Bananas Foster
See link for recipe. You don't have to set it on fire for it to be good!
French toast sm
I always made my own either with Texas toast or regular, but I happened upon some Murray's French Toast sticks at Wal-Mart one Mother's Day and bought it just because there was a time frame debate and used it in a pinch since it was already made, etc. It went over better than my own and saved me a big mess and have used these sticks from then on, just pop them in a flat pan and then when they go, open another box and pop them in the oven when I see the dish getting empty. Just a thought. Several different kinds of juice available always helps as well, of course. Sounds like fun! Bacon is another big hit, even though it's not healthy, the guys really go for it and you can make it ahead. Time is the only problem, with people arriving at different times, some things have to be precooked.
Baked French Toast
I made this Thanksgiving weekend for breakfast. You start it the night before so it can sit overnight in the fridge. It is so simple and quick, and is absolutely delicious! Everyone loved it!
Note: I sprinkled cinnamon on the top just before baking. Can't have French Toast without cinnamon!

BAKED FRENCH TOAST
Ingredients:
8 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
8 slices of 3/4 inch thick Italian bread, cut in half.
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions:
Mix eggs, milk, brown sugar and vanilla. Pour half of the mixture in the bottom of a 13 X 9 pan. Lay the bread out in the pay and pour the rest of the mixture on top. Flip the bread over so that it's all coated. Cover and let sit in the fridge overnight.

Melt butter in a second 13 x 9 inch pan. Stir the brown sugar and maple syrup into the butter. Move your soaked bread into the pan with the butter mixture. Cook at 350 for 30-45 minutes, depending on desired brownness.
Baked French Toast
This is a delicious, easy, make ahead breakfast and just the smell alone is heaven!

Ingredients:
8 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
8 slices of 3/4 inch thick Italian bread, cut in half.
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar

**I added a lot of cinnamon to the egg mixture. Can't have French toast w/o cinnamon!

Rachel Ray had the cutest looking french toast cups yesterday. sm
She soaked the bread in eggs, milk, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon mixture and put the bread into a muffin pan so that they made a little cup (you cut a slit in the bread and it forms a cup when put in the muffin hole). Baked them and then filled them with fruit and topped with maple syrup and bacon pieces. Looked really good. I am going to try that this year!
French toast using texas test bar-b-que bread. Yummy. Potato casserole is sm
the best, too!
southern style potatoes frozen (ore-ida)
1 can cream of chicken soap
8 ounces sour cream
1 stick butter
1 package mild cheddar cheest
mix all ingredients and bake for 45 minutes

Then if you want to add a meat such as ham or bacon you can do that.
Buzz clippers...
I cut my own hair sometimes even! No more cotton candy on my head, just silver lining, LOL!
It is probably to make the buzz more potent - sm
You get a buzz or a slight high from cigs, granted if you smoke on a regular basis I doubt you do, but someone who only smokes now and then, they would and the removal of the filter makes it more so. I have a retired friend who smokes nothing but nonfilter, but this is a 3-pack a day guy, which if the cigs don't kill him the liquor will. He likes the stronger cigs hence no filter. As suggested below, there could be pot in the cig and not tobacco, a smell test should tell you what is what. Either way if she is under 18 how is she getting them, it is illegal to purchase cigs if you are under 18, granted as long as you have a friend 18 you can easily get around that, but it does make it slightly harder. ---Get one of those anti-smoking pamplets from your doctor (just saw some at my local health clinic) and discuss it with her, the fact she will get addicted to nicotine, stronger risk of lung cancer and emphysema in the future if she keeps it up, stinking all the time, yellow teeth, the expense of the habit, etc. Good luck.
Give your local pharmacist a buzz.
I have some liquid morphine leftover from when my mother was dying and I've kept it for sentimental reasons if nothing else...oh going on 8 years now.  I asked the pharmacist about it and he said that I should chuck it because it is 100% lethal now because of age.  So, yeah, just give them a call...they love answering questions like that!
How Much Are Bananas?
Last week, bananas were 62 cents per  pound.  I refused to pay that.  This week they are down to 48 cents, so I grabbed a bunch.  I had never seen bananas so expensive.  Of course, bananas are not the only thing going too high, but I just noticed them more, I guess.   Are there times when you tell yourself, I can get by without this.  I refuse to pay that much?
omg I LOVE the bananas!!!
when my baby was a baby. YUM
I do one better-PB, Jelly, and bananas (nm)

A toast from me too.
Never heard of doing this, will have to try, always so informative you are!
Have you thought that perhaps she is a foster mom or....sm
has taken in kids of relatives that would be in foster care if she didn't take them in? Depending on the situation for the kids, many foster parents do receive food stamps to cover the cost of food for small children.

As a foster parent I don't receive this in my state as I take in older kids; however, my foster kids have always had Medicaid. Several times I've had people make comments from people at the doctors office waiting room or pharmacy about having Medicaid and yet dressing nicely or driving a SUV, but then I tell them these are foster kids without parents and they back down when they realize that I'm not someone ripping off the system.

Any foster parents out there?

Anything that isn't premade or toast

I don't cook.

help, foster care

Would someone please help me with this new situation?  I welcome any and all advice.  Today, Sunday, my DH and I will be taking in his 16-1/2-month-old great-nephew for an indefinite period of time.  DH's niece is a drug addict, supposedly bipolar - and I use that term lightly - an all around horrendous parent.  She currently is 29 yrs. old, has 4 kids, oldest is 12 and has lived with niece's mother since she was 5, who recently adopted her.  Others are 2-3/4 yrs, 16-1/2 mos and newest is 11 days old.  We have always had the two youngest on weekends and whenever, kind of like surrogate grandparents for them.  I drew the line at this last one.  I don't want the work involved with a newborn anymore.  Anyway, 4 kids, 3 fathers, 3 biracial kids, new baby tested positive for marijuana at birth.  Just found out 16-month-old did too.

DCFS stepped in on Thursday, 12/27/07, and niece's mother accepted responsibility for all 3 in order to keep them from being sent off to the Chicago area to foster care.  This is a good 4 hours from us.  The niece, her ex-husband, her current boyfriend and current boyfriend's mother are not allowed to be alone with the kids, nor are they allowed to have the kids at their homes until after a court hearing in 2-4 weeks - no date has been set.  This is due to drug history.  Police have been watching their house for a while and have determined it is a crack house.

Niece's mom called me for help.  I have agreed to take one child.  I prefer the 16-month-old since he has some developmental delay due to drugs and neglect.  I think we can work with him and see some improvement.   She will keep the 2-3/4-year-old and is looking for someone to take the baby.

Do I call DSFS this week and find out what to do legally about this?  Do I offer to testify against niece (these kids are horribly neglected)?  Do I keep my mouth shut and let it play out?  I'm really in a bind here.  I want to do what is best for these kids.  It is breaking my heart to see them so neglected, but would also kill me if they get sent off somewhere.  The two toddlers love their mommy and don't even know other kids don't live like this.

Also, how do I work with a toddler underfoot?  I can't afford to put him in day care, as closest would be 25 mile trip and about 100.00 a week I think.

Please respond if you have any experience in this area.  Thanks.

foster care

I refuse to get mean and ugly on this board, so will try to explain instead.
We live in a very small rural community. Even though race should not play a part, in this area it does. There are still many narrow minded people, including those in the DHS and the court system. White, drug addicted women who repeatedly live with unemployed, drug addicted or alcoholic black men and have illegimate babies by each one, are looked down on. They live on $600.00 a month plus Medicaid and Food Stamps, sometimes up to 5 or 6 brothers living with them.

Is it right for the babies? No. It is just a fact of life in some places. The reason they would be sent to Chicago is so they would have a chance at a better life, where biracial children are accepted as the norm.

I don't have a problem with the kids. They are like my own. I have been feeding and clothing them, along with a friend of mine who also frequents this board, since the 2-3/4-year-old was born. Do I really want to raise a baby to adulthood. Not really. Only because I don't think I am young enough or healthy enough to give him the life he deserves. I will do the best I possibly can and get every possible assistance I can to help with his developmental delay, but I would rather his mother get her act together and be a parent. That will never happen. She is almost 30 and listens to no one's advice. At any rate, DCFS may persuade the court to keep the kids together and sent them far away. The only thing I can pray for if that happens is that they get a great set of parents and have a wonderful life. It will break my heart, but would be worth it.

The reason I do not want the newborn is two-fold. She tested positive for drugs at birth. I have no idea what problems may come up with that. I definitely don't think I can do the late night, teething thing again on a full time basis. It was hard enough with the other two. I feel badly for not wanting her, but she has many, many more relatives on her father's side, some of which should help. However, I don't know their situations either.

I'm sorry your post sounded so mean spirited. I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and tell myself you didn't mean it the way I took it.
One of our dogs loves all fruits, especially bananas....sm
, watermelon and cantaloupe. She literally sits in the kitchen when you're cutting the latter 2 and cries until she gets some.
Forgot to add - slice bananas for the layers
xx
No, unless of course the foster kids of choice
include the more difficult ones because a lot more money is paid monthly for them. I knew of a couple who took in only the more difficult kids, a bunch at a time and made a killing off these kids, now well off and retired and enjoying live and want nothing to do with any of them. Never did really. Sad.
Last week, bananas were on sale for 39 cents per pound.

Just got a foster dog from a local rescue group
Very sweet, but has a bad cough that's been going on for over a week. I've been asking the rescue group if I can take him in to the vet, but they keep saying no. I don't have a job, so I don't have the money to do it myself (I do have the time). I'm certain the rescue group is concerned about money, but this seems unfair to me and the dog. For all I know he could have any number of things wrong. They are telling me it's a cold, and to just wait until he's better before he goes in to be neutered.

What's the right thing to do? What should I tell the group's organizer?

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Sadly they would probably be better off in the foster care system.

Banana Pudding made with bananas and vanilla wafers

2 lg packages (or 4 small packages) INSTANT Vanilla pudding

3-1/3 cup cold milk

12 oz Cool Whip

1 cup sour cream

5-6 ripe bananas

1 box vanilla wafers

Mix pudding and milk until it starts to thicken.  Gently stir in sour cream and Cool Whip.  Mix well.  In large dish or bowl put layer of vanilla wafers, layer of pudding, and layer of bananas, repeat layers.  I ended up with enough pudding to put another layer on top of the bananas.  Crush some vanilla wafers or just use crumbs in the box to garnish the top.  Let it chill before serving.  Delicious!!

Sounds like Cedric is in a loving foster home!
Where do you live - that path looks gorgeous!

French Press..
I have never personally had one, but a physician I worked for did and he would grind his own beans every morning and make his own coffee in it, rather than just the regular stuff we drank. I believe I tasted it once and it was very good, stronger than the regular coffee but of course that may depend on the type of beans you grind, etc. He was a coffee-fanitic!
french press
Love mine! I started with a glass one but then found a thermal one which will keep the coffee hot longer.
RVSP is French for
Respond if you please (respondevous si vou ple)not positive of my spelling here)!

That doesn't mean 'respond if it pleases you' it means kindly respond either way.

As to the rudeness, it could possibly be ignorance/indifference - each generation seems to be less well-mannered.
Has anyone used a French press coffee maker? sm
if so, did you like it or dislike it?  Thanks!
I doubt this explanation....roux is french

Roux in French means to cook equal amounts of butter/flour together to make/thicken sauces.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roux

However, medically speaking here's a descript. of what name means/comes from:

The name (Roux-en-Y) comes from the restructuring of the small intestine to form a Y-shaped structure. One arm of the Y carries digestive juices and the other carries food. The two arms come together farther down the intestine where digested food can be absorbed.

What did you have for breakfast?

This morning my 2 boyz came in off of third shift together @ 7 am(rare occasion) and wanted to know if I would consider helping them with breakfast.  They made their suggesttion and I told them to go the the super WalMart and get the ingredients....Well, they're both young working men and can pick up the tab!

Shrimp gumbo (from scratch), crab cakes (frozen) and an extra bag of what appeared to be tiger shrimp on steroids!  Yummy!

Just to see them yuckin' it up, pokin' each other, playin' in the kitchen really did my heart good.

Mind you, last night's dinner was boiled chicken backs, pinto beans with jowl meat, turnip greens and hot water cornbread ....So, don't be impressed by this morning's fare....It's very rare.    Enjoy every moment you can with your kids   Cat

Breakfast
How about Belgian waffels with whip cream and fruit topping and an omlet bar?  Nothing fancy, just some different veggies and meats with cheese.  Set up a couple of pans and let the kids chose what they want.  You can really prep all this in the evening and be ready for them when they return.  Get paper plates and cups and have a great time.  My son went to his prom and a few others over the years so we have done a couple of different things.  If you have not been to one yet and are picking up the limo at another kid's house, ask what the situation will be.  I went to drop off and take some pics one time and when I got there all of the adults were wearing formal wear and having a party.  I, of course, had not even taken a shower that day.  Apparently I was sent an e-mail about the event, but it went into my junk mail.  I felt like a real rube, but it was still a fun event.
I don't eat breakfast - never have been able to
Ever since I was in grammar school I have never been able to eat breakfast. My parents always made me eat and I'd get sick. Now I get up at 8am, DH doesn't get up til 11AM (on different work schedules), so I don't eat anything. Around 11AM we have our "breakfast" - coffee and whatever it doesn't take me any time to make. I do like life cereal a lot, and sometimes we'll have a bagel or toast. Other times I take some frozen strawberries and blueberries and throw them in the blender with some water and we have a fruit drink. My sister tells me I'm boring and bland. HA HA
What do you eat for breakfast?

Do you change it up, or always eat the same thing?

Myself, for years and years and years... I eat a bowl of cheerios!  Sometimes I run out and have to have a bagel with peanut butter or something.

But I still love cheerios after all this time :)

Maybe after a night out and not waking up until 11 or so, we will go eat a big restaurant breakfast of omelets/toast/hash browns, but that's like once a month.

Just curious cause I'm getting hungry and was wondering what everyone else does

Have a great Friday!!!!

Is this the breakfast one?
With eggs and sausage? My mom and sister make that one all the time for morning things. Kids especially love it.
No not the breakfast one. It is
1 bag of thawed hashbrowns (I use the cubed, my kids don't like the shredded hashbrowns)
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 stick butter
salt and pepper
2 cups shredded cheese (I use sharp cheddar).
Crushed corn flakes

Melt butter, reserve about 1/4 cup. Mix everything together except corn flakes and reserved butter.

Spread crushed corn flakes over top, pour remaining butter over and back at 350 for 1 hour.

It is a great side dish, goes with anything.
I've been told I have bats in my attic...and that I'm a french fry short of a happy meal, too!

Maybe look for a bed and breakfast place in that...
area. Chamber of Commerce might be able to help you.
try eating something for breakfast - even if just
toast - to get your metabolism going. Eat a bigger meal at lunch and a smaller meal at dinner. Do you find yourself eating more less-healthy foods than before? If you get hungry, drink 8 ounces of water before you eat to help fill you up. Eating more in the evening means you aren't getting a chance to work off those calories. Good luck.
Oh, forgot about breakfast here
I had some yogart and some fruit. I just do not know about these foods this person is talking about.
Mmmm...breakfast!
Bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast, orange juice, and coffee.

That reminds me--the treadmill is beckoning. ;-)
