UMass Amherst was one of the univ. my son applied to. We do not live in MA, but I could not believe they were only offering $5,000 in aid for freshman year. Their offer was the lowest of the three schools my son was considering. I too called UMass at the time, pretty much got the same response. If you live in MA and apply there, you get a good deal.

About scholarships: If your child receives them for freshman year, do you need to re-apply for those same scholarships every year after that?

Go UMass !!!

UMass Amherst
One thing about UMass Amherst you should be aware of. Many kids have to go more than 4 years because classes needed to graduate are not always available or fill up too quickly. I live in Mass., and hear this complaint all the time. Had 3 nieces/nephews go there over the past 15 years and all complained of the same thing, but it has gotten worse over the years.

Currently know a freshman going there, and because she was in last group for orientation and class sign-up, she is taking mostly classes she is not interested in but that was all that was left.

My high school senior daughter was offered full tuition to UMass because of her scores on a standardized test that the high schoolers have to take here in Mass. However, it only covered tuition not room/board, fees, books, etc., which are about 4 times more than the tuition.

She wants to go to an art college in NYC and has signed up on FastWeb.com. This site searches for scholarships you would qualify for depending on major, interest, etc. She applies for at least 2 a week. Check it out.
UMASS VS APPALACHIAN STATE sm

Anyone have any connection to these two teams.  My daughter is on the UMASS marching band and will be going to Tennessee for the championship game.
