Insurance and pitbulls

Posted By: Dina on 2008-10-06
In Reply to: We have a city ordinance about pit bulls - and other aggressive breeds.

Yea insurance companies have a "black breed list" that usually include Pitbulls, German Shepherds, Boxers & Chow Chows. Some pitbulls have that aggressive nature in them that can be brought out, but you have to trace back to the breeder & get the history of that dog's mom/dad's temperment.

Pitbulls...sm

Further down this page, I saw a post that asked about people's favorite breed of dog.  I saw various posts with people's preferences.  Then I saw one that said "anything but a pitbull."  That really upsets me because you see I am the owner of a pitbull.  His name is CJ and he is the most affectionate, caring dog you could ever want.  He loves me and my family with everything in him.  I know before I got a pitbull and before my friend got one I too believed they were dangerous fighting dogs.  I was wrong.  Not all pits are used for fighting.  And it isn't in all pits to fight.  The way they are raised has a big part in it.  Those pits who fight are trained to fight.  Yes some pits are aggressive.  But not the majority.  You would be surprised to see how loving they can be.  Mine stays inside and he thinks he is a 70 pound lap dog.  He is such a big baby.  That is not to say he isn't protective.  If a stranger comes up he will show aggression and get very ugly.  BUT that is because he is scared and doesn't know this person's intentions.  He is protecting his family.  But once I let him know it is okay and we are okay with this person he will listen and go sit.  Once he gets to know someone he just wants to lick them and love on them.  He is just protective initially.  A lot of people don't know that pitbulls serve as therapy and service dogs.  Did you know Helen Kellar had a pitbull as her companion and to help her as she was blind.  Yes, look on the internet and you will even see a picture.  What about Petey the pit on the TV show "The Little Rascals"?  He spent countless hours with children everyday and never hurt anyone.  Do you think they would have let a dangerous dog do that?  Many celebrities such as the late crocodile hunter, Usher, Alicia Silverstone, Sinbad, Linda Blair, Vin Diesal, Bernadette Peters, and Rachal Ray have pitbulls.  What about the many pits who are heroes?  America's first war dog was a pitbull named Stubby.  He earned several medals during World War I and was even honored at the white house.  Weela another pit was dog hero of the Ken-L Ration of 1993.  She saved 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses, and a cat during a flood in South California.  And Bogart another pit saved a 4-year-old child from drowning in a swimming pool in Florida.  Dixie was inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame after she saved some children from a cottonmouth snake.  So you see not all pits are vicious and dangerous.  Many are heroes.  Many are so full of love it will touch your heart.  So don't judge these wonderful animals for WHAT they are but WHO they are.  There are bad people and there are bad dogs.  Not all people are bad and not all dogs are bad.  Show some love for these dogs.  You would be surprised how much love they will show you back.

I just felt the need to let people know what I came to know about one of the most misunderstood breeds out there.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and have an open mind and open heart.

Pitbulls
The reason pitbulls are used for fighting more than other dogs is because of their loyalty. Pitbulls, in the effort to please their owners, will do almost anything INCLUDING killing other dogs. These pitbulls are not aggressive or hateful by nature. They are just doing what they are taught to do.

Most of them that are taught to do so need rehabilitation, not death. They can be retrained just like criminals can be reintroduced to society. There are extreme cases, but there are people qualified out there to retrain even those.

I appreciate this post. While I have never personally owned my own pitbull (my husband brought a lab to the marriage and I already had to little scampers so three is enough for now!) my parents have about ten that they have rescued and rehabilitated and they are amazing, sweet, loving dogs!

All I can say is AMEN! Ya know when are people going to get it that it is all in how you raise them.... I guess never. Guess this is a battle that we will always be up against & we are very willing to take that challenge cuz we know the breed & we know how wonderful they are. I am and always will be a pitbull owner!!!! :)

Do you think the dog was crying out for attention? I have had many dogs in my life & the ones that I find are the ones that are more likely to turn are mixed breeds. I had a Samoyed mix breed that was raised from a puppy & was great till he reached a year and a half old & he started trying to bite us. We kept him and tried our hardest to change him, but no matter what he would at any given time out of the blue growl at us and try to bite us. So believe me it isn't just a breed issue.
Pitbulls
I do believe that very seldom sometimes you may run across a dog that gives you a problem, but you have to remember dogs are alot like people, and that there are by far alot less mean dogs than there are mean people that's for sure. I don't blame you for your bitterness toward the breed at all considering what you went through. I am curious did you know the background where she came from? How was the mother/father? Was this a reputable breeder? purebred? We have owned Samoyed, Chow Chow, Boxer, Pits, Black Mouth Cur, Laborador Retriever, and German Shepherd along with mixed breeds. Our experience is definitely the opposite of yours we had problems out of mixed breeds & not the pure bred. Having said that I know that every mixed breed isn't going to be trouble because just as people are different individuals so are dogs.

Hey SO glad to hear that! I tuned in to the Rachael Ray show also & she definitely loves the breed! I admit I was a skeptic at first cuz u hear so much, but after taking a chance & owning one & doing my research I LOVE pitbulls. My male pits don't hardly shed but now my female shed like I don't know what. I told the vet & he gave me a multivitamin to give her & that fixed that:) If you ever think about owning one I'd definitely do my homework & research the breeder & see the mom/dad's personalities. Also you could check in a reputable pitbull shelter & tell them your lifestyle and what you like & have them make a recommendation as to what dog would fit you. Older pitbulls from a shelter already have developed their lil personalities & the good shelters work with them day in and day out and know their likes & dislikes. I really like the Villalobos shelter & I think they are doing an outstanding job!
pitbulls
Lolabug is using phrases that some owners use to defend the breed simply because she obviously isn't narrow minded into thinking it is just a "breed issue". One thing about the pitbull breed that isn't in any other breed is that they are the #1 most abused dog in the U.S. and they are in serious need of good homes, and that is why I own them and will continue to own them. Instead of passing BSL around, they need to make people take dog ownership classes and get certified to help ensure they know how to take care of the dog, and frankly they ought to do this with all dogs and not just for pitbull owners. You can't let dogs raise themselves. Just like children need guidance and discipline so do dogs.
No pitbulls at all
When I said mainly on leashes, that means either on leashes, behind actual fences or behind electronic fences. I'm not sure where you think I live, but it's a small town in Upstate NY. Just because it's not hoity toity section with an association telling everyone what they can and can't have in and around their homes, it doesn't mean it's a slum. I'm sure that goes for almost everyone else who's posted that doesn't happen to live in an HOA.
Pitbulls personality
I totally sympathize with you. Sorry for you having to go through this. I really try to urge people when they get a pitbull to really get to know the mom/dad personalities & the breeder. Like I said in an earlier post my male pitbull that is inside is VERY dog aggressive BUT on the flip side he is the most gentle loving dog I have ever owned. He just doesn't like other animals, ESPECIALLY dogs. We have a fenced in yard though. If he come in contact with an unfamiliar dog he would definitely be in kill mode with his aggression. BUT I knew what I was getting myself into cuz he is Boudreaux bloodline & his mother was aggressive. His father was an absolute sweetheart to anything. I knew that aggression would probably surface up in my dog & it did at a year and a half old, but I wouldn't ever trade him up for anything in this world. He wouldn't dare turn on us, and I know that animal or dog aggression is not people aggression. I do have a great respect for what could happen if I let it happen, but I am responsible enough to know what my dogs like & don't like & I never have a problem out of them. They are definitely a vital part of our family & we love them dearly.
Education on Pitbulls
Know the FACTS: visit http://www.thetruthaboutpitbulls.com/
According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association 82.5% of the American Pitbull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average. Pitbulls have achieved the fourth highest passing rate of all 122 breeds tested.

Again, it can happen with any breed. Look at pitbulls..
.
OK, I must admit your dog is cute, but I'm still afraid of pitbulls.

I live in Upstate NY and I am an IC also.  I found the best way to go (cheapest) is to join a local Chamber of Commerce and buy a plan through them.   They can offer you the best price for health insurance at group rates.  You have to pay an annual fee to the Chamber so that's the only snag, and it pays to check out different Chambers because each one is different with some being cheaper than others.
need help with car insurance -
Have had State Farm since I was 16 - my house is also State Farm.  Just found out that almost 2 years ago my now 23-year-old daughter who still lives with me got a DUI.  State Farm is dropping us both.  My record is very good - one tiny accident (hit a pot hole and had to have new aluminum wheel) in over 13 years.  If she could live on her own on her salary I would make her - but she can't.  She doesn't drive my car - I think I have asked her to get gas for me on a couple of occasions - and when we go on vacation she might take a turn.  Any ideas?  What will insurance cost me now - any good companies to go with?  HELPPPPPP!!!
car insurance
I have a teenage daughter on my car insurance (thankfully neither of us have ever had an accident). If you're over 50, you can join AARP and then you're eligible for discount insurance through the Hartford. They saved me about $60.00 a month over any other insurance I had previously. If you meet the age requirements, look into it.

My son had a DUI and the ins was going to cancel us but they said if I only insured myself and my son showed proof of other ins that they'd keep me.  Could this work for you??  Just a thought...

PIP INSURANCE

Everyone who lives in Florida should be aware that the PIP insurance as we know it is soon to expire on 10/1/07.  Please go to the web site http://www.wpbf.com/index.html.  In the center, scroll down a little in the middle is a survery that asks Do you think personal injury protection (PIP) should be eliminated?  Please go on line and vote NO.  Send this email to everyone you know.  We want hundreds of votes.

Also, please send a letter to Governor Charlie Crist,o to Speaker Marco Rubio and Senate President Ken Pruitt.  You can find their email addresses on MyFlorida.com.  It is very important that they add this to their agenda on 6/12/07 for their special session.

Thanks for your help.

Insurance...
I agree with not being able to do that. I cannot get on my boyfriend's insurance because we aren't married but maybe it's state specific or company specific. If they are allowing gay/lesbian couples to ensure their significant others, then allowing ex-spouses or bf/gf to be insured by the other may be possible.
Insurance
Did you start a claim with the existing insurance? This happened to me, I had to do the cobra until my husband's new insurance kicked in, and they accepted the pregnancy not problem. I would call your current carrier and ask curiously. Some insurances dont have a problem as long as there was no gap without insureance. It so happened that the new insurance picked us up in just 30 days and we only paided the cobra for one month. I think when it comes to pregnancy, pre-existing does not apply, as long as there was no gap. Check it out. It was awhile ago for me.

It sounds like you're a great friend and neighbor!

Our neighbor never gave us their insurance information.  Our situation is a different because in addition to physical scars, our daughter has emotional scars from this dog bite that will take a long time to recover from.

I did some research on the dog bite law.  Sometimes insurance companies will cancel the homeowners policy if there is a dog bite on the property.  If they don't cancel it, the insurance premium will increase by a lot.  I think this is why they didn't try to go through the insurance company and thought we would accept this small check.

We believed them when they said they would take care of everything.  I guess we're just too nice!

but you do have insurance, it's the same
I didn't have a job, even though I do.  It's lying.  It's fraud.
Pet Insurance
I have some pet insurance. It is $17 a month for each dog. I figure, for $200 a year, if the dog lives to be 15 that would be a total of $3000 over the life of the dog. Which can be less than the cost of a single operation.

So I got the insurance. Andy had a minor surgery (removal of keratocanthoma) that came to $600, including $200 to have his teeth cleaned (not covered). After the deductible I got a check from the company for $300. I was pretty happy with that.

Does insurance cover any of the cost for implaints or dentures?

no insurance
I just got my teeth cleaned and you just call the office and tell them you are uninsured and they offer you a much cheaper rate, they charged me 75 bucks.
how did this become an insurance debate???
I posted simply to relieve some stress and anxiety...sheesh!  THANK YOU to the sincere posters expressing their sympathy...to the rest of y'all who turned MY post into a petty debate...!!!

Does anyone know where I can get family coverage?  I live in NY and I am taking an IC position.  Thanks
Homeowners insurance ? (sm)
I'm wondering if anyone has heard of this happening.  My niece spilled a small bit of bleach on her carpeting, about the size of a baseball.  The spot is in my brother and SILs living room.  There is also a small spot going up their stairs.  So, they called the place where they got their carpeting (about 3 years ago) to see if there was anyway they could fix it, and they informed them that the homeowners insurance would cover this and that since the carpeting is wall to wall, they should be able to get the entire house re-carpeted.  Does anyone know if homeowners will really pay to have your entire house re-carpeted just for a small bleach spot?  If so, I am going to call about our kitchen floor that has a large scratch on it from our table!!
Those *studies* were done by insurance --sm
companies who do not want to pay for the workers' comp cases and people that have gotten it. Just another *scam study* so they don't have to pay...just like the Katrina thing...where flooding caused by the hurricane is not covered because it is flooding.
My son's insurance would not pay for Nexium (sm)
but it would pay for Protonix (none of the others worked anymore - Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec).  He has GERD and Barrett's.  Anyway, he has been taking the Protonix for about 3 years now, and it is still working great!  He never had to go on the Nexium.  But I guess each person might be different.
Health insurance, so not sure.
My copay is the normal amount though, so it may not be too expensive. Our more expensive drugs will have a higher copay. You might see if your doctor has samples, just to see if it will work for you.
This is w/o health insurance either - sm
though ours is cheap (but very, very good). We only pay $140 a month for 4 of us. Of course just about every few months (if not every) something unexpected crops up too, car repair, etc.
insurance scam
this girl is looking for more than just medical expenses, trust me. Same thing, went to hospital and had x-rays, nothing wrong, then all of the sudden, couldn't hardly walk. How do I go about this with absolutely no one knowing it's me who is turning her in?
Insurance Scam
Usually, I am the type of person to pretty much tell you what's on my mind, but hubby doesn't really want me to say anything to her because he is good friends with her hubby and figures if I upset her, then he has to stand by her and that'll end their relationship. With me, it's what you see is what you get and I tell it like it is, maybe that's why this is bothering me so much. I always mind my own business too, but for some reason this is just bothering me more than I should allow. I am fearful of her even coming to our home, falling and getting hurt, then suing us; or even having her in my vehicles now because of what I am seeing - a woman I thought I knew but now see this dark side. She is figuring on going to court if they don't give her what she/lawyer wants and I already told her "not to count on me to testify in her behalf" because I totally am in disagreement with what she is doing". She said nothing to that comment. Hubby figures no way she'll get what she is expecting due to no surgery and it's just a strain, but I have seen people fall in sh__ and come out smelling like a rose, and she is one of them. I agree with other poster, she has turned in all claims to private insurance so maybe they'll check into that. They already asked to access past medical records and lawyer said no, that it has nothing to do with this, but that was early on right after accident. I am not afraid to say something to her, I am just not sure if I should, especially since my hubby really doesn't want me to. He cannot even stand her anymore and they used to be fairly close and tease each other as being bf and gf; that's how close we were. Also, secretary is my neighbor - go figure. We just leave that subject alone when together. I don't know what I am going to do, if anything, and I think you are right, I just need to address this issue directly with her because it's not in my nature to talk behind someone's back like this. I only have 1 face and do not particularly like myself for talking about her like this, though until now, I have only talked about it with my hubby. Thanks for all your advice.
Homeowner's insurance
Just a heads up depending on where you live in the NE. I live on Cape Cod and the insurance companies have almost all pulled out of this area because supposedly we are due for a big one some day. Even though I live 7 miles from the ocean, my company dropped me, and I had to go on the state-sponsored insurance program. My insurance is now $2000 on a $350,000 home with a $2500 deductible which does not include wind damage. That has a different deductible based on percentage of damage, maybe 1%? Can't remember right now. It's not that expensive compared to Florida, but we haven't even bit hit by a big hurricane. They just think we MIGHT be some day.
So you are saying you do not like insurance companies????
 Belly
Medicare is first insurance
Any of the insurance  plans I have seen only go to age 65 even if you are working.  They might work hand in hand with Medicare as your supplement but this is often expensive unles your employer continues to pay for it.   They will use Medicare as the primary  and your other insurance as the secondary.
We pay nothing on Hubs insurance
so then this is next year for me although retirement age not actually until 67 for me. Drats- was wanting to stay on his PPO, no cost to us and really good covering all. I have until March of next year to contact them now.
I have hepatitis C and my insurance is thru him (nm)

Are you sure you have the traditional insurance?

You won't believe the number of providers who try to balance-bill their contracted HMO patients.

Have you called your insurance company to see what you really are responsible for? If you have the old type of health insurance and the provider is a participating member, you may be responsible for 20% of the usual and customary (U&C) and not the entire billing charge.

How are you feeling? You sure don't need medical bills on your mind, all you should be thinking of is getting better. And, as the other poster stated, as long as you are making payments, you should be OK. Just don't let them talk you into a large monthly payment. Be honest with yourself and agree with what YOU can afford.

As for extra help, it depends on where you live. Are you the only person working in your household? You might not like the idea, but you might need assistance from your state.....this is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is your right as a US citizen. Go for it!

You have already gone through one nightmare, at this time you don't need a provider pressing you for more money then they already have received. Sure, they are due their money, but they are due their fair share. Hospitals and even some doctors overcharge so much! Why don't you request an itemized bill...then go over it with a fine tooth comb. You might just find some charges that were added to your bill by mistake.

Get well!

cobra insurance q

i have the option to have cobra insurance but have not done so.  As luck would have it now i am sick.  If i call tomorrow and pay for the cobra insurance will they cover me if I go to the doctor the next day? is there a waiting period or pre-existing condition clause? TIA

Did insurance cover this or how much?
nm
Yes, insurance covered it.
There was a pre-certification process, which included photographs. Ugh. It took about a month to get the approval. It was 100% covered through my insurance.
Do they have homeowners insurance? sm
That's who I would have filed the claim with.
are your taxes and insurance in with
the house note? By the time you have to pay for these out of pocket, will you realize much difference; I'd say keep paying your house notes and work on the other stuff; just my thinking. DO NOT TOUCH THE 401K; you will be horribly taxed on it as income. Actually, you guys are not that bad off debt-wise, know it's crowded, but you can survive for awhile yet and may another addition to the house would be feasible later; sounds charming, I love rock houses. If you have land, I'd say hold onto this deal, land's getting harder and harder to come by. For sure you don't have homeowner's agency to contend with. This will get better; just keep on keeping on. Good luck.
Insurance for Pets
I wonder if there is insurance that covers illness in addition to accidents. We had a dog who had Cushing's Disease and the treatment cost us a small fortune.
Health Insurance
I pay $240 a month for mom's (49yo) health insurance. This is for medical insurance plus a dental & vision discount program. She doesn't go to the doctor alot but when she does go there is always a remaining balance anywhere from $40-$80. Hospitalization through the insurance is set at $5,000 deductible.  I am just wondering does this sound reasonable or is there anything else cheaper with good coverage or same coverage????  I checked into BCBS but they are SO expensive.  Any input on this is greatly appreciated.
Insurance did pay some of mine
I have insurance through union but a small portion was paid, but most dental insurance not very good in the first place.
Insurance companies always get --
past medical records, no matter what insurance company you apply with. Once they get the records and the diagnosis is documented on your record, it is considered a preexisting condition.
You can do that, sure and then have your insurance cancel
You are supposed to disclose any prior diagnoses.
2 of the 3 were covered by insurance

We changed insurance plans back and forth between my husband and I during those years and 2 of the 3 did pay for it.  We paid for the second child's circ and it was only $110.  We really didn't have the money for it at the time, but since we had circ'ed the first one, we thought we should be consistent.

We also had both types of circs -- the first one had the Plastibell, which I did like better because I don't think it's painful at all.  The second 2 had the surgical circ, but it healed much nicer and quicker.

I think you are right that my kids probably wouldn't have had much of an issue with the teasing if we hadn't circ'ed them since it's become more common not to do the circs.  But after my husband's ordeal, he wanted it done and I didn't really care one way or another.  I think hygenically it will be easier for them when they're crusty old men. EWWW!

that is rediculous!!! Why have insurance if they won't pay??
getting them to pay for it :(
