Hire an architect to do the redesign.  Not only will they know the building codes, but they'll probably also have some great ideas for you!


We bought a house with an incomplete 1600 sq ft addition and ended up replacing four windows because the clown that started it didn't bother to find out what the building codes were.  The wiring was halfway done, but had to all be pulled and replaced because it wasn't done properly either.
