The "shock" collars are programmable so just set to level that gets his attention, not make his fur stand on end.  Also, he wiil VERY quickly realize what is going on and stop the barking, so he will not be "hurt" at all.  I think the sensation suprises them more than hurts.  I have used them for years, even on Yorkies, becuase I refuse to have my dogs be nuisance to my neightbors.  Btw, do get the recharble kind, not the battery kind as they take special battery that is not cheap.
