    "Newbie" or Not,

You should NEVER accept 4 cpl!!  Wages are going down because new MTs (and offshore MTs) are working for embarrassingly low wages!  I've only been working for a little over a year, but I started out at 8 cpl right out of school.  Part-time or not, you're worth more than that.

You wouldn't take a job at McDonald's for $1/hour would you?

Good luck!  I really hope you either find a new company or tell the sorry excuse of a company you have now that you won't work for less than at least 7.5 cpl.

This has nothing to do with being a "newbie." It has to do with not bothering...

to look a word up when you're not sure.  You just said that you still have to look things up - good for you, at least you're looking things up.  I'm talking about MTs who don't bother to look anything up, just blank, blank, blank, blank because they know that the QA safety net is there to catch them.

I know, I know, with line rates as low at they are, MTs don't want to spend a lot of time on blanks - time is money, yada yada.  I hate to break this to all you MTs out there that think that way, but quality AND quantity is the name of this game.  Like it or not, you are expected to be both productive and accurate.  This is the profession you chose.  I know you just wanted to work from home, but just because you can look like a slob while you work doesn't mean you can produce sloppy work.  You still have to be a professional.

I agree with whomever it was below that said we are paid to QA NOT to train.  If you're new and unsure, then for a fee I will mentor you, but if you've landed a job as an MT with the same company I work for, then my job is to fill in your blanks or randomly evaluate your work.  I have to trust that you know what you're doing, why else would you have been offered the job?  Although I would swear sometimes that some of the MTs I QA had someone else take the test for them!

I get paid hourly for doing QA, so I'm not complaining about my job.  Actually, MT incompetence is job security for me, but every day I have more of an understanding as to why the line rates being offered are so low.

No, you don't get "Newbie" reports..
They come to QA. Another MT is not expected to straighten out another MT's work.
Then DON'T work for "newbie" wages
If you were better, you'd be making more. Bottom line.

Slow people do not make money.

Bad attitude people get less work/jobs.

Good MTSOs do not hire poor MTs.

Why are you griping. It's your own doing. Life is what you make of it. If you deserved more, you'd be making more.

    Type faster, make more.

Start your own business, make more.

Qualify for a good MTSO, make more.

If you're not earning it, the reason lies with YOU.
She will tire of this soon. It's just "newbie syndrome". nm
    :)
I know this will sound like a dumb "newbie" question, but

I have a question for those of you that work for national companies and have a set schedule. How important is it that you stick with your schedule? If you can get all the work done before the deadline, is it okay to take an hour or two off for something like cooking dinner or something like that, as long as your get all your work done by the deadline? Just wonderfing!! Thanks!!!

I am such a "newbie" when it comes to computers and you guys rock!
Duh to me, I did find the disc to install XP. Thanks and thanks again. I also printed off the instructions about Radio Shack and that is my next stop. You guys are fabulous!
MRC, wow. I loved that place. I started in 1992 and like you was a "newbie" at that time. SM
I had only worked at one large hospital before doing mostly radiology. I loved MRC until it merged with TL then became MQ. Things only went downhill after that.
In my first post stated I had facelift years
before this one, they only last for about 10 years or so and so this was supposed to be a repeat. I had scars, just not complete from this person. He made the incisions around the ears and told me forgot about total lift because took out Gore-Tex around nasolabial folds I had inserted prior to get those darn lines out. This was not him that put those in, by the way. I did have previous scars though.
I saw a special about theft in the post office years ago. SM
This isn't saying they all do it, but luggage handlers and post office employees have a high rate of left.  I bought a really cool Video Now XP for my granddaughter. The tracking information says it reached my local post office and they scanned it in there.  They say they never saw it even though they scanned it in.  Someone there has a really nice present for someone this year and they didn't pay for it either.  Disgusting.
Answer to finding job x15 years experience and not so funny post!

How childish!  Just another embarrassing post by an American MT !!!

Should just post all their open positions in one post and only be allowed to post one of those a day

Pack years = packs smoked per day x years of smoking - sm
    25 pack-years = 25 years of 1 pack a day, or 12-1/2 years of 2 packs a day.

I don't think pack-years applies to someone who smokes only cigars. But I don't know for sure.
I worked for Cbay for 3 years. I was also part of their lay off back many years ago. sm
Even though I got stuck in a lay off era, I still love the company. They paid well then. The people were nice (exception of 1 person) and if I had the opportunity I would go back again. Fortunately (or unfortunately - depending on how u look at it), I have a great paying job right now, so I am not looking for a change. I do know that at one time, they asked management to accept late paychecks, but never sure of the reason why. My check was never late.

I don't mind doing legal and will do it now from time to time, but be prepared to be totally bored out of your mind.

At least that's the way I feel.  I love to transcribe, learned legal in college, went on to get my paralegal degree, etc., etc., but I did temp work when the kids were younger, which was about 90% medical and I would never go back to legal except for once in a while.

    Booooooring.

Only 3 years away from reaching total years for retirement
but if I had to do this and raise a family, would feel exactly like you do. The pay is terrible compared to what I used to make. I work 32 hours a week, hope to be able to continue even after full retirement age. I have worked on VR now and unless places get to where they really do not care about how their reports look, think they will need MTs. I very seldom do a report and it is 100%, just cannot remember 1 like that and most take a lot more editing. Working now because want to, not have to anymore, thank goodness!!

I dumped my ex 20 years ago, but got lucky 13 years ago

It would take me all night and pages and pages to describe what a bad person my ex-husband was.  After six years of putting up with his OCD, verbal abuse and alcohol, I left him the house, took the kids (5 and 1) and didn't look back. That was 20 years ago.

I wasn't looking to get married again, but I did.  After 13 years I only complain when hubby doesn't see things my way. :)

My older kids, who were 5 and 1 when I left, are married and have kids of their own now.  My husband gets the Father's Day cards.  Their "real" father sits alone in the perfect little house I left behind and let him have and he drinks himself into oblivion every night because nobody is "perfect" enough, including his kids and his grandkids that he never sees.

Sad, but true.  So glad I smartened up and got  out of there when I did.

We have been supporting other countries for years and years now.
What is the big deal.  Look at your clothes, cars, items in your house.  You will see mostly China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan etc., etc.  We have not supported our own people like we should have for years now!!!!
Only 2 in 13 years for me. First Edix for 8 and now Webmedx for nearly 5 years. nm

When I trained, back years and years ago
We did not have spell checking nor the internet (Google for instantaneous help). OMG, how did we do it? We used Correcting Selectrics with the lift-off tape to correct errors- you only had dictionaries, both English and medical, to look up things so yes we did have to learn to spell all those big longgggggggggg words.

Grammar Question: 9 years' ago or 9 years ago? *sm*
I have a terrible time trying to remember this rule! HELP!
Worked inhouse for years and years
Inhouse transcription from 1973 to approximately 1992 and we had no downtime for answering the phones and when the physicians came into the room (or others) needing some assistance, just part of the job. I did not feel bad about doing it then and I dont see why you would either. You don’t realize that probably you are making right now more than if you are outsourced, right? You have hourly salary plus incentive. Guess how many of us have that now? Probably inevitable about outsourcing so I would say just enjoy while you can. The pay our here now sinks further and further. I make, for instance, 4 cents a line for voice recognition and 8 for straight. Now, more complaining?
Yes, I tried to post same last night about 10 times, and it won't let me post.
I used to breed lab puppies (please no activist flames)! I had a champion female white Canadian lab, and people would be on a list for years if by chance I bred her, which I did twice, and so that I could continue her line.  Anyhow, she's my sweet Skye who passed away 2 months ago? At any rate, we had the same problems with kids in the "hood" who wanted to come over and play once the puppies were old enough to be exercised daily and played with.  At first I thought, how cute, right? Puppies and little kids - what better picture! Well, the majority of kids were adorable, but there were always 1 or 2 sick ones who would smack the pups, smash and hold their heads in the dirt (a real common thing, but I don't know why - psychiatrist anyone).  At any rate, I finally had to ban the whole group due to the 1 or 2 creeps, had to call the police, the whole 9 yards, and that's EXACTLY what the police officer told me - next thing is there will be poison meat or a donut in the yard. He told me to always go out and patrol my yard, especially alone the fence line every day before I let the dogs out, particularly at night. I went out with a flashlight.  It was about a month later, but sure enough - poison meat.  Because there were so many kids involved, we obviously couldn't pin point the exact family, but the police went and read the riot act to them all. It would stop and not happen again for a year or so, but every now and again we would find something. My dogs were NEVER out and barking, so it was nothing like that - it was just over the puppies and the cruel kids.... Not trying to freak you, but that's the way these kids and their families are.  You can really judge someone's character by ill treatment of a PUPPY, of all things. And the parents??  They sound whacked.  Please be careful.

Yes, she had post partum depression AND post partum psychosis. I posted on this a while back, and

    IMHO

People have been saying that for years and years - SM

however, I am working fewer hours and making more money. I think maybe the answer here is working as an IC for a one-owner company. MTSO was an MT for many years and she knows the secret to making lots of $ is putting your MTs doing what they do best and leaving them alone.

I don't think it is the "national" part of services that hurts. I think the low wages can be gauged by the number of suits in the company. More suits = less $.

And why pay QA? Just hire people experienced/good enough to do the work correctly the first time.

I have been doing Radiology only the last two years after several years (sm)
of acute care. I love it and find it easier although not as interesting as acute care. I was told by those who hired me that a good medical Transcriptionist will be able to do Radiology even with no experience in it. There are some specialized terms but easy to learn. I would never go back to acute care unless there were very good dictators and good sound quality.
