I am there as well

I feel your pain.  My DH and I bought a fixer upper 12 years ago, lived well within our means for years until a medical illness struck my DH 6 years ago.  I immediately went back to work, but it did not make up for his salary and of course at the same time, our house needed some major work, roof, basement flooded, etc.

We used credit cards to get by and he has since gone back to work, but we still have that credit card debt.  We haven't been paying on them now for about a year and are looking at bankruptcy as an option.  We are not paying on them otherwise we would not eat, seriously.  I have cut back everything that is not necessary.  There are no cell phones, no cable, nothing.  I pick up all extra work possible.  DH was laid off again in November and has been searching for a job daily.

I have sold off all jewelry but my wedding ring and one necklace.  We can make it if we declare bankruptcy, but just barely with him on unemployment.  I am scared to declare bankruptcy, but I think that day is coming fast.  We heat with wood only, plan meals carefully, you name it.  Nothing goes to waste.

In the same boat.
