Using the enter key to get to the next page instead of entering a page break, adding a line of spaces to start the next paragraph instead of hitting enter twice, etc. 

Essentially, using spaces and paragraph marks for formatting rather than page breaks, hanging indents, etc. gives the appearance of line padding.
