I wonder if you went to the same guy

I did. He was so nice, and I wanted to like the job he did on my cut and highlights, but it was awful.

I have never gotten into the ash colors, and what I've heard is that the purple disasters are because of using ash and non-ash colors. However, I remember one male who put ash brown over his hair color when it got too brassy, so it worked for him in reverse from what you are talking about.

What I was dealing with was caramel highlights that took my color much lighter and brassier than I liked. I specifically told him not to get any highlighter on a certain area that would turn extremely light. He failed to heed my advice. I have had temporary success by dyeing a darker brown over. But none of the dyes I've used have lasted long enough, and the light color ends up shining through. Part of it is that I have oily skin and can't use the special color shampoos very much.

It's time to dye again. Maybe if I go darker it will last longer. Sigh.
