we have an lcd hi-def, but we have satellite programming, but let me say this we could not be happier. alot of the local channels also broadcast in hi-def, so you might get hi-def in the local channels and the picture is awesome. we find that the picture is great even in just plain analog, but we also have ours hooked up with monster cables, which are the best cable to hook up with aside from the hdmi hookup. i am forced to know about this because of my husband, he is the one who keeps atop of all of this stuff. i can understand not paying for hi-def channels. but you might be able to get a hi-def box for just a few dollars extra a month, usually it really is not that expensive, but like i said before depending on where you live the local channels usually broadcast in hi-def (it would say so in the corner of the screen if it is).

hope this is helpful

enjoy!!
