Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.

I now am only working part-time but

Depends on how part time the part time jobs are.
You can do it. You just have to work out a schedule you can live with.
Working for a national, do you ever feel you can't ask for
an increase in pay because you're concerned you'll price yourself right out of a job?
I make 9 cents a line IC. I get my line count pumped up to where I want by hard work on the accounts I'm working. I get pretty efficient in that account and then I get pushed to different work where I have to start all over again and work really hard to make a decent line count. It's seemed to happen again, so I'm thinking about requesting a pay increase but then I start thinking that I'm already at a "better than most" pay from what I've seen posted here and elsewhere. What do you think? I'm interested in opinions if anyone will share. Thanks.
If you are an employee working for a national, sm
it seems most of them require you to work say 8 hours regardless of how many lines you transcribe. Example: if the minimum LPH (lines per hour) that they require is 150, this would be 1200 lines per day. However, if you get those 1200 lines done in 6 hours, you are still expected to keep working for the remaining 2 hours of your shift. This is if you are, in fact, an employee. Just like you would have to complete your 8-hour shift if you worked for any other business. Some companies are more flexible and let you get your 8 hours in over a 10 to 12 hour window. You should get this clarified with your recruiter or supervisor ahead of time. If you need more flexibility, then you should probably get an IC position. Hope this helps. 
Currently working for a major national, they use BOS because they want
all MTs transcribing the same. What the client wants comes first, then BOS on the majority of accounts. This is SUPPOSED to make QA-ing a report easier.
New to all of this and just started working for MDI-FI a month ago. I know I should have asked but..
Does anyone know if MDI-FL pays for holidays or how that works. Do you have to be there 90 days before anything kicks in, if it does at all?? Thanks
full-time in office/ part-time at home
I currently work full-time in a physician's office and have started part-time online. My hope is to eventually go full-time online; however that will be done the road for a single mom with a son in college. My suggestion would be try to type part-time for a MTSO and see how that goes i.e work and money with a decision down the road for ultimately being home all the time. A guaranteed paycheck is always a necessity for me. Hope this helps.

IC versus National Full Time
I have been an IC for the last 10 years. I have enjoyed a somewhat flexible schedule. Because I do radiology and acute care, there is a time during the day that I do have to be at my desk working, usually 2-3 hours a day. I thinking of going to work for a national because of the down side to being an IC. I don't always have work, I do work weekends and holidays at the same rate of pay and no vacation time. I have the worries of going on vacation next week with the loss of a paycheck when I get back. Do the nationals really require you to work 8 hours even if you have your line count?
Not anymore. For some time now, I've been working 32 hours and am considered full time to receive

This is the 3rd time I've tried to post a response. Thank you for your honest and helpful words. I keep making stupid mistakes on apps and reports, like I'm on self-destruct on these apps. I actually am prepared to make basically very little for a while. But it's true, one company says they give you ONE WEEK to get up to speed, 1200 lines a day, and I cannot see that. As it is, this job is miserable, horrible, every weekend all weekend, the manager is an old woman on a power trip. I sit in the car and literally cry every day. And now I think maybe I'm not the most wonderful Transcriptionist since Eve, in spite of 8 years acute care, most specialties. So, transcription wise, things are not looking too good. Maybe I needed this app thing to stop deluding myself.

I have been getting some of late that have background noices, door slamming, people talking, Sometimes the doc will stop talking but the noices sound so close to him that it is annoying. Do you think the sound card would interfere with my company's computer? It sounds nice to have even though it does not help the background stuff. I guess that is a good question for tech. I spent about a month in India and they do speak English but sometimes I had a hard time
understanding the way they pronounced the words so I would ask them to spell it.

Don't want a part time job
I was hired as a fulltime employee; I have benefits and want to keep them. What kind of benefits do you have for parttime; not what I have now that is for sure.
We want to work. Yes it seems like we are complaining a lot but you just do not understand what is going on and obviously do not work for MQ and until you do or are in our shoes kindly do not respond to us. We are letting each other know what is going on on this board because management does not care no matter how much complaining we do.
Many of us have quit already and more and more are going out the door.
All we want to do is work and be treated like human beings and not machines.

I know from my experience that the smaller companies do not follow the same AAMT style as nationals, rather notes are typed the way the doctor wants it. You should have some examples. Talk to someone there before you leave. I bet in the end it will be a lot less stress!!

I purchased a laptop mainly for when we go RVing in the summer as sometimes I receive a lot of work (on tape) from my own local account and instead of needing to stay home so I can complete it by Monday I can now go camping and work and do my work. However, at home, I mainly use my laptop for my on-line job. My laptop has more RAM than my regular PC and everything seems faster on, so I prefer using my laptop.
I am waiting for the new ExpressCard to hit the market from Verizon (or Sprint) and hope to sign up for their unlimited Internet pkg. which will be faster than the dial-up that I currently have (which is all that is available to me), then I can actually do my on-line job (live on a platform) when away from home on my laptop as well if need be. I did check with the tech dept. of the software program and was told that I could connect to their platform this way. My laptop did not come with a PC card slot, just the new ExpressCard slot that all laptops will be made with in the future (is my understanding).
Do you have any particular questions about using a laptop for work???

Bascially trying to read docs handwriting and ordering labs, scans, etc through the computer, answering phones, helping nurses (placing a calls to doctors, ordering different tests, etc) It sounds like an easy job, but there is a lot to learn and trying to read doctors handwriting is a pain. After ordering all of these tests, and all of the medications have to be documented on the nurse's bedside for that patient. A lot of work for little pay!

This is basically a vent--I've decided I need to look for another job. Two months ago I took an inhouse job (4 hours per day) at a orthopedic surgeons' group with the understanding that after a period of time this could be a full-time position. But nothing has been said lately about that. The office is moving the week after Christmas to a newer building. I've been told the cubicle I'll be in is still just a one-person setup. They have another lady who comes in for 4 hours in the morning and has been doing this for about 7-8 years.
She is on vacation for 2 weeks and I'm coming in for my 4 afternoon hours. I don't think I can keep the transcription caught up, even though the patient load has decreased some. (This is a 10-doctor practice.) I've wondered if I should ask to come in full days while the other person is on vacation. Should I just wait and see how far behind I get before asking?
I don't want to burn any bridges even though I'm looking for a full-time job. On the other hand, frankly, I believe they are being cheap because the other Transcriptionist is paid by-line and, of course, she isn't paid while on vacation! Your thoughts would be appreciated--I'm losing sleep worrying about getting so far behind.

I really love where I work but not enough work to make enough money. I don't quite have a year exp and most places want at least 2 years so it isn't easy to get a second job. Oh well maybe they can give me another account so I will have more work. Actually I was supposed to have been trained about a month ago for another account and I keep getting put off by the head MT who does the training. I hate to go to the owner and seem like a whiner but I am getting annoyed.

Dream on girl. Wouldn't we all love what you are looking for? With your experience, you could easily get a job with a company working fulltime and have the benefits also (you have that?) From what I have seen, evenings, nights and weekends is what they are looking for and many do not hire parttime anymore. Hook, line and sinker is the name of the game these days.

I don't know why it seems employers are demanding full-time only, but have you asked any of them what their minimum line count for full-time would be? Perhaps if you explained that you could meet that in 32 hours instead of 40, they might be willing to listen?
Most places that do take part-timers tend to insist that you commit to at least 20 hours. How many hours per week are you looking for?
Have you thought about going directly to doctor's offices and such and offering your services as an independent contractor?

I work a full time and a part time, but not sure about 2 full-time...
My hubbie is disabled and I am the only one in my family working also, so I fully understand. You will not have a day off at all working 2 full-time as that is going to be the only way you will get in all your hours. I work one job in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other from 5 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and do have off one day a week, but if I had to get in the extra 15 hours to make the other job full-time I am not sure how I would do that other than lose my only day off. Also, make sure you have your account specifics in front of you at all times because you will get yourself confused as to who is what and having notes will help in that area. Good luck to you, as it is possible, but forget about your house being clean, having any social life, etc. Feel free to email me personally if you just need someone to talk to, as I have been where you are and still am.
