I like the challenge, both the physical and the mental. I also like seeing things that can't be reached by car. I like being alone. I like when the stars look so close that I could reach right up and touch them. I like seeing bears! I really do! I like the way owls sound in the middle of the night when they call to each other. I like that backpackers are an absolute minority of people, because I like being different. Very few people can do what I do. I also teach other people how to camp, and I love watching them realize how accomplished they are. It's more than bugs, dirt, and pooping in the woods.
But don't get me wrong! I love those full-blown luxury vacations, too. I spent a few days at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia in January, and I can't tell you how fantastic that was! But, I like that I can go to either extreme and feel completely wonderful.
