My sister in law is a teacher in another district and she told me that teachers do this because they always have so many kids every year who are sent to school with NO supplies so, yes, you are supplying other students.
Then, at the end of the year, whatever is leftover goes not to the kids who actually brought the supplies but to the kids who did NOT bring supplies.
Oh... one year, when I refused to send all of the extra stuff, first report card of the year had a note about lack of participation with a side note about not bringing all of the supplies on the list.
That was a very tense school year. My daughter had enough supplies for herself and that's all I was concerned about. I refused to supply the whole grade.
