I would have said that she's probably right about it being her upbringing, but if she shows sympathy to her dog, who knows? I don't have a psychology degree, but it sounds to me like she's been hurt very badly and built up a wall that a battering ram couldn't penetrate. I don't know that I could be close friends with someone like that because you're giving and not getting. Did you ever discuss it with her, or is it too sensitive? Anyway, I don't have her personality flaw, and my sympathy goes out to you. I hope your troubles resolve soon.
