This is what I do...

I set it down in the trash can over whatever is in there, let it set for a few seconds, maybe 10 and when I pick it up no real dust. I figure if there's lots in the trash can then that's still more than what was on my carpet.

I like that I can see it picking up the dust and whatever and I go over and over the area where I can still see stuff coming thru the canister.
