watch him when you bring him back in and as soon as you see he is going to potty, don't make a big deal out of it, but just calmly pick up him and say "potty outside". Both my dogs respond to "potty outside" by going to the door and waiting to be let out. I don't really recall how long it took to completely potty train. I know my second dog (white miniature schnauzer) was much harder than the first dog (salt and pepper miniature schnauzer).
