My parents did this and I think it involved either sanding or priming, maybe both but it looks fabulous. Just ask at your local pain store - they should be able to tell you how to do it properly.

  - There's a special coating you need to use first to fill in the grooves. Don't - just use joint compound as it "sinks" later
