well-running is only a teeny portion of my fitness. I compete in fitness competitons -suggestions-

My running with Walter is more for him than me... we do a 4-mile route during the week and sometimes 8-10 trail run on the weekends.  I'm kind of extreme.  I also do my own sprint work at the college track - they have an awesome rubber track and most of the high schools around here also have those.  And the football fields are turf... not grass - the fake turf?  Those are excellent for running.  I don't like treadmills either!  It feels even worse than pounding on the street!.  I use them for incline walking sometimes.  But the elliptical machines are great for the knees and feet.  Running is very therapeutic for me, obviously for my dog too!

But health wise, running is pretty hard on the joints, so I'd keep it to a 3-4 times a week at most, cross training with weight training and some other cardio activity, walking, etc.

I think those programs like you did, running programs, triathlon programs, especially the ones that are specific for women are fantastic.. and Running Magazine and Runner's World mag & their online forum are great places to get some advice- kinda like here.

My fitness helps me in all parts of my life. It keeps my energy up for MT work, for my family, is kind of my version of therapy.

Yourself Fitness

Started using tapes when Jane Fonda's Workout came out and various DVDs since.  Hands down the BEST has been Yourself Fitness.  It is a different workout every single time, is customized to your current fitness level, and you can focus on different areas (weight loss, cardio, etc.) each time.  My husband has his own profile on my CD and also loves it!!  Check it out, ladies!

How to compete with a loving doting MIL.

I am jealous of MIL and Dh relationship.  There, I admitted it.  It was a huge red flag when we were dating but I ignored it.   To start at the beginning I was jeolous.  I wished now I would have listed  but I didn’t I married him.  Lived here in an appointment but he really considered his home with mommy who was 88 miles away.  He would go every weekend leaving me here alone.  I thought well, he is not married to me or anything I guess he is taking care of responsibility.  He seemed obsessed on the family farm (70 acres) and getting that started.  He and his mommy were working side by side to get “the place” fixed up.  Occasionally, his friend and his wife would invite them camping so he and mommy would take a break with his buddies and camp.  Not so intelligent me was sitting at home, alone thinking one of these days he will figure out what a wonderful person I am and he won’t have to cling to mommy so much.  Boy was I ever wrong.  He took my virginity and that made me want to cling to him tighter.  I shamelessly chased him.  Finally I told him that if he wasn’t going to marry me, I was leaving.  He said okay, lets do it.  Well we had a rush engagement.  DH hated the idea of a wedding he had already been through that once. (This was his second marriage).  He was not very cooperative and kind of rude but I did get my wedding.  At some points in our courtship I thought it was sweet how he doted on his mommy I just wished I saw how dysfunctional it really was.  I think my first clue should have been when he was late for our second date because mommy called him bawling because she and her brother got into a fight.

Anyway, it was so hard to keep MIL out of our business.  MIL balanced our check books, dh would take me and MIL out of a drive, all outings included MIL.  I told him that I think we should be taking care of our financial bus and dh said “no, mom knows how to do it and besides if I take that from her she won’t feel wanted. “  I asked, who did you marry, me or mommy.  Well MIL is not in our finances anymore.  She did used to go through our mail. I asked her if she was going to be a meddling MIL and she got mad and told DH and dh jumped my butt saying she is only trying to help and a few cuss words. (when the cussing started, I turned out). MIL was upset and she was going to take us to court. I guess she thinks she has rights to his money just like a wife would or more so.  They did have bank accounts together, cc together.

Any, I cannot write a book.  Just a long story short, I try to put up boundaries and I am the villain. MIL is not a meddler, she is trying to help, she is only being a loving, doting,  graaaadmommeeee.  To get along, I  try to think of her as a break from the kids but the way she interacts with my children sends chills down my spine.  First she would say that is her baby, she didn’t want her baby doing this or that.  She did not want her baby to get sick so I couldn’t  take her outside. She wants to sleep in their room so she can take care of them, she would take my oldest dd in another room and shut the door and undress.  She wanted to take her to the public restroom, (It is like she thinks, DH child is her responsibility, I am just womb donor. It was driving me stir crazy.  She and dh would buddy up on our outings and leave me feeling like a third wheel. And with DD, it was like she, DH and my child were just one big happy family.  Gag. One time dh ask her if she wanted another baby, she said “I love babies.”  GAG.  Bad part is my oldest dd loves her.  She wanted MIL to take her to school this morning, not me.  She is 5 years old.

If I put up boundaries, or say that anything bothers me, I am the villain being mean to an old lady.  MIL acts like such an abused old lady who looves me so much and I amso mean and trying to take her babies away (DH and the kids). Everybody says, she is so NICEEEE.   I feel like I am in way over my head.  We have been through counseling and the counselor said that he needed to put his wife first before mommy.  DH thought that counselor was nuts and that he just wanted him to can his poor little old mommy.  I have asked dh if he wanted a divorce so he can have more time to dote on mommy and so she can feel wanted and needed.  He said no, I would rather have you here than her but he doesn’t understand why I am so mean.  I have developed anger that I never knew I had in me.  MIL I guess developed a sudden interest in psychiatry she says I come from an unloving, uncaring family.  DH grew up happy.  I guess that is why he was a teenage alcoholic, had 3 DUIs, got married the second he turned 18, had legal problems of course his mommy, being the loving mommy she is, would lighten the load for him and help him do community service.  I cannot win. I want out of this insanity.  I just don’t think I have anyone around to help me.

Running...
Isn't it funny how one subject will lead into another? Do you mind if I ask you questions? - like, how long have you been running? how far do you run? How long did it take for you to get motivated to keep it up? I joined a women's run/walk clinic last year and really enjoyed it but it was in the evenings and I had other things going on, work, etc so didn't get to do it but for just a few weeks. I've wanted to start running but just haven't. They've even put sidewalks in our neighborhood now. I don't have any dogs to run with although I might could use that excuse to the hubby to get one. I can't run on a treadmill for some reason - the flooring is too hard on my feet? - i can run on a cement track though and it doesn't seem to bother me. TIA!
He had the running fits and
loved to ride the trains and probably knew loads of people all around the country so I have first hand knowledge of not always a down on your luck kind of deal. He came from a wealthy family (his grandmother gave us stock in General Motors as a wedding gift- years ago when it was worth a lot) and there were physicians, ministers, teachers and the like. He had a degree in refinishing autos, had good homes even with my brother and at 1 time my mother AFTER our divorce - the entire family loved him but that is what he wanted, left the homes and stayed out there until he really aged. My son and his wife got call from shelter asking would they take him in and the ahelter paid his 1 way ticket to their home and he has been there now for the last, oh probably 4 years. It was his own choice, never anyone elses and know from experience you can be homeless by your own doing.
Thanks everyone! Running to the store to buy

re running to get keys
to go outside -- if you have to get keys first -- what are you going to do in case of a fire? If you have keyed dead bolts, you ought to leave them in the inside of door for safety.
Get this one, ad running here in town
It is a person supposedly in medical field and she is saying got a job at XYZ and says "see what X college have done for me." I want to call the place, tried to find a number- is that the way you want to be represented? Terrible English.
Thanks - they are running a special
It's for 11 pieces including brushes, video, etc. I'm starting a new job in a couple weeks and if I don't get it by then I'll check out WalMart.  Thanks for the tip.
That ad has been running for almost a year in

our newspaper, also with the "must order within 48 hours." When I saw that, it rang a bell for another heater I did buy and was I ever sorry.

I would have checked out the company claims a little more before jumping on something like that.

Another point: You will not get the amount of heat you do with wood. Can you possibly convert your wood heater to coal and wood or even pellets?

We used wood for 20 years (Fisher stove) and I, too, was tired of getting up in the middle of the night 2-3 times. I begged for central heat in our new place and boy, was I sorry. I was always cold (for 10 years). So, last year we bought a used coal/wood burner. What a difference! I'll never go back to central heat again. That stove heats our 1500 sq. foot home and I'm never running around with sweaters on anymore. I don't have to get up in the night to fix it, either.

My son bought a pellet stove last year for his 3 story home. They love it and don't use their central heat either.  It does cost a few bucks more for the pellets.I think he bought $1000 worth, while we only spent $500 on coal and the wood is free.

Just remember when others are running you
down it is something wrong on their part that they would do this. Strange but sounds sorta like you married your father with the lecturing. Good men are out there. Took me forever to have a true love.

Running over a dog and leaving the scene?
Going on her merry way, shopping or whatever...?

Probably doesn't have animals; I agree.
I think I am running a doggie day care here sm
LOL I have 2 dogs of my own a golden and a cocker. My son and his girlfriend magically get this chihuahua (sp?).  Anyway, he is apparently abandoned by his owner who moved to California and said she would be "back in a couple of months" to take him back. When he first came into the area, his owner had a "party" and the puppy who is all of 7 months old got into some pot and ate it-had to be rushed to the vet for nasty temperament changes, and wow talk about mean.  He bit anything and everyone including me at least 3 times. Well, we have all been working very hard with this little tiger to bring that demon temperament under control and he's coming along quite nicely, gets along with all of us, loves to play with my dogs and run in the yard. So what's the problem?  I think I have spoiled him with love and discipline. He has to come over every day now. It's so cute. All my son has to say is "want to go see the dogs?" and he's jumping all over the place. I sure hope the owner doesn't come to claim him back because he is so well behaved now. All he needed was a little discipline and letting him know he can't run the show. He doesn't even bare his teeth at me anymore. He's such a doll.  All the dogs lay in front of the full-view door and take their naps in the sun.
I could see kids running through the house with sm

pieces of chicken I guess - and little greasy hands touching everything.  At least with spaghetti they might sit at a table - my opinion only -

running out of minutes with a week to go sm
in your monthly plan. I have 1,000 minutes for $55, just got rid of land line 2 months ago and am very close to going over at a charge of 40 cents a minute. Geez. Guess I need to upgrade my plan.
What kind of people are the ladies above running into
I have never had anyone question why I was married or not, why I had 1 child or 2, why I this or that. Where do you live to have questions put to you like this? I live in the deep south and I am an older person and I just do not get questioned like this. My business is mine UNLESS I volunteer it.
I call ahead and ask if he's running late.
They'll usually tell you. Then I get some other errands done. They have said that if he gets caught up in the meantime you will have to wait.

Funny, but I find the earlier I arrive for my appointment, the earlier I get in. They must take arrived patients in if the scheduled appointment is late.
do you have any loose neighbor kids running around?
lol.... never know...  my neighbors little boy last year took his crayola scissors to my hosta's.....geeze
Regret not running off with my present husband who used to be my
friend. Yes, my friend and my late husbands friend. We started dating after the other died and if I had known what he was like then, would have left the husband and the kids behind. Never have known such happiness in my life. I wasted years and would like to have those over again- life goes too fast to waste time.
all for the sake of media, once again, running lives
I never started watching this useless gimmic of a show; typical media crap that it is.
I have sat here with tears running down my face, astonished
I had already heard the buzz about Simon talking about this person but had not seen. What an absolute joy to hear this. I thank you so much for sending. I will definitely forward to my daughter first and from there it travels on. A true jewel, she is.

Okay good news first, the running will stop at some point.

My youngest (3-1/2 now) did the same thing, and my 5-year-old never did either.  I was mortified with his behavior and the worst part was my dh thought I was overreacting.  Then he took the kids to the store alone one day.  He came home and said "Wow Tommy is naughty in the store", well duh!!!! that is why I look like I have been through a battle when I get home from the store everytime.  At about 2 1/2 he started listening and got psyced about holding on to the cart with mommy, or even better riding in one of the "car carts" that they have at the supermarket.  But anywhere that he needed to sit still for I just ended up finding a babysitter until he was more calm (around 32 months).

My 5-year-old starts school this year too and she is having the same issue.  She is not a shy girl by any means, but she is soooo worried about K.  I think it is normal and I am hoping that she will be okay once she gets there and is involved in the activities.

Sorry I guess this was not really much help, except to know you are not alone.

I meant to type that for scars which we got a lot of from running around and falling down..the
lemon juice really works very well for fading scars.  I will admit that there are some things on the market today that are really good; but from a personal (and financial) standpoint, what I learned from my grandmother does work very well for me. All you ladies have a good weekend...

Running wild all summer in the surrounding citrus orchards - sm
- Also the small town (which it isn't anymore) 4th of July parade, and how excited my dad would get about the fireworks.
- First trip to Yosemite & Lake Tahoe in 1960. Back then the park was practically empty in late August.
- Neighbors who showed Disney movies for all the kids in the neighborhood for free on summer Sat. nights.
- Halloween when I was 10, and trick-or-treating with no parents along. Kids sure can't do that now.
- The nearby thoroughbred horse farm, where we used to sneak into the *old guys'* pasture, climb aboard, and ride them around. It's a wonder we weren't killed...
- *Sledding* down hills on dried-out grass on big pieces of cardboard.
- Tire races! (Put small kid in large tire at top of hill, roll tire down hill. Resulting dizziness of said small kid was VERY funny. Tire & kid that go the farthest before falling over is the winner.)
- Building our own wagons, go-karts, tree-forts, stick-horses, bird-houses, etc. without adults to tell us the *right* way to do it. Much more fun our way.
- Playing in construction sites. We once found a HUGE beam that was eventually going to be a main ceiling beam, and with about 15 kids' help, were able to drag it to a spot where we could turn it into a GIANT see-saw. You could put about 8 kids on either side, and it went REALLY high.
- Going to my friend's house on Sunday nights to watch Bonanza - in COLOR! (Everyone else in the neighborhood had blk. & wht.)
I've been running around all day - heard a bit on the radio, but 9 DEAD? Oh goodness. Lord,
help those families right now, God. And that entire city. I used to live there. Can't recall that mall, though. I used to go to 2. If anyone is in that area, I used to live in Bellevue (the Air Force Base there). Where was this mall in Omaha? thanks for any info.

More suggestions
My daughter had a better suggestion. She said rent the movie Honey and there is another couple where the ballet dancers learn hip hop ( Sorry I can't remember the names) but my daughter said if she really wants to make the team she needs to be modern and hip hop is all the rage.

Good luck email if I can help at all.
Any suggestions for ....sm
an ingrown toenail? I think my 15-year-old son has one.  I remember my grandmother saying to cut a V in the center of the top of the nail so that it would more or less have room to grow back out, but he keeps his nails so short, I can't do that at this point.  I also remember having one when I was pregnant and going to the doctor and he didn't do anything for it.
Thanks again for all the suggestions
Again, thanks so much for all the suggestions, now at least have some idea of what to do.
need suggestions

In the past 6 months, my sister-in-law's dog has killed TWO of our cats.

She never married, doesn't have kids.  Her dogs ARE her children and she brings them everywhere.  They are not small dogs either.  One is a chow and the other is a mutt.

She brings her dogs up to the in-laws every morning so my MIL can "babysit" while she goes to work.  Her dogs run around, come into our yard, stalk our cats, and attack.   Our dogs, if they are outside, will protect the cats but they aren't always outside.

She has been told that her dog has killed two of our cats and her only response is,  OMG!  I'm so sorry.   That's it.  Nothing else.

I love her to death but she is totally irresponsible when it comes to her dogs and even more lacking in compassion when told that her dogs killed two of her nieces cats.  What the?

How would you handle this?   I don't want to cause any kind of friction because we all live so close and it is my husband's only sister.

Just really tired of losing our kitties.

Thank you for the suggestions

If this rash ever recurs (God forbid) we will have to do some allergy testing. At the moment, I think there is a strong possibility that it is related to the trees we bought (see post below). Both of them were dripping from the holes in the bottom of the pot and I think there must have been some kind of fertilizer or something which got on his skin. Or possibly there was some kind of insect on the trees which got on him, because he has had new bumps appearing up to about three or four days ago. But he has several large areas on his chest which are just solid rash (he didn't even let me see that until last night because he knew I would freak out).

Tide detergent is a thought, too - he had been complaining of itching around his waist so he started washing all his underwear and T-shirts (undershirts) in Woolite. I use Tide Free but maybe I should change to something gentler.

Thanks again!    We will definitely try your home allergy test if this doesn't clear up or if it recurs.

Suggestions for ham
I have a spiral sliced ham to bake and in the past, they always ended up kind of dry.  Can someone tell me how to bake it and keep it moist, someone suggested pouring ginger ale on it while baking but looking for more suggestions.  Thanks in advance.

I will try the vinegar and water and maybe a bit of baking soda and keep my fingers crossed. I have tried Febreez in the beginning but urine too strong and it didnt help at all even after enzyme cleaner. Thank you for all the suggestions. I do appreciate it sooooo much.

I am pretty sure that they were both definitely females. Males are darker in color and also have or will eventually have orange cheeks and after 3 years mine never did. There was no trauma to the bird. I had fed them (from the same bag of food for a week)just about 30 to 45 minutes earlier. They were doing fine. The other is still thriving today and is still eating the food. I have washed the cage already and cleaned everything. Poor Roxy, she has really put up with a lot in the last 18 hours. My hubby and son are going out to Harrisonburg this weekend and is going to check on another bird for me. I do like the idea of a mirror and can pick one up tonight. Again, thanks for the suggestions. Roxy and I both appreciate them.
I appreciate all your suggestions
Found out today my children's half-brother's b-day party is also on Saturday and so she will be going to that instead. She called her friend and told her she was sorry she won't be there because of her brother's b-day party. We are making plans to take her out for dinner (her choice) next Friday.

I do realize what some of you were saying regarding the different ways to get head lice and in all reality she could bring it to our home too. My daughter has very thick hair and had head lice a couple of years ago and it was a total nightmare!! I just attempt to prevent that happening again. I do feel for this girl. I really do. She is so sweet and has been such a good friend to my daughter and my daughter thinks a lot of her.

If she is invited to her house again, I do think I will take the opportunity to go visit with her mother. Maybe there is something I can do to help her. In all reality though, how do you hint around to someone about their poor hygiene and dirty house without being offensive? I'll be praying about this.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I very much appreciate it.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions

I used to use Crest - I don't know why I switched.

And I tried Tom's years and years ago. I liked it but my husband didn't. We each have our own toothpaste now, so I might give it a try again.

Honestly, this is a man thing how they go off into dream land. You either have to deal with it or move on who does it less. I think most woman can agree men go off to dream land unless it is something they are interested in.
