The key is where, when and how often

If he calls her up to discuss every little thing that happens in his life, that's excessive - he probably still cares a little too much about her to be in a completely committed relationship with somebody else.

But if it's just a casual, once-in-a-while, friendly thing, then I would say - JMHO - that it's probably harmless, and in fact it shows a certain amount of maturity on his part.

If you are seriously involved and are contemplating marriage, I would advise some premarital counseling to get these issues out in the open in a neutral and nuturing environment so you can set your mind at ease before you walk down the aisle.
