My family (no kids) all voted to skip the gift-thing - sm

from now on. Most of us have tiny places where we can't squeeze one more object in without something else having to be thrown out. Most of us are on tight budgets (especially me!), and it gets harder every year to find a gift that is even worth mailing. So, without all the money-angst, and the horror of having to set foot in a Wal-Mart or Target during the Holidays or endure the the long lines at the Post Office, this year I'm actually looking forward to the Holidays for the first time in decades, instead of DREADING them. It can be a time of friendship & relaxation and enjoying the season, and not of shopping, credit card debt, and coming down with the flu.

best gift to me is having family and friends....nm

me too.. time with family is the best gift! -sm
I try not to stress otu about how much everyone gets or doesnt get.. I try to just get them each something "special" that they know came from my heart and the same with them. Last year my daughters went out and took pictures of themselves at a portrait studio.. that was the best gift because of the time and thought they put into it, not to mention how much I loved the picture. My husband got me a football jersey that had BRADY (for Tom Brady) on the back because my dog's name is brady. Its not how much you spend.. I love christmas because of the family and love it brings out in people. I understand people need budgets but sometimes thinking about that too much can take away from the meaning of all it... and I may have typos here lol and sorry for rambling its late!
11x14 matted studio family portrait - best gift ever!

I see the posts about the gift cards for supplies for the kids?
I was not aware that teachers use their *own* money for these things? How about something they can enjoy/you know maybe something they can actually enjoy? lol JMO
Need $3-$5 gift ideas for junior high age kids

I know it's not much to spend, but I didn't make the rules about this gift exchange.  Need something that would work for boys and girls.  I was hoping to be a little more creative than Mickey D's certificates.  Thanks for the ideas.  It's greatly appreciated.  :>)

Wish we had family to do that with. Have kids, but DH and I
xx
Same thing was done in my family
When my mother died, she was cremated and she and Dad had a double plot, so her ashes were placed in one of the plots. I had never seen that done until this happened with my mother.
See posts on here describing how kids better with their family but....
in this case does not seem to be the case. A baby running around with a dirty diaper until when changed had a red bottom. This is neglect on not only the father's part but the mother's as well. If the father not changing after a reminder, then the mother should to not have the red bottom. Yes, I will say again and again these are posts I see because a lot of mothers take this as a way to stay home with their children supposedly to bond and take good care of them, not wanting outside help and yet her post makes a case for neglect on the mother's side. I have worked and raised children and never had this ole woe is me type what will I do with a man who does not help and children at my knee. Two children or even more does not mean you have to stay in a meaninless relationship. I would work 4 jobs if I had to and have in the past in order to support my children, but then again oh my goodness, I worked away from the home and I had daycare. OMG!! My kids are grown, able to take care of themselves, contributing adults. Others should have it so good.
Our blended family was 6 kids-3 from 1 side, 2 from
We were all quite young when my parents married and then my sister was born, and never have we referred to each other as "step". My one brother and I are only 8 months apart and were in the same grade in school. People just thought we were friends and then got really confused when we had different last names LOL!

I guess it helped our situation some as there as not a biological parent on either side in the picture, one chose not to be involved (my real dad) and the other unfortunately had passed away.

We have a great family and my mom has 19 grandchildren and makes absolutely no differences in them.
I would have a family meeting with kids and husband.
Your husband should be able to have what he wants and he needs to voice this to his children. It will make it a lot easier for you when the time comes if everyone is on the same page.
I coach softball and my favorite gift was a sweatshift with photo of the team and all the kids signe
They signed it in some kind of indelible ink which is great because I actually wear it all the time. I also got a plaque that looks just like the shirt, which is nice to have because I'm sure I'll wear out the sweatshirt. I love them and feel proud when I wear the shirt. We were champs of the league and the district and for a couple months after the season we were all kind of local celebrities! I played at a high level myself traveling all over Italy and Japan, but coaching this group was the best experience of my athletic career.
I think you are doing the best thing for your kids
My youngest is now 21, but I was much the same kind of mother you are. I hated video games from the first time they came out and my boys NEVER had any of them. We played lots of board games, they had a few little computer games, but none of the Nintendos or any of that stuff. They built stuff with Legos, played with each other, played outside in the yard and probably their favorite things were large cardboard boxes and their imaginations.

My kids have grown up to be happy, healthy and well-adjusted, much more so than their couch-potato, gamer peers.

So hang in there!

Get a high tech 3-D, something or ultrasound, but skip the sadomasochistic Helga house of pain lifting your pectoral muscle off of your rib cage by flattening it in a compression device, then calling you back for a followup because you screamed during the exam and ruined the image....

I told my kids the same thing

One left at 18 because I charged him $10 a week to stay here. I figured they had to learn life wasn't a free ride.  I had taught them how to cook, do laundry, etc. The other left at 25 after spending 4 years in the military. Both came back for a while after that at 20 and 27, but if they balked at paying any "boarding fees" told them if they didn't like the rules "there was the door". They did leave after they got their feet on the ground and had decent jobs. Never felt guilty about it.

If it was today, I'd let them stay here forever if they had to, but one is doing okay. The eldest has been laid off since last May and going through bankruptcy and divorce, but hasn't asked to move back home yet. He could if he would ask, but I doubt he will after living on his own for over 10 years.

I go along with the veggies and dip. Skip the crax

Skip the bread, which is where the carbs are -
Make the rest into a salad to eat with the soup! :-)
Yes, it helps a lot....I can even skip a day occasionally....lol nm

Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

LOL! Maybe that will get him voted off :)

I voted for Amy as well. nm

I voted, too! :)...............n/m

It absolutely is because he voted.....
In my small town, everytime you vote, you can pretty much guarantee you will be called for jury duty within the next year! Maybe it has something to do with smaller towns.....Merry Christmas!
I voted for many different people, but
none of those who made it into the bottom 3, so at least that seemed to work, LOL.

I'm fed up with AI. Gina should not have been voted off. This whole
of the voting thing. If they're going to continue AI in the future, then they need to stop allowing the public to vote because the public, thanks to jerks like Howard Stern, has made a mockery of the show.  These contestants worked hard to get where they're at and the good ones are the victims.  It's just not fair.
well they voted for GW, nuff said
them being morons.
I think that Chris will be voted off.
Adam is definitely the best.
I really think that Allison is very good.
And Danny as well.

These group, IMO, is the best EVER.

I hope that Allison will stay. She is so humble and modest, really nice and very talented, just 17 years old.
Alana voted off tonight and
I am SO glad. She was a little snit, making snide remark to Simon as he told her she ran out of steam. Well, she did, hello! Do these people not understand going against the judges will not work for you? Now there is another think she has it when she doesn't that needs to hit the door just anytime, Antonella.

I voted several times each for my 3 favorites.
I mean, can you imagine all the money they have made over the years.
They all are bad this year in my opinion. I have not voted once at all. nm

to the officers of my Civil War Round Table.  If I read the map correctly, ya'll are just down the road from the Andersonville National Historic Site.  I hope they will either put it out as an E-mail broadcast to the membership or put a blurb in our newsletter.  Our big auction to raise funds for battlefield preservation is Friday.  I've signed up to make an announcement there.  We may be up north, but we do have a contingent of loyal Confederates (smile) and some experience with tornados.

some information on American Idol and why the good singers voted off
I have just read this this morning on a news channel. Not flattering but really says it like it is, apparently. The channel says the really good ones, i.e. Malinda and LaKisha got the boot because they said Malinda looked matronly and LaKisha was heavy-set and had gap-toothed appearance. Even though these were the best, now days in order to be bankable and sellable, talent is not what is the selling point, people want someone like Blake who has the little girls swooning and Jordin who is easy on the eyes. It says if you are female singer, you'd better be sexy. The above was what was printed in the article and I thought this said it all.

Big difference between family values and family jewels, eh? lol
LOL. I love this show. I think Gene and Shannon and her sister are a riot! What characters. It really is amazing to me the kids seem so laid back and so normal. They seem like great kids.
Does your family still do the early Sunday dinner w/family?

Happiness is a heart thing; pleasure is a head thing.nm

Nope, no kids with him, all of our kids are 20 and over.

I would think that some of the $12,000 A YEAR he paid in support for over 9 years should have been enough to save some for college. He paid his dues so to speak, always paid the support on time, had insurance for them, etc. He told them straight up to pay for their own college. Is there something wrong with that?

What's your best gift
Dh totally outdid himself this year by getting me a Kodak Easy Share digital camera and printing dock, and a new cordless phone with answering machine so he can leave me messages when he needs to.
Well, we know you were definitely given one gift....
stupidity.

LOL
re: gift
I don't think there would be anything wrong with giving them a nice gift! So what if they're distantly related to you! You enjoyed their company and you could write that in whatever card you send with the gift. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to bless someone with a gift because they touched your heart!

God bless!
Gift

What a wonderful, thoughtful gift. It will mean so much to them.

Yes it's a gift tax...
And in our state, its 39% tax. Unfair, plain and simple...
I know these get old, but have gift ?
My stepdad's mother is in a small nursing home.  I have called and spoken with the owner about getting some gifts for the residents who maybe don't have family.  Those gifts I can figure out, but I wanted to get the owner of this facility a small gift.  She is an absolute angel with these people, most of whom have Alzheimer's.  I don't know anything else about her really and I wanted to stay away from gift cards only because I am absolutely broke!  Any ideas for something small to show my appreciation?
