mind - OH AND BY THE WAY, none of the people I speak of have had plastic surgery of any kind and look FABULOUS!.........GOD BLESS 'EM!!!!  Good genes - genetics -

I you live in the
Pittsburgh area I know where you can find someone.  Elsewhere..no clue.  It is an avenue worth pursuing though.
How can you live with him?!
Honestly, you say you can't live without him, but yet he is mean and horrible! And think of what this is doing to your kids while you stay! The effects of living with an alcoholic may not be so apparent on the outside of your children, but believe my they are hurting! Been there, done that!

Advice: Get out now for you and the sake of your kids. My father was an alcoholic and still is to this day. After 15 years of marriage to him, my mother finally left and took us kids. Best thing she could have done for herself and for us! It was rough at first, but looking back I am glad she did it. She proved to me she was a strong woman and what a great example that you did not have to put up with the abuse from another person. My brother and I to this day have minimal communication with him. Well, at least I do. My brother has written him off!

Resources: A good lawyer and counseling for you and your kids.

I wish you all the best!
Not sure where you live........but
You're wrong. In this state, the teachers are not that well compensated, just the administration. THey do pay out of pocket for resources that they have put in for and supposed to have available that is determined by the school system, but supplies have not come in and they have to go out with their own money and order this stuff. They don't get answers from adminstration but still have to make sure they have the supplies ordered by the school system to teach the kids. The amount of work they do here is from 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon....no, they cannot leave when they want to. Most work all summer, either tutoring or summer school, or find summer jobs elsewhere just to make ends meet. I suppose it depends on the state one lives in, but here no teacher is retiring with 80K a year pension.
Others ought to live by this
My mother told us sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you. To try getting back at something so minute is the reason today why people are in such a rage. Another thing she told me- consider the source. Enough said.
