I've used OTC whiteners and had Zoom.
I have never had white teeth. The enamel on my teeth is actually kind of see-through. I've been told by several dentists that I have "clear" enamel, and it does give my teeth something of a yellowish tinge. Add to that, years of coffee, iced tea, and lots and lots of tomato-based food, and my teeth became VERY yellow. My bottom eye teeth were nearly orange. I tried Crest white strips and several other OTC whiteners and had only minimal results. My dentist, who is a family member, suggested that I try the Zoom ultraviolet procedure, and it was amazing! In the office, my teeth lightened up remarkably. I had custom trays made for my teeth, and I do maintenance bleaching twice a week for about 40 minutes each. I have no problem with sensitivity, and my teeth are still nice looking. I don't have bright white "chiclet" teeth, but I never did.

Zoom is very pricey. Nearly $500 in my case. It was worth it to me. I'm 46, and I'll be honest. I don't want my teeth to look elderly! I don't think, however, that I would spend that kind of money on a teenager. I'd definitely start with something OTC and see how that goes.

I had ZOOM in my dentist's office and am very pleased.
I tried Crest White Strips but they didn't do anything. Zoom was pricey, but my teeth were really yellow. They are much, MUCH nicer. I maintain with a 45-minute bleach at home twice a week. Right after I had my teeth whitened, I received a lot of compliments, but people couldn't quite figure out what was different. I heard a lot of "Did you get your hair cut?" and "Did you get new glasses?" LOL.
