then she might have to work with me and give me another apartment. I will have to check into it. I am in Pennsylvania and I will check it out. It would be a lot less expensive to move to another apartment than to do a whole big move. thanks very much!!

I have asthma, too

so i feel your pain.  You can try to get a ground floor apartment the next time, so maybe the smoke won't penetrate to your living as much.  I think you hit it on the head, though, when you said this is not a normal smoker issue.  4 packs a day is tremendous.  Even if you end up with a 1 pack a day smoker below you or next to you, I don't think you'd see as much affect.  Also, most of the smokers I know smoke outside these days even in their own homes.

The other thing you could look into is see if there are smoke free apartment buildings.  We have smoke free everything else, that's always a possibility.

As to the structural aspect of your theory, it's possible, but I don't think in a 40 year old building it is possible to block off every way the smoke is getting in.  Smoke is kind of like water - it'll find a way some how some where.

Good luck.  I can't imagine living with that old smoke odor like that for so long.  Hope you find a place that you like.

Asthma info

So I haven't done any research on this but plan to.  Something I have just been thinking about recently and thought this might be a good place to start.  Who knows, maybe someone here has looked into this topic before and can give me some good info. or starting place.  :)

I have had asthma since early childhood.  My mother was recently diagnosed with it for the first time in her late 50s.  I am wondering if there is a genetic/hereditary link (or possibility of) and it is something that I should keep in mind with my children.  I had always thought it was more due to environmental with me but now I wonder if there could be more to it with my mom being diagnosed.  I also have pretty severe allergies and my niece was diagnosed with the same, both of us at the age of 3.

This is a hot topic and I need some opinoins. I have asthma and the lady downstairs..sm

in the apartment below me must smoke 4 packs a day. She never leaves the house and she just closets herself inside smoking all day long until about 2 a.m. and then sleeps late. I can SMELL the minute she wakes up. I KNOW this is second hand smoke and I have been hospitalized three times in the last two years with bronchitis.  I really cant afford to move.  I have complained to the apartment manager about it and she basically said there is nothing she can do.  I have canvassed the apartment and have blocked up every hole I can that this might be seeping through. Now that the colder weather is here, the windows are closed and it is even worse.  I need bigger balls to deal with this and the DH is no help at all because "it doesn't bother him"  but I feel that because my asthma is so bad and I am living with this in my home that he should step up with me on this issue.  I have lived above this lady for 3 years and I am through. This lady knows my problem, I have THREE hepa filters running in my house and have given her a $500.00 ionic breeze quadra professional unit for her living room. Any good words?

Hi; Oh DEFINITELY familial/genetic components to allergies/asthma....sm
Allergies run very strongly on my mom's side of the family; there are four of us, my brother had severe hay fever/sinus problems all his life, my sisters have the same, my sister Bev has had asthma which she outgrew, lucky thing, and I started out with just generic allergies that turned into allergic diathesis, which makes me allergic to SO MANY foods, animals, plants, trees, environment substances, chemicals, meds, molds, dust mites, etc., severe asthma, and now my docs want me to consider sinus surgery for polyps and a deviated septum.  Also, allergies stem from the immune system, and I also have Sjogren's, RA, and SLE, all of which are autoimmune.  If you go on some of the national information sites for allergy and asthma, they have some very indepth articles on the familial/genetic link to allergies.  But please do not despair regarding children, etc.  Sometimes one sibling will be mildly allergic, but another will miss it entirely, it is not a dominant disorder.  I have three kids, and they are hardly affected at all, just a bit of pollen sensitivity in the Spring.  Hope you are doing well!
Yay Fall!!!
I'm cooking up a pot of chicken and dumplins tonight and a homemade peach cobbler...I heart fall!
How do you fall in love (I think thats it?)

Feels like fall
There's a nip in the air today and a cool breeze with a hint of the smell of apples.  I have a tart warmer burning that smells like pumpkin pie all through the house, yum.  I love this time of  year in the Northeast.  Can't wait for the leaves to start changing color.
Come to NC mountains in the fall.
What a great place to be in the fall if you enjoy being outside, hiking. There are resorts where you can play golf, if that's your thing. Or come to the coast in September or October. The water is still warm and often there are still warm days, but not hot (well, except this year, when it's stayed hot until now).
Don't cushion her fall sm
You did not cut "her" off per se, you stopped enabling her to take advantage of you. You are not a bank, a restaurant or a hotel. She will never learn and will get into deeper trouble later on. You should still love her but not the behavior. I have had to do this with siblings and at first was sick over it, but have stopped enabling. I'm a little lonelier but not being "used" anymore. They will keep asking until the well runs dry and the first time you say "no," you're the witch, so most of us have walked your walk. It does hurt but, "I love you, but 'no' is my answer." Take care of yourself.
Did my fall yard work!
I took out three evergreen bushes that for some reason developed fungus. I replaced two with the round Little Giant arbivortae bushes - so cute. I couldn't do three because the third would have died from too much shade. I did put a Japanese iris in that spot. I put in a cute ornamental pepper plant. It has tiny peppers on it that are purple, red, orange, and yellow, so it's pretty funny. I surrounded it with purple pansies and orange pansies. I had to remove some sod to make room for these in my central bed. (Stupid Bermuda grass). I tidied up some other bushes, but was afraid to prune the azalea because I think it might be the wrong time. Besides, it is guarded by a huge yellow and black spider. I allow her to live because she never moves since DH explained to her that she can't live by the light at the front door. She is HUGE.

I'm very tired now and I think I have a sore throat, but hopefully the yard will look good when the kids and parents come trick or treating.

Anybody else do some good yard work? I suppose leaves are already falling up North.

The Apple Does Not Fall Far From the Tree
I agree with you, Unhappy Camper -
There is little accountability in today's youth as a whole. The kids that are responsible, that know the consequences and live accordingly are the minority. Teens in the military are taught accountability and responsibility if they don't already have those attributes courtesy of their parents.

Interesting article I read in my hometown paper about an underage drinking party where over 25 kids were arrested for illegal possession of alcohol. One of the cops interviewed said out of the 25 parents that had to come and pick up their children, only one, ONE, told their child they got exactly what they deserved and that consequences would result. The others were mortified that their kids were being held, humiliated, and treated like criminals, then berated the cops for having nothing better to do, etc. We wonder why there are problems? The kids want the privileges of being an adult, but not the responsibility, thanks to mom and dad. One cop summed it up precisely. He said when he was a teen, he and his friends did not fear getting caught by the police, they were more afraid of getting caught by their parents.

As a result of such parenting, or lack thereof, it would bother me to see the drinking age lowered. If they don't hold their kids accountable, how can we by allowing the age to be lowered?
Iowa feels like fall too!
I just am not really thrilled for the thing that follows fall. I hate hate hate hate hate hate winter.

We were in the 40s temperature wise this morning. I have my portable heater toasting my toes when I work!
I fall out of bed, grab some coffee and
head to my office in my PJs at 6 a.m.  On my break, I change into sweats or street clothes, depending on whether or not I have to leave the house.
That is such a beautiful fall picture!
You can almost smell the leaves and the fall air!  That is one happy doggie!
or - "The fall alone will probably kill ya!"
Is this Boliva??
if you go to Pismo...go in the spring or fall...
Summer is very very foggy most of the time (I went to college in San Luis Obispo about 15 miles away). Also, if you do go, you MUST go to Del's pizza in Shell Beach for dinner one night. Fairly inexpensive and very good food--not just pizza. In my opinion, it is the best restaraunt in the area.
Tell me my foot isnt gonna fall off!!
I had what I think is a blood vessel to burst in my foot on the side. My hubs says not a big deal, and maybe it is not but it seems to have spread a little, not over the top of the foot but bigger on the side of the foot. Had anyone had a similar happening? I am one of the older MTers so might just be an aging thing? Thanks.
Do those stay on or do they fall off when the kitty scratches?
Also, where do you get those?
HA! Same spider that made me fall down in public (sm)
One of my most embarassing moments!! I was in a busy public area with a park in the middle.  I decided to cut through the park and walked right through a web of one of those and the spider was on my face!!!  I fell onto the ground, freaking out, flailing like a madwoman.  When I finally got up and realized what I had just done, I couldn't wait to get the heck out of there, but I kept shaking my clothes and brushing my hair, just in case!!
POLL:What show are you looking forward to this fall?

I just Netflixed the first season of Friday Night Lights and I am HOOKED! What a wonderful show.  I can't wait for that to start.

Also, looking forward to Gray's Anatomy, but hoping for a much lighter season this fall.  Last year was such a drag after the first two.

yep - Spring ahead, Fall back.....

First significant snow fall here today
We've had enough to make it slick on the roads, lots of ice and cold but this is the first time it is really snowing and actually accumulating and because it is going to be cold for a couple of days it may stay on the ground.  It is pretty, but I hate winter.   On the up side, I don't have to go out in it!!
I put mine in the crock pot and they just fall off the bone
Although that wouldn't be an option for you now since it takes all day.
We're having a big fall/Halloween party on Sunday. sm

I need some great ideas to ask guests to bring - Husband and I are providing the main meal but I'm asking some friends and relatives to bring "side" items.  The main dish will be chili dogs. I asked friend to bring a few bags of chips.  Anything else interesting a few people can bring to accompany? Not everyone is bringing something. We do this every year, have hay rides, and it lasts all day. We play games and give out prizes. It's a blast.  A lot of people from our church will be coming.  I'm really not the only one hosting it, but the other hosts need to know what to bring...I can't think of anything interesting besides drinks and chips!

I'm making my famous marshmallow witches again this year and another gal is bringing baby cany apples by scooping out a portion of an apple with a melon thingie and dipping those in caramel. I've never heard of them before but she said they were so cute!  What do you creative women think??I need to let my other hostesses know today some time.  thanks!!

I love fall - beef stew & cherry pie nm

I am so tired of hearing how people fall for scams
You do not have to be old to be taken in so let's shelf that right now. I just saw on a judge show where a lady gave a guy 1500.00 out of her acct, leaving her with $81. This person thought she would get repaid and then make some. I read about people answering ads saying send in XXX and make $5,000.00 a day, week, whatever fits in here. I see where people stopped outside a store, a person has found a bundle of money and they want you to go to the bank and get the same amount, then all that to be put in the bundle and you get half of that? Can we say flim-flam? I cannot believe all the gulliable, seems like you have never been outside your home, absolutely idiotic people in my life. Why am I getting so angry listening to all this. I really am just BURNT up.
Are you also perimenopausal or in premenopause? Making my hair fall out like crazy as my

Great board and a super idea! How about fall decoration ideas?

Gottah share. Last fall we got 2 rabbits. Was told both were females. Guess what? sm

That's not true! We had a swim party over here and the kids went to check on the rabbits and there were 10 in there! OMG.  I didn't believe them at first, but then they started describing the scene and I knew they weren't kidding. The rabbits stay up at our barn where we housed our goats.

Anyways, I guess the people we bought them from can't tell the difference between male and female!  I pray these babies survive. They are so tiny! The mom is huge. It's an addition to our family......We are excited...Will keep you updated..

I am sure this is not always the case, but
I have had the cashier call me over if there was no one in her line even though I told her I had more than 10 items. She said she hates not having anything to do...Of course, as soon as I am finished loading my stuff here comes someone with 2 things in their hand! :-)
I don't believe this is the case.

Come with your opinions of spooning out meds.  Yoga is a great way to channel stress, but sometimes an SSRI for the long term is better.  As most of us know, if you don't have time to exercise, you will probably not do Yoga either.

I have come the conclusion that older people are not as understanding of what SSRIs are used to treat.  You are not weak because you have anxiety and/or depression.  Most of the older generation think this is just being lazy.

I'm living proof it is not being lazy, it is an actual condition.  Don't make my mistake and wait until you crash and burn.  I'm still recovering from a severe anxiety attack that occurred almost a year ago.  My mind still raises at night.  My severe anxiety attack was due to a few different stressful situations all occurring at one time.  My brain/body could not tolerate all of that stress.  This field does not allow much in the way of vacations, but knowing what I know now, I take the vacations and DO NOT TAKE THE WORK WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO.

Believe me, it will be there when you return.  I am still struggling with time off, but I have decided to take two days out of the week where I do not feel the need to WORK!

Try this OP in addition to seeing your doctor.  Take some time off every week!  You will be amazed how much better you feel.

I want to believe that would be the case (sm)
I really want to believe that would be the case. If I can just get him to cooperate - I would love to be able to be friends with him and raise our children the best we possibly can.
In that case
when you send out invites to anything, I think you should stipulate no gifts. No gifts, no thank you cards. I think not sending a thank you note is just bad manners, no upbringing. I give money to charities and expect no response but an invite and getting gifts, only nice way to handle this.
If that is the case, I think what I have is really
better. If it runs off batteries, can it whisper sweet nothings in your ear, does it give you strokes, talk dirty to you at the appropriate times, etc? If this is no, think I will just stay with my best half.
Unfortunately that is not the case here.
With a family this size there have been a few losses. No one extremely young, but still losses. Like I said they lost her husband about 20 years ago and while there was definite grieving it was not like this at all and his death was very unexpected.
no not the case...
When it is just her and her mom she always calls. She says mom is driving me up the wall today or something to that nature. She loves her mom to death but sometimes they clash. She always talks when her mom is home. I am not JEALOUS. I am concerned because this is not her and I don't understand it. I am looking for opinions on postpartum depression, which if she does have it nothing I can do anyway. All I can do is send her a card and let her know I am there. But I have never seen anyone behave this way after giving birth. I guess there is a first for everything.
In my case, it does.
x
in my case
Da#m husband. HA HA HA
Even if that's the case and they do in sm
fact get paid minimum wage (keep in mind, some make less and are expected to supplement with tips), $7.75 is still not an adequate amount added to the cheap $2 tip to make it worth the gas, insurance and wear and tear on one's car.  I stick to my OPINION that $2 is insulting.
In my case,
I'm the one who strayed. It's all my fault, because I married a man who I felt safe with instead of working through childhood traumas before trying to get married. So now I've been married forever and this near-perfect match came along, except for an impossible age difference. It honestly felt like I could not stop myself, though I never thought this would happen to me. The physical part lasted 6 weeks, and the infatuation lasted 6 months before that. I think this one person was unique, but without a good sex life at home, I'm certainly vulnerable to temptation in future. I did not and would not have ended it because I was ecstatically happy.

My husband is a good man, but I think I should divorce him to be fair, but financially it would be a disaster for both of us. Plus he doesn't want to split. All my friends' marriages are at the breaking point also.
Oh, in that case
I don't think I would call. I'd just leave it alone.

That just stinks if he doesn't hear anything though. They should atleast call him back and let him know. I hate when people say "I'll get back to you on Monday" and then don't. If that is the case, he might be better off not working for this guy. Or, you could think of it another way...maybe they are conflictd between 2 applicants and still trying to decide. They should atleast call him back though. That's what the secretary is for! lol
But in this case ...
My dog didn't want anything to do with the technician. If he came in the room, my dog growled and kept backing away from him. I will admit it was kinda neat looking to see the hair standing up on his back.
more on above - as I said in my case - sm
I do trust him BUT I would still wonder....in my case my DH did cheat on his first wife 2-3 x (I'm his 2nd wife--he did not cheat with with me, I did not even know him then, met him 3 years after his divorce) despite his paranoia of STDs, pregnancy, etc, though he was adament about using condoms so that kind of took care of his paranoia I guess. A few months ago my DH all of a sudden wanted me to buy condoms (we don't use a standard BC). I thought it rather odd since we have not used condoms since before the kids were born. I have just kept my eye on them and made sure the numbers have not changed as he has only used 2 of them since I bought them. He travels from time to time so has many the opp to cheat if he really wanted to (he's been out of town now for a month, home on the weekends). So while I trust him I am not blindly accepting that he will not cheat. He knows though if he ever did (and I caught him) I would divorce him over it and make sure I got full custody of the kids to boot, so I think that helps, that and I know he does love me still after 14 years together. So just keep the eyes and ears peeled and look for anything out of the norm. Good luck.
Jan. (in case you are the same jan)

Isn't Gy a unit of measure?

In this case, my DH had been her only - sm
sexual partner ever, and she his at that point. They were high school sweethearts, etc., married when he was 20, she was 19.
Just in case you want to know
I was at the animal shelter 1 day and a man brought in a dog, said it belonged to his son but his son left and the guy could not afford to feed the dog. He was asked if he had ever fed the dog since left there and the answer was yes. The people then informed the man he was legally responsible for the animal and he could be and would be held legally responsible for the dog. As far as their dog being in heat, your dog apparently has not been neutered or else even in heat they could not have mated, right? You have responsibility as a dog owner, also.
Maybe your way is the better way. But every case is different.
I could never ask my children for money. I suppose this is wrong, too.
I just cannot take their money for which they work so hard.
Last not least, I am the mother and them becoming 18 does not change much in the relation.
