Call the school. I had a threat like this in my high school and they cancelled school that day.
Thankfully, because the person making the threats was found with material for home made pipe bombs and quit a bit of ammunition and a shotgun. He was arrested and charged. Never allowed back in the school.

I think it would be safer to call the school and get classes cancelled for a day to investigate versus make a scene in the parking lot, especially if the student with the knife is inside with the knife.

Good luck. If nothing happens, pull your child out of school for a week. See what happens. I know that sounds horrible, but small towns is where this happens most often.

He sort of just kept showing up in my life every once in awhile until I realized that he was the sweetest man I would ever meet. (He also got better looking with age, which doesn't hurt.)

pregnant girls were not allowed to even come to school. I think they must have had some kind of home school program or something, but most of the unwed pregnancies in our school happened on the Senior Trip, so they were out of school before they knew.

I agree.....school is a very scary place these days. I have 2 kids in school right now and a very good friend who is a teacher at the same school. Oh, the horror stories she can tell....names omitted, of course.
My son competed in his high school
state forensics competition this past weekend.  I competed in the "impromptu" area.  He walks into a room with 2 judges (and other spectators) and is given a paper with 3 catagories and he has to choose 1.  He is given 7 minutes from start to finish.  He usually takes about 2 minutes to write down some thoughts then he has to give his speech.  He does this 3 different times.  On the third speech his topics were "Rudy Guliani, Sanjaya ?last name?, and Tubby Smith.  My son does not watch AI and is not a big basketball fan.  He had to choose RG becuase he had no idea who the other two were.  Just thought I would tell this story since I often see posts on this page about AI.  BTW, there were about 8 of us in the room and only one person knew who Sanjaya was, and not a single person knew who Tubby was.

My high school boyfriend went on to become a
comic. While he is not famous yet, he has done pretty well and he was on CMT a few weeks ago with a couple of other comedians. So funny you ask this today, my parents are at Grocery Food convention about 7 hours from here and he was actucally the entertainment last night. He goes by Kelly Terranova.

Once to my high school sweetheart and then actually twice
to my husband before we finally got married (broke up one time).  Then the story gets a little crazier.  My husband and I got married, divorced after almost 2 years of marriage, remarried about 2 months later, stayed married for 7 more years, divorced again, remarried 6 months later, still married.  Together almost 30 years now.
Guess what......it still goes on in high school too.....sm

There are so many stories of homosexual high-schoolers being bullied and some even killed. I agree that they have to learn to live in the world as it is, but as high-schoolers, I am inclined to say they deserve some protection.
My best friend from high school kept

in contact for 37 years then had a falling out because I didn't inform her FIRST that my mom had died (had to call mom's family first). We had both married brothers the first time around, her mom always remembered my birthday and made me a pudding cake from scratch, but before the falling out, saw each other a couple times a month and phoned each other every other day. She died 2 years ago of colon cancer.

I had another friend from elemetary school that I lost track of after he moved to NJ in the late ཮s (I was a tomboy and we hung out together all the time). Found him a couple years ago and now when he and his wife come to visit his sisters, they come to my place, too. In fact, his wife was originally from this area and lived near my DH in elemetary school until her family moved to NJ. Small world, huh? His wife and I both do genealogy so we get together once a year, just the 2 of us, and make the rounds of cemeteries and historical societies.

Both of my children were out of high school when I chose this

job to be able to stay at home and work. I still wanted to be there for them and for my husband. I take great pride in my work and do a great job. Just because I chose a job that provided the "benefits" that I wanted does not make me unprofessional. A lot of people chose their professions based on the benefits that profession offers, but it doesn't make them a bit less professional. So, TM, I'm with you on this one. I chose this job to be able to stay at home and I'm not the least bit ashamed to tell anybody that's my reason.

High school teacher rudeness...sm

My daughter got a role in the upcoming spring musical.  The drama teacher hasn't published a practice schedule and so far my daughter has called every day with the time to be picked up.  I've sent the teacher 2 e-mails asking for a written  only to get no response.  Today I've sent her another e-mail with a CC to the principal stating this is very rude of her to not publish a schedule and expect parents to be available "whenever" she feels like having practice end with the kids not being told the schedule until they arrive to drama class.  My daughter says that several kids have told the drama teacher that they couldn't stay on some of these days she's called practice after school.

Have any of you ever encountered such rudeness and unpreparedness by a teacher?    If she doesn't give us a schedule by the end of this week then my husband has told our daughter that she will have to drop out of the play.  Practices so far have ended anywhere between 4:30-7:00 and I'm not going to sit around every day trying to guess what time they'll be done.  Plus my daughter doesn't have a cell phone and we're not getting her one just to use for this.   She's having to go to the school office to call us on her lunch time and miss part of lunch to place this call.

We have a local high school that is 99% minorities,
single parent homes.  Fights every day, guns and drugs every day, I think the drop-out rate is 65% (maybe more).  This year they went to uniforms and said there has been a significant change in attitude and everything else.    Uniforms tend to be cheaper than regular clothes and if needed there is assistance available.  They don't need as many "regular clothes."   I think the uniforms are hideous, but they were picked by the majority of the students.  I wouldn't have minded uniforms when I was in school because it sure would make getting dressed in the morning a lot easier.

buy me a pregnant mouse for my birthday (I had 3 pet mice). My mom was less than thrilled with them. So when the babies were born and old enough they were taken back to the pet store, who took them gladly since they could sell them. Don't want to know what happened to them, hopefully they did not become someone's dinner. It was kind of cool though, only animal I have had that has had babies, other than 2 chickens we hatched here a couple years ago anyways from our chickens.
There are a lot of options for at-home high school (sm)
There are many online high schools used for homeschooling. Some community colleges and 4-year colleges and universities have high school homeschooling options to check into. You may also have the option of her taking some college classes, but watch out...they may be run by gays and lesbians. What is wrong, again, with a gay and lesbian club?
My best friend from high school lives in
Charlottesville as well as my DH uncle. We absolutely love to visit there. I live in Bluefield, VA. My friend is a single mother (ex lives in Atlanta) raising her 12yr old daughter there. She is incredibly happy there. Not too long ago it was voted one of the best cities to raise a family. Good luck to you.
Dad went to high school with Jim Morrison from The Doors - sm
Saw the picture of him in the year book. My dad had a few classes with him and said he was just as weird as he was on stage. Imagine the entire class of 1961 in suits and ties and him in leather and a T-shirt. My dad recalls him loving to totally shock people in school with how he dressed and what he said. Imagine that!
High school class rings - how much is too much?...

I just about fell out of my chair when my junior brought me the price list from the school for class rings.  Most began at $250 with just a few in that price range.  Ouch - someone is getting rich!

I'm trying to figure out a budget for a ring for her and have sent her to research places like walmart.com   What do you think is a reasonable budget for a ring?

Welcome to 2008 - High School Hades
Locally we have had students suspended for:
Posting pictures on myspace making gang signs (not gang members just a very juvenile act)
Posting a revealing picture....
Posting a derogatory blog/rant about classmates, teaches, administrators etc,,,,,

I know that there are lots more for much less offensive reasons but those are the first ones to spring to mind.

I do not agree with children/teens doing this but I also dont agree with the school having such a far reach.

On a personal note My daughter was goofing off with friends while decorating posters and such before an activity. In an instant of total dingyness my daughter holds up a ziploc bag of sequence/beading and gives a thumbs up while pursing her lips.
This was reported to the school as her posting a pic of herself with a "controlled substance". My daughter was pulled from class by security and taken to a room where they started searching her school backpack and binder at which time she called me on her cell. By the time I was able to get to the school (which wasn't very long) My daughter was in tears being interrogated by "security" trying to get her to admit to drug use. We are still battling with the school over this and after a three day suspension are retaining a lawyer to protect her we are trying to get this off of her record. The police THANK GOD declined to pursue charges (For what I dont know)

May be George Orwell wasnt so far off.

Since this MySpace has been deleted and will stay deleted as long as Mom and Dad have anything to say about it
Bomb threat at son's high school....what would you do?sm

Sorry this is going to be long. I tried to keep it short but....too many details.

There was a bomb threat at my son's high school yesterday. He actually wasn't there because he has been sick the past 3 days but I was going to send him today.

My son's friend found the note in the cafeteria and subsequently turned it into the office. Of course police were called and evacuation took place, bomb sniffing dogs were brought in,  etc. I spoke to this boy and several of my son's other freinds and all but one think they know who wrote the note. The note said ".....all n**gers should die.....I hope everyone else is okay but a bomb is going to go off at 12:30.....". He said the note looked like it was actually written to someone else and not left behind for the school to find.Like it might have just fell out of someones pocket or something. Being the overprotective mother that I am, I think of everything bad. That being said,  the note didn't actually state that the bomb was going to go off yesterday or any specific day, just a time. Now, I'm sure he probably meant yesterday but....what if? I'm terrified to send my son to school. Also, who knows what this kid is capable of? What if he brings a gun to school today? Or sets off a bomb today knowing the school now thinks it was just a scare?  We are a small town and don't have a lot of trouble so we don't have metal detectors and stuff in the school and we aren't really prepared for any type of situation of that magnitude.

Now, to get to why the kids think they know who it is. There is a new kid in school who has been homeschooled all his life (not that it matters but I have to wonder if the reason is because his parents are also racist and didn't want their kid associating with blacks). Anyway, this boy comes to his new school and automatically starts calling the black kids n**gers without hesitation. Well, he said it to one of my son's freinds (black boy) and ended up getting hit a few times. Then a few days later....a bomb threat against the "n**gers".  The boys also say this kid is a little weird and seems like he might have some mental problems.

So, all that being said, I believe I have a moral responsibility to talk to the principal about my conversation with the boys. I hate to make accusations and insinuations (I really, really, really hate it when people insinuate things) but this is very serious. Back in my day in high school (the same high school as my son)  we had a bomb threat via phone, we were evacuated for a short while, dogs were brought in and we went right back to class. But today, after Columbine and everywhere else, you just absolutely cannot be too careful.  And since the boys thought this kid "seems" have some mental probs, it automatically brought to mind the guy who shot up Virginia Tech. After the fact, people said there were "warning signs".

I am however, a teeny, tiny bit hesitant because if this boy really did not write the note,(and the racial remarks just coincidently were made at the same time) I feel a little bit bad for what he will have to go through. But my love for my child and his friends is far greater than my feelings of sorriness (couldn't think of the right word) for that boy (especially since I have no love whatsoever for racists) so I definitely will be talking to the principal this morning. Besides, if this boy did end up doing something tragic in the future, I would not be able to live with myself knowing that I should have said something. Not to mention if my son were hurt or killed by him.

I was just wondering what others would do in this situation and if anyone has had any similar experiences.

A "Gay Friendly" high school

Chicago may get 'gay-friendly' high school.

Gay students bullied so much by classmates that their grades suffer are set to get a school more "friendly" to them in Chicago, Illinois. Local officials say the proposed Pride Campus will not be a "gay" school but is likely to include children who have been victimized for their sexual orientation or perceived orientation. Gay students who are harassed have lower grades and higher dropout rates than classmates who are heterosexual, a national study found last week. Link below...

I had an interdistrict transfer in high school...
but you have to have cooperation from both school districts--so some diplomacy is best when giving the reasons why.
I would have married my high school sweetheart

when we were supposed to get married. Instead, we both married someone else and both wound up with a son and both got divorced around the same time.

We have 5 anniversarys(sp) and I don't know which one to celebrate; i.e., the first time we met, the first time we were engaged, the first time we got back together again, the first time we "lived in sin", or when we really got married.

That was me my senior year of high school.
Since kindergarten for me, I was always above average in school. I was always on the Honor Roll. I always did my homework. I always cared about my grades. In 9th, 10th and 11th grades I still cared. I was in the National Honor Society and still making As and Bs. If I made a C, I was crushed. Then my senior year of high school, something changed. Keep in mind, that the summer before my senior year, my dear Aunt passed away suddenly and we were very close. That year, it seemed like I just stopped caring. The classes I were in had none of my friends. My lunch period had none of my friends. I just usually stayed in the library during lunch. That was the 1st semester. I still did my work and tried to do good. Then the 2nd semester hit and I really stopped caring. I quit doing any school work and that was HIGHLY unusual for me. I was just so sick of school. In March with only 2 or 3 months to go til graduation, I dropped out. All my teachers called because they were just so shocked because I had always been such a good student. The counselors came out to my house and talked with my mom and thought I had social anxiety, but I wouldn't talk to them. I don't know what happened. I just knew that I hated school with a passion and couldn't bear going anymore. I spent like a year wasting around and then I knew I had to get my diploma. So I went to the community college and got my GED. And then I went on to college and got my Associate's. I think that nowadays, they just make school so aggravating and hard for kids. There are horrible teachers who don't care. They depend so much on students passing these end of grade tests instead of going by their grades throughout the year. Such as my cousin for ex., she in in 5th grade and had ADHD. She is in a special class. So far this year, she has made only 1 C. The school sent out a letter half way through the year saying she is in danger of failing. Now, does that make any sense? No. She does great in school but on those end of grade tests, she just does not do good. So, if she fails the end of grade testing, even if she was on the Honor Roll throughout the whole year, she fails her grade. That is NOT fair. The school systems are just stupid i think. I think a lot of kids, once they get to high school, are just so sick of school and how things are, they just don't want to care anymore. I am sure your son will get over this slump. But with me, I dropped out but I still ended up with a diploma and going to college, so I am sure he will turn out fine.
graduation gift for high school sm
I know this subject was brought up before and some said up to a thousand dollars for high school (grandparent). I cannot afford this and it is almost being hinted that the kid needs money although already has a brand new car, is working and is going to a local community college to save money. The kid literally has everything, nice home, clothes, etc. We have worked our fingers to the bone literally and can't just "hand over" part of our retirement savings. If we give anything from a store it is always taken back for the money as it is never "good enough" and with the parents' approval. I almost want to get something nice engraved so it can't be returned.(Luggage is out.) How much would you take out of your savings, I don't know what to do. What would your limit be for a gift to an 18-year-old? The kid is a good kid and not the kid's fault, kind of a "tradition" to expect "cash" as a gift.
That in itself is strange! At our local high school,
students are allowed to bring whoever they want as a date, no forms to sign...
I love college and high school sports.
they make way too much money.
To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it in high school
and again when my son had to read it this past year. I just finished Can't Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flag. She has the quirkiest characters. It is impossible not to laugh out loud while reading all her books.

Off to Vegas to meet up with my best friend from high school. sm

I have not seen or heard from her since our 30-year-old sons were babies.  Then we found each other again on Classmates.com and arranged this little vacation.  Tonight I will see her after all these years.  I'm concerned that I won't have much to say (I'm a very quiet person normally) but we do have show tickets and horseback riding and shopping scheduled already plus I MUST find time to do some gambling (I live where there is NO gambling).  I'm very excited!!  Plus I booked Business Class tickets.

That Classmates.com is pretty amazing.  I have connected with not only her but my first real love (and first broken heart), 2 girl friends, and 2 old family friends.  I really love having this connection with the past because I have very few memories of my years until I was about 23 due to much trauma and it is great to go back and visit some good times.

Wish me luck!!

High school yearbook article - opinions please...sm

Hello,

Our daughter is on the yearbook staff for her high school.  Tonight she showed us the picture they made of the yearbook staff and I commented that one of the students looked very upset and depressed.  She said that she's that way and that they have let her have a whole page in the yearbook version that is going out to the students who buy it on CD (not the hard copy version) where this student is ranting and raging about how unfair life is, and she isn't happy she has to move at the end of this school year.

I told my daughter that I was mortified that they think it is acceptable....especially in this day and time where another student may see/hear her rantings and if they're emotionally unstable could possibly agree and hurt themselves.  I'm also concerned about this student not being happy and they're just letting her write about it.

Do you think I should be concerned and should express my concerns to the yearbook advisor or just leave it to the advisor to use good judgement and accept the windfall if there is any after this is published?

New high school cell phone policy
Friends of our work at a local high school. That school has become fed up with cell phone usage in their school, so they have become rather devious.

If a cell phone is caught ringing, the teacher takes it and sends it to the office. The only way the student can get their phone back is if the parent come to pick it up. Even if the student is 18.

But the nifty thing? The V.P. scrolls through the address book and tries to identify some of the other students. Then she goes to their classroom, stands outside the door and calls their phone from the confiscated phone. If she catches the student answering the phone - automatic Saturday school.

Sounds almost like entrapment.
I graduated the bottom of my high school class (#136 out of 137), but
I have an IQ of 160.
I knew some ladies from my church when I was in high school
that used to meet at the church to quilt. They would auction off the quilts when they were done with them and actually used the money to help in the community with families in need and they used some of it for a scholarship for their high schoolers going off to college.

I have seen some sell them at craft fairs and stuff. I never really got into that much of it though I used to help the church ladies once in a while.
This happened to a friend of mine from high school........sm
He had mono after we graduated from high school and was off work for about 5 weeks. He went back to work too early and, while driving home from work one day, his spleen just burst and he crashed into an oncoming log truck, killing him instantly. It was really a double tragedy because the first people on the scene to find him were his mom and dad, who had a bad heart anyway. His dad suffered a major MI on the spot and had to be taken to the ER. His poor mom lost her son that day and almost lost her husband.
Oh, this gave me high BP!! How dare a school counselor......sm
Take it into HIS hands to pull the girl and administer any kind of test at all, he does not have the legal right. He SHOULD have quietly contacted the girl's parents, told them about the rumor, and then SHUT UP, made himself available for counseling, but leaving parenting/medical matters to the parents, where they belong. If this were my own daughter, I fear I would be so enraged by this type of arrogant, stupid, unprofessional, illegal, and disresepctul acivity that I would become a one-woman vasectomy machine, the hard way. Talk about emotional distress?? That poor young girl and her parents. I can remember my days in high school in the early-mid 70s, parents were brought in and respected. OMG, this kind of "rumor" went around every time some nasty girl had a "fight" with another girl, they would have been hiring buses to drag these girls out....truly sickening situation, I hope this young lady is okay now, and has healed emotionally from it all, and thank God it was not true at all, for her sake, poor thing!
How much weight have you (or your husband) gained since high school?
15 for me and 30 for DH
My high school best friend had it in 10th grade
Missed about 2 weeks of school(made it to the prom but was hospitalized the next day). After she was "better" she never had any more problems with it. She is now 40.

One of DS's best friends (started when she was 15) had it and while she never had to be hospitalized, she was home schooled for a month. Everytime she would feel better she would overdue it and have a small relapse. This was 3 years ago and she still tires easily. She often naps but is still quite active in many ways.
Well, not famous for high school but my departed husband was friends with
Ernie Shavers (older boxer who fought Ali for the world championship) and he used to come to our home and he called me after husband died saying to contact him if I needed anything at all, also talked with Ali on the phone years ago and husband said I could meet him if I wanted but I would have been too tongue-tied to do anything but stutter, I am so star struck! Ernie was built like a brick ____ house!
my kids high school has rats falling from ceiling
For the record, Howard County Maryland was just ranked #1 in per capita income IN THE COUNTRY, yet my kids high school had 6 rats fall through the cafeteria ceiling Wednesday. Last year it was rats and sewage - three separate instances where sewage came up through the emergency shower, dripped from the hall ceilings, and came through the child life development pipes. Oh, sure that was fixed. And how in the world did the health department okay this? I tell ya, we sure do NOT put our money where our mouth is on this education battle. Our team mascot should NOT be Ben the rat!! Just so angry over it all.
