My son was 15 when he had one ear pierced.

And I took him myself and paid for the piercing. In fact, it was my suggestion. He has just one ear pierced and wears one small post earring nearly all the time. His hair is just a tad long, just over his collar at the moment, which is as long as he can get away with at his Catholic high school.
As for his being a n'er-do-well, hmmm, let's see... He's graduating from h.s. at the top of his class, was accepted at some very well respected universities to study engineering, has been offered over $50,000 in scholarships so far, and has just earned his Eagle Scout rank. Over the years, a few old fuddy-duddies have commented on what they call his "stupid" earring. But my son is always polite and never comes back with any remark. In fact, when my son went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for a 100-mile backpacking trip, his scout leader berated him for the earring, telling him that he looked like a girl and no gays were allowed in scouting. What a nice display from a guy wearing short-shorts, knee socks and a scarf around his neck! This happened in the airport as they were getting ready to leave. My son took the earring out and simply said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to wear the earring." My first impulse would have been to shout like a crazy person at that leader, but my son set a better example for me. I simply took the earring when he handed it to me and left the matter up to my son. When they returned, the very same adult leader told me what a fine young man my son was. I suppose he forgot about the tiny hole in his earlobe that signified a trouble-maker!

ears pierced?

Say what you want, but ask yourself how that'll be working for him when he's out in the real world trying to get a decent job?

I personally think it looks strange for a man to wear jewelry. The Tiffany Reference book specifically says a man should only wear a watch and wedding band, if applicable.

Having a conversation like this with a 9YO makes me just shudder.

pierced ears
My son was the same as as yours when he asked to get his ears pierced. He wanted both of them pierced, so we compromised on one. He wears a very small green birthstone and sometimes a very small hoop and takes very good care of it. I felt this was not a big deal. There are much bigger issues to worry about. An ear piercing, in my opinion, is not one of them.
My husband has 1 of his ears pierced
and he is just about the sexiest thing I have ever ran across! When we first started going together he had an earring- somewhere over the years it is not there and I told him the other day want him to get another 1- he is 1 heck of a man and a manly 1 at that!
World's Most Pierced Woman
The world's most pierced woman, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, has added to her collection with a 6,005th piercing, the U.K.'s Telegraph reported.

Elaine Davidson, of Edinburgh, Scotland, made the Guinness World Record official in 2000 when she had a mere 462 piercings — 192 of which were in her face.

Nine years later, the Brazilian-born nurse has thousands of piercings including more than 1,500 that she says are "internal."

Surprisingly, Davidson says she doesn't like getting pierced.

"To break the record you have to get to a high level," she told the Telegraph. "I wanted to break the record. My family [doesn't] even like tattoos or piercings. But I am happy. I decided to change myself and be me."

Excessive piercing can be dangerous, according to medical experts. In addition to the risk of infection in and around the area of the piercings, people who are well-pierced are considered at high risk for blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis and HIV, which can be spread by reusing needles.
