I've talked with and been evaluated by multiple psychiatrists and had a long-term discussion with a very good psychologist. They all told me the same thing. I'm perfectly sane and definitely do not need the services of a psych - but gifted in a realm that requires like minds to understand. If you are indeed gifted, you know that there are times when you feel no one could possibly understand. The greatest comfort I've found is communicating with other gifted individuals. There are many more options open to finding resources now thanks to the internet, and I've found help, compassion, friendship and definitely understanding here. You are not alone.
