If you have a securely fenced in yard and he can't get out and get ran over or lost sure you could keep him out. If it gets freezing you may want to let him in your laundry area in a cage or something but also you could put him a insulated dog house out there and even when it is real cold my friend bought her dog a heating pad you put in the dog house that is made for outside and you plug it in your house and she said she got in the house to make sure it worked. She said it was nice and cozy in there. So I think if he is taken good care of he will be fine. My neighbor down the road has a Chihauhua (I think that may be spelled right) who stays outside. He is fine. I personally like my inside dogs but considering your sons allergies outside would be fine.
