You can search for shelters by proximity to you.  You may find a shelter near you that you did not know existed.   Lots of these shelters post pictures and give the story about how the animal wound up at the shelter.  You might be able to find the perfect companion a city or two away, but it would be worth a little driving to rescue a needy animal.

I long for a dog but my husband is allergic.  Sometimes I consider trading him in at the shelter.
