Don't waste your money on these online companies that say they do background checks. They aren't going to find anything that you can't find yourself. Call the courthouse where he lives or has lived. If it's a metro area, you may need his date of birth also. Ask if they have any criminal or civil cases on him. It's public info. Copy costs depend on the courthouse, some have fax service if you pay with a credit card. If you can go to the courthouse yourself, it's better, because then you can go through the files and pick which pages you want copies of or just write down the info and save your money! Check the county website also. There are all kinds of records that are making their way online these days!!
