I agree with maybe doing odd jobs, becoming a handyman.  People are repairing things instead of buying new, so this may be a good opportunity for him.

Also, the economic stimulus coming next year is supposed to include road construction, so there should be plenty of work for him then, but in the meantime, I would suggest doing odd jobs.
