Oh yes...(sm)

I'm sorry you had to hear that garbage.  The comments I'm talking about are the ones that come from people that care.  My dad and brother spent years of their life calling me "chunk" and laughing about their seething cleverness starting when I was a teenager.  I wasn't that fat--overweight at best at 140-165 pounds throughout high school--but they got their kicks out of it anyway.  My nickname from my parents all throughout childhood was "beef."

I could say I showed them (my brother, my father, and my mother are all obese), but I think moving on with my life was the best thing I could do.  My dad tells me now that I need some bacon.  My mother, surprisingly, is the only person who has been supportive of my weight loss without a hint of ever saying, "You know, maybe you should stop and gain some back..."

I agree with you--it usually does not do a whole lot of good to tell a fat person that he or she is fat.  I don't know any fat people that are not aware of their girth.  It is not up to a healthcare professional, a family member, or some person on the street to inform a fat person what they need to do to be not fat anymore.  Eating for the obese is so much more than just eating.  There's a fix from food and sometimes underlying emotional things.

Ugh.  I could go on forever.
